Some of the early information and photographs below have come from a publication arranged by the "Raneberg Family History Committee" which was organised in the late 1980's and early 1990's - this book details the Ranebergs from their arrival in Australia on 7th October 1862

The page starts with the earliest known ancestors, and finishes with "The Newest Generation", our children Tanya and Brett

Because of space, only the "direct line" is given here though brief mention is given to various brothers/sisters, etc - for this reason, a lot of information in the above publication is not included here - should you wish to borrow this book please contact me using the link at the top of this page

Also below are the details of "when and why" the spelling of the surname was changed

There are many more details and photos in the "Geoff's Dad and Mum Albumn" and after looking at the information below, CLICK HERE to go to that page

This web site is included in the "Official South Australian Family Tree Directory" and CLICK HERE and then scroll down to the letter 'R'

"The Ronneburg Castle"

As well as being the name of the Castle, Ronneburg is also a municipality in the district of Main-Kinzig in Hessen Germany
so it's unlikely but wouldn't it be nice to discover it was in some way associated with the Raneberg Family !!

#28---SCLANDERS ... NOTES

The Raneberg / Roneberg and Sclanders Families
A note from Geoff ... Sunday 10th February 2013
As you begin to scroll down this page, you might start thinking that it should be called 'The Sclanders Family History' with this name being very prominant in the Section Headings ... but the two families do eventually merge in Section #06 when Sidney Cecil Hackett marries Johann Friedrich August Raneberg ... Sidney was the daughter of James Hackett and Robina Sclanders and she became my Dad's mother... I am at the moment concentrating on the Raneberg / Roneberg records, but it is difficult as a lot of these are in German and the even older Prussian language ... have just got to be persistent !!

Surname of Sclanders
Information from Wally Knowles ... Thursday 17th January 2013
This is a Dutch - Flemish 'Huguenot' name of topographical origins which translates as 'The dweller (or possibly wosher) at the Fen land'
We have quoted the original name holder as 'Huguenot', however both Charles 1 and the Commonwealth Government (1649 - 1660) employed Dutch engineers to drain the English fens, so it is possible that this is the reason for the name appearance at the same time as the Huguenots (1630 - 1750)
The name recordings are extremeley rare, although on the continent a Coat of Arms was granted to the Sclanders of Sclandersberg of the Tyrol Germany circa 1580, with whom the present name holders may be associated
The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of David Sclanders, which was dated 24th October 1687, when he married Grace Maryou at St Marylebone, London, during the reign of King James 11, known as the 'Last Catholic King' (1685 - 1689)
Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation
In England this was known as Poll Tax
Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to 'develop', often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling

Sclanders Family Insignia
Information from Stephen Ratcliff Jones
...............................Thursday 7th February 2013
I have attached the Sclanders Family Insignia
My great-grandparents Alexander Sclanders (1875 to 1923) and Mary Rowatt (1873 to 1970) had a tea set made for themselves with this on it
It's an interesting crest and some of the motifs suggest quite a story here
The family came from somewhere in Europe, perhaps Germany, but before records were kept so I have not been able to trace them
I do have one clue that would link them to France
There is a chapel there that has a similar vine leaf motif around the top of the walls, but I haven't found it yet !!
PS - the Alexander Sclanders mentioned above is a descendant of Alexander Andrew Sclanders (1810 to 1896) from Section #13 below

Thomas Spence Sclanders was born/christened on 21st June 1817 in Glasgow Lanarkshire Scotland and Mary Jones was born on 13th January 1831

Although unconfirmed, it is thought that Mary's father was Enoch Jones who was born around 1896 in Wales

It is stated that Thomas had arrived in the ship "English" during 1840 although this information is yet to be confirmed

Thomas and Mary married on 6th October 1851 at St Stephen Church in Willunga South Australia

Early settlers in Yankalilla South Australia
In 1852, local government was formed at Yankalilla
In 1854, the Councillors listed were William Randall, Septimane Herbert, G F Day, Thomas Sclanders and Charles Thomas Hewitt who became Chairman

Mary died at fourty six years of age on 5th February 1881 in Blinman South Australia and is buried in that Cemetery
Thomas died at the age of ninety one on 20th April 1908 at the residence of his son-in-law James Hacket in Port Germein South Australia

Sidney Sturt - born 19th February 1867 at Hindmarsh Adelaide South Australia - died 11th November 1955 in South Australia

Information from Wally Knowles ... Wednesday 16th January 2013
Thomas Spence Sclanders was born on the 21st June1817 in Galsgow, Scotland
Mary Jones was definitely born in 1831
One source says 13th January 1831 and another 12th May 1831
Looking at their marriage details ...
HERE ... in 1851, she said she was twenty and he says he was thirty three
His parents aren't recorded anywhere (NOTE - these have since been found and refer to Section #13, #16, #18 and #19 above)
In respect to Mary's parents, I can find thousands of Mary Jones born in 1831
The one I like best is the daughter of Thomas Jones and Mary Menzies
This Mary was born in South Leith Scotland
Follow-up Note
Hold off on the date of Mary Jones' birthday
I think Ancestry.com and I may have been taken in my Mary stating on her wedding certificate that she was twenty
I think she was only 16 !!
This would make her born in 1835 and not 1831
I would also agree with the death notice in the paper ...
HERE ... which states she was fourty six and not fifty as Ancestry.com stated
I have checked just about everywhere I can but will still continue ... watch this space
Follow-up Note
I have been down to the Library and checked out every Jones who migrated to Australia between 1836 and 1851
And there were thousands ... but no Mary Jones !!
Perhaps she didn't come from England
I have checked Australia as well and there is a Mary Jones born 1835 in Sydney ... perhaps ??

'RANEBERG' and 'RONEBERG'

Shortly after the divorce mentioned above, the spelling of the family name was changed to "Roneberg"
The first marriage and divorce are registered under the surname "Raneberg", but upon enlistment in the AIF and since the war,
he and his descendants have used the new spelling
It was common during both World Wars for volunteers to the forces to change their names and/or ages in order to enlist,
or because they have a foreign name which could have lead to discrimination
