Working Bee

Road base is going be be used as the foundation of the mound and this has been dropped ready for spreading and compacting

The truck is now unloading clay which will be used on the top surface ... and "Thanks to The Cairns City Council" for these items

In the background you can see the home run fence ... this is also being worked on as you'll see in the photos below

David and Ritchie spreading and compacting the road base

Preparing the top layer of clay

Removing the old posts ready for the new fence which will be the same height as the other surrounding fences

NOTE ... green fencing mesh is being hung on the home run fence

Finished for the day ...... but there's more to do before the season gets underway

Monday 28th March 2011

Though not finished, the mounds have been built ... and it's time to set up the catchers' areas

The Distance
Between the front of the pitching rubber where a pitcher must start his delivery
and the back of home plate is 60 feet 6 inches

The two boxes have been marked out

These are going to be dug out and a concrete slab will be poured
and this will then be covered in astro turf to which a home plate will be glued

NOTE - the "old home plate" is showing in these photos

Working Bee

Jamie Snowdon and Roger Dienhoff digging out a space to position the two pitcher's plates / blocks

The plates are in and now they are shaping the slope at the front of the mound

Jamie and Roger are working on the other side while David Stanfield uses the whacker packer

... and the job is now just about finished

The mound is ready for use !!

The heap of dirt in the centre is going to be used to fill in the low spots along the fence
and the rubber mat is there ... well, simply because there was nowhere else to put it !!

Just as a matter of interest, the mound on the right hand side of the photo
was used for the first time during the 2011 PreSeason Games on Sunday 10th April 2011
