Cairns pitcher Ryota Kusumoto has been offered the chance to join Australian’s big leagues
The 18-year-old will join the roster of the three-time ABL champions the Brisbane Bandits as a development player for the team’s four-game home series the against Auckland Tuatara on January 3-5

It caps off a stunning 2018 for Kusumoto, who played a leading role in his club’s 2018 Cairns Baseball League championship series victory last month and also took home the CBL’s coveted Most Valuable Player award

Kusumoto will be the first Far North baseball player to play in the ABL for more than 20 years and has big ambitions to make it to the USA’s major leagues
“That would be the ultimate goal” said Kusumoto
“But for now it’s just about having smaller goals at a time and hopefully I will make it there eventually
“Next year, I want to try and go over and play division one college baseball in America”

He said the thought of the region’s young crop of baseball players looking up to him was “a weird feeling”
“It’s daunting and a bit nerve-racking — I’m not used to being looked up to, I”m always the one looking up to others” he said
“I guess one of my jobs now will be to teach the young kids here about baseball and what I know”

Kusomoto’s Cairns Bandits teammate and former Olympian Brett Roneberg was the last Far North Queensland baseballer to get the ABL call-up more than 20 years ago, after signing with the Brisbane Bandits in 1996 as a 16 year old

“He is one of the main reasons I’ve wanted to try and get better in baseball,” Kusumoto said
“I’ve always looked up to him and I’ve always dreamt of being at that level”

Roneberg said Kusumoto was “the future” of baseball in the region
“It’s very hard to maintain your level of play, but he always does” said the Olympic Silver Medallist
“No matter who he’s playing against he’s always ready to go, ready to step up and ready to win
He executes and trains like no other and it shows — MVP and we won the competition because of him
Now he’s got the same opportunity I was given and I hope he can make the most of it”

Roneberg said biggest thing for Kusumoto as a Brisbane Bandits development player will be the exposure of playing in the national competition
“You don’t get it when you’re playing at the lower levels and in the regional areas” he said
“He might make a play in front of someone and you never know where it could go from there — the sky’s the limit”
