Top-Dressing the Outfield

The National Schoolboys Titles are being held in Cairns, commencing on Monday 23rd May 2011
Both of the fields need to be "absolutley perfect" for this inportant tournament

Over a period of time, a number of wheel tracks and ridges have appeared in this outfield and in places, the surface was very uneven

Today an eight to ten cubic metre (12.26 tons) truckload of sandy clay was delivered
and it was spread thanks to the help from ?? and ?? and Smithfield High School

To be honest, more truckloads are needed but this amount helped rectify some of the 'worst spots' in the outfield

x

The truck arrives ...

... and drops the soil in the worst spots which had been marked with the red and blue cones

The load was divided into five heaps

Peter Thompson and Pioneer North Queensland ... Thank You !!

Time to start spreading ...

... and the infield drag mat did a great job !!

Water is next and this sprinkler is running off the mains

The bore was also connected up ...

... and the opportunity was also taken to give the infield 'a much needed drink'

Spreading the last of the five piles of soil ...

... and here is the look before it is dragged ...

... and finished ... ready for the sprinkler

Fertilizing the Outfield

Though strong and thick in parts of rightfield, the grass in most of the this outfield was very sparse

Leon Nelson, the Grounds Controller, was able to get hold of some fertilizer at a discounted price
and he decided this would be the best place to use it

And it's a first ... I cannot remember it being done since becoming involved with the fields during the mid-1980's !!

.

.

This is what was used ...

.

.

and click HERE for more details

A spreader was borrowed from the Soccer Club next door and hooked up behind one of the rideon mowers

Leon is filling it up ...

... and it's ready to go

My job was to walk behind and put markers to show the 'line' of where the fertilizing had been done

.

.

As you'll see in the shot below, I couldn't keep up with the markers ...

... and had to yell at Leon to slow down !!

.

It took a few hours but the entire outfield was covered and there was even enough left so the infield was done as well

There was a bit of rain around Cairns so the fields got a good watering over the next day or two
