Saturday 27th March 2010

As with Diamond One, both the catcher's area and the batter's boxes have been "problem areas" over the years
with the players digging holes in an effort to find that 'perfect surface' to play on

With Diamond One it was decided to use unfired clay bricks in these spots
and CLICK HERE and scroll down to Saturday 13th March 2010 for all the details

For Diamond Two, Ritchie had 'spotted' some heavy black clay stored at the Portsmith Slipways in Cairns
This would dry out to be extremely hard and an ideal base for both the hitters and catchers

Just the one hassle ... someone had to go and get the gooey sticky black mess ... Ritchie "volunteered" !!

These first four shots show Ritchie at the wharfs loading the clay into his truck

SPECIAL--NOTE

The Queensland Schoolboys Baseball Championships were played in Cairns from the 15th until the 18th April 2010
Unfortunately this clay had not 'set' by Wednesday 14th ... it was still extremely soft and very sticky
This was the case in all four areas where it was used ... the two batter's boxes, the catcher's box, and the mound
It was definately not suitable to play on and was dug up and replaced by a mixture of sand and crusher dust
which performed extremely well for the eleven games played on this field during the Championships

Back at the Baseball Complex, work starts on home plate ...

... and the clay was also used where the pitcher's foot lands on the mound

Sharon meanwhile was busy painting the Lineup Boards in each of the dugouts on Diamond Two ...

... and Geoff fixed and rehung the shade cloth in the first base dugout

Working Bee

The bases all needed to be tidied up ... and in the above shots you can see that the mound was a bit overgrown
Circles had been cut to mark out the edges and then the grass had to be chipped away

Cleaning up the mound ...

... and home plate is finished ...

... first base is also done and the "Crew" has moved on to second base ...

... and they are now heading off to tidy up third base

The work is finished ... and the heaps of rubbish will be carted away when the field dries out a bit
