"The French Connection"

#160---COWDREY / CAWDREY / COWDEROY / COWRY continued at #130

Around 1572 in France, the Family were being persecuted for their religion
They were of the Protestant faith known as "Huguenots"

They escaped by boat down the River Seine in the middle of the night, setting course for England
Their first port of call could have been the Isle of Wight

Eventually, around 1753, they finally settled in Birmingham Warwickshire England and before then they were in the Hampshire Area
There is a chart showing the various areas where the Coudrey families lived between 1587 and 1788, which Walter Knowles compiled in 1996

The Coudrey name as spelt today, but back in the "Old Days" it was spelt Cowdrey / Cawdrey / Cowderoy / Cowry
All these spellings were recorded in England from 1587 to 1788

Click here to read a brief history of the "Huguenots"
which explains why the Coudrey Family moved from France to England

The name of
COUDREY
Origin of the Surname ... Information #02

Other Information
We can safely assume that some Coudrays went to England under the banner of Robert de Beaumont in 1066
We can also safely say that some of them were still there in 1207, as was reported by the Duchess of Cleveland after a meticulous search and by Bardsley in various spelling variations after 1297
The Battle Abbey Roll, a scroll of names initially constructed in 1338, was reconstructed by Sir Anthony Browne about 1539, probably when the original roll was found during a reconstruction of the Battle Abbey Gatehouse
Its scroll was initially thought to be a list of men who accompanied William the Conqueror as leaders in the Battle of Hastings in 1066
By others, it is thought to designate what families in England came over with the Conqueror
The Duchess of Cleveland used Holinshed's version of the Roll as a basis of her list, published as "Battle Abbey Roll with Account of Some Norman Lineages" by John Murray in 1889
She found in her research the names of Coudray, Cowdray, and Couderie in 1207
She found in the Duchesne listing of scroll itself the name Couderay
According to Howard Corddry, the family is well documented as of French origin under the name of 'Coudray', living in the Loire Valley in the 11th century or earlier
This family name is still represented by place names and by chateaux, at least seven of them scattered over an area of some thirty five miles radius centered about ten miles south of Saumur
There is some uncertainty about the exact age and initial ownership of an ancient tower called the
Tour du Coudray which is part of the Fort du Coudray at the Castle of Chinon, an outstanding feature in the area
There is a
Chateau le Coudray (below) near Seuilly, four miles southwest of Chinon also in the Saumur region

"In the Beginning"

#150---PENBERTHI continued at #139

Part One

On the west coast of Cornwall, in the West Penwith area, not more than a few miles from Porthcurno, there lies in a valley, a picturesque hamlet called Penberth, comprising of a small number of cottages and a natural harbour which protects it from the rough seas of the Land's End peninsula

There is no documentary evidence to link the family and the hamlet, but I think there is more than a reasonable chance that such a connection would have existed

Part Two

There was also a Reverend Penberthi in charge of the Church of St Erth from 1455 to 1460
Could he also have been a relation ?

Margaret - christened 26th December 1754

Note from Wally Knowles ... Wednesday 27th February 2013
In reference to Perran Rowe who was born during 1741 which is seven years before his parents' recorded marriage date
I have checked and double-checked the birth of Perran Rowe and keep getting the same answer
One thing that should be remembered is that before 1754, there were many clandestine marriages which were recognised by the law but did not take place in a church or before a minister
The couple only had to consent to the union
No special words were necessary ... no need of a clergyman or witnesses ... no records were kept of these marriages
I'm not saying this happened in William's case ... it's just a comment
By 1748 they could have married again in a more respected way and in a church where records were kept

Joseph William Coudrey and Emily Louisa Hill

Joseph was born in 1843 in Walsall Staffordshire England and Emily was born in 1845
A note from Sharon - I would say that this is where the 'Hill' in my Dad's name 'Ronald Hill' originates from - his Grandmother's maiden name !!

In January 1872 the family were living at 11 Albert Street Walsall Staffordshire England

He had been owner of a pig-iron foundry in Staffordshire but, with a slump in the industry migrated to Adelaide bringing his wife, family and in-laws with him
They migrated to Adelaide South Australia in 1879 aboard the ship "Cuzco"

The group included Kate Hill, sister of Coudrey's wife Emily Louisa, nee Hill
Orphaned early Kate lived with the Coudreys
Alice Tibbits, her friend, also emigrated, the pair becoming authorities in the training of nurses and hospital management

At the time of Charles' marriage in June 1902, Joseph was employed as a clerk and they were living in Broken Hill New South Wales Australia----NOTE - this is probably incorrect ... refer to the details of Joseph and his Family's lives on THIS page

Joseph died 31st December 1908 aged 65 years
Emily died 6th May 1916 aged 71 years

They raised four children
Jessie Florence - born in 1866 - died 27th October 1930

What I haven't mentioned to you before was that I studied Pharmacy at the Adelaide University in 1947 and 1948
I got credits in the first year but dropped out at the end of the second year ... decided I wasn't interested in pharmacy as a career
Uncle Joe was very pleased when I first started and gave me some good text books
Probably very upset when I dropped out though he didn't say so
Next time I saw him after this was when he was dying in 1952 and my wife and I were baby-sitting him so Auntie Gertie could get away and play the organ at the local church on Sunday nights
