More than 200mm of rain falls across parts of FNQ as school term starts
Parts of the Far North have recorded more than 115mm of rain in five hours Monday
as Bureau of Meteorology issues an initial minor flood warning and warns of more heavy rainfall
More heavy rain is forecast for the Far North in coming days,
with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing an intial flood warning on Monday
A nearby trough dumped up to 260mm of rain over the region in the 24 hours from 9am Sunday to 9am Monday
and conditions haven’t let up
While the big totals were initially recorded to Cairns’ south on Sunday,
the rainfall has shifted north with Whyanbeel Creek, north of Mossman, collecting 116mm in 5.3 hours on Monday
Closer to Cairns and in the same period, Saddle Mountain recorded 85mm, while Cairns Airport had 61mm
In its flood warning for the Mulgrave and Russell rivers,
the Bureau warned minor flooding may develop at Peets Bridge and Gordonvale from midafternoon Monday
“Widespread rainfall totals of 150-240mm
have been recorded since 9am Sunday in the Mulgrave and Russell River catchments” the BOM said
“Further heavy rainfall is likely during the next few days”
Bureau forecaster Rosa Hoff said the Far North could expect rainfall equivalent
to what we had yesterday and today, if not potentially heavier
“At this stage we are expecting (Tuesday) to have the last really significant chance of heavy rainfall” she said
“We could potentially see heavier rainfall extending through to Thursday,
with potential for further falls beyond that, whether they’re heavy or not”
The BOM’s current forecast is predicting anywhere from 80 to 120mm
over Cairns and 90 to 150mm over Innisfail on Tuesday
A tropical low has also been driving heavy rainfall in the Cape and Torres Strait,
Bureau forecaster Kimba Wong said
Horn Island recorded 143mm in the 24 hours to 9am today
“The chance of developing into a cyclone is not looking likely at less than five per cent,
but it may enhance wet weather across the region as it tracks toward the Gulf of Carpentaria” she said
“From there, what happens will depend on how deep the structure of the low gets
If it remains shallow it may waffle around the Gulf,
but if it becomes deeper it could interact with another trough”
Ms Wong said the Bureau was looking at putting out a flood watch
for Far North river catchments on Monday afternoon
“Given the rainfall we’ve had and what may still be to come,
we’re looking at the potential for a flood watch” she said
“The saving grace is there hasn’t been too much rainfall in the weeks leading up to now,
so the catchments aren’t particularly saturated
If it’s issued, it will most likely be for the Tully, Murray and Daintree River catchments”
Cairns Racecourse had nearly 190mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am today,
while Cairns Airport recorded 159mm in the same period
The heaviest falls have been south of Cairns,
where Babinda boosted its 2021 Golden Gumboot prospects with 259mm at the Boulders
Saltwater Creek at Innisfail had 239mm and the Innisfail Airport 223mm
The wet weather has contributed to traffic chaos across the region,
with the Bruce Highway shut earlier due to a crash and vegetation and flooding impacting roads
Earlier -- It could be a wet return from school holidays for Far North students on Monday
with parts of the region in line for late wet season downpours of up to 100mm this week
A trough sitting off the coast is set to make its move, with Tuesday expected to see the biggest falls,
according to Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster, Shane Kennedy
He said areas around Innisfail, Cardwell and Port Douglas would probably be the wettest,
although Cairns could potentially receive up to 25mm on Monday, increasing to 50mm on Tuesday
“It’s all being caused by a trough in the Coral Sea and that is moving closer to the coast” he said
“We might see a bit making its way onto the Tablelands as well”
Storms are also forecast to impact the region on Tuesday
Conditions are expected to begin easing on Wednesday and further improving later in the week
Mr Kennedy said daytime temperatures would likely hit about 29C, while remaining around average overnight

Just back from "My First Walk Of The Week"
As the video shows, there is just one car there at the moment
He is one of the Painters and is doing 'Preparation Work'
He said that "there will be a few other fellows there tomorrow"
Reckons they will be finished in "a week or so"
They are Spraying and not Brushing which surprised me !!

Still doing Filling and Sanding and Prepartion Work
One of the guys told me that they hope to be Spraying on Friday

He said he is only doing the strip which will be the base for the Storage Sheds

And all the doors from the units have been taken down and are now standing on the front patios
Units One to Three are done and Unit Four will be later today
The guy reckons that's how they do it for the number of coats, etc
All this stuff happening that I don't really understand !!
The masking has started inside with the bathroom floors all covered up
Kitchens will be later
Things are rocking !! ... and The Painting Is Tomorrow" !!

The guys are starting to "Render The Block Side Fence"
As you can see, at the moment they are Grinding off all the 'garbage'
The boss reckons it will take two / three days to finish the job
