1930's Stromberg Carlson 1212 Rotary Telephone

"The Fat Boy"

ten+ photos and the largest are 1000 pixels wide

A note from Geoff on Monday 7th September 2009
x
For Christmas 2005 I gave Sharon a really nice antique-look telephone and it can be seen by clicking here
It was perfect and suited the "ambience" in her "little-corner-of-the-house" !!

Recently, it had started making a lot of line noise and hissing, becoming almost unusable
Time for a new one !!

This telephone was a reproduction ... for its replacement, I decided to go for The Real Thing

Now check out all the details and photos below

================================================

The 1930’s signalled the growth in manufacture of bakelite telephones with their clean classic lines and the increased use of the handset combination in preference to the separate ear and mouthpieces

As a result of this development throughout the world, one or two classics emerged from most countries

The Stromberg Carlson 1212 is one of the most stylish ever produced in the United States
It was the first deskphone to have all components including a real ringer with real bells and network internally mounted / built into the base

This phone was the company's answer to Western Electric's 202/302 Telephone

The 1212 was not in production long because the bakelite ears on the handset cradle would break off when the phone was dropped

With its classic and graceful Art Deco look, the heyday of these phones was the late 1930's and 1940's

Due to its large size and bulbous appearance it was nicknamed the 'Fat Stromberg' or just 'Fat Boy' among collectors

This phone is 21cm wide and 16cm deep and stands 15cm high ... the handset is 22.5cm long

The Company ... Stromberg Carlson

x

Stromberg Carlson was a telecommunications equipment manufacturing company formed as a partnership between Swedish natives Alfred Stromberg and Androv Carlson in 1894, when Alexander Graham Bell's patent for the telephone expired

Stromberg and Carlson were employees of American Bell Telephone Company, and each invested $500.00 to establish a firm to manufacture equipment for sale the non-Bell telephone companies

By the turn of the century, Stromberg Carlson emerged as a leader among the independent telephone manufacturers
This was due to their reputation for stable prices, integrity and a strong emphasis on quality

Stromberg-Carlson was originally located in Chicago, with Carlson managing manufacture and Stromberg responsible for marketing

In 1904, Stromberg-Carlson was purchased by Home Telephone Company, a relatively large service provider which was based in Rochester New York, and which relocated all of Stromberg Carlson to New York

In the mid-1900's, Stromberg expanded to also manufacture radios and televisions

In 1955, Stromberg-Carlson was purchased by General Dynamics
In 1982, General Dynamics sold the phone system and telephone division of Stromberg Carlson to Comdial / Siemens Corporation
Comdial went bust in 2005 and was bought by Vertical Communications, which also bought phone system maker Vodavi

work ... no-one notices it, but it might irk you!!

Vintage Stromberg Carlson 'Fat Boy' phone - here is a great old Stromberg Carlson phone - this phone works - the dial is a little slow on the return, but some anti static spray will fix that - this is a chance to get a great old phone that is easy to hook up and use every day - from United States - September 2009
Final selling price - AUD$93.50 + AUD$46.00 postage

Number 02
model number X1212WADF - handset is the 'spit cup' version - phone has faults
Here is an old Stromberg Carlson bakelite desk telephone - a beautiful antique and it is nearly mint condition - the only thing keeping the exterior from being mint is that some of the numbers are worn as shown - here is what I know about the inner workings of the phone - the dialer works fine and someone has updated the wiring so you can plug it into a modern phone jack - the cord to the handset is fine and the handset is great and unusual - the body of the phone is great as is the bottom - I was able to make a call on the phone and could hear the person fine and they could hear me - the main concern is the phone does not disconnect when you lay down the handset and there is some static - both are probably easy fixes for someone that knows these old phones, and if I could fix them myself I would never sell this magnificent piece of history - from United States - September 2009
Final selling price - AUD$120.00 + AUD$unknown postage

Number 03
model number 1212WADBZ - handset is same as ours - lots of faults and problems
You are bidding on an early Stromberg Carlson telephone model 1212A 'Fat Boy' with its original schematic wiring diagram - I am not a telephone collector although I have handled several over the years - I purchased this phone at a local estate sale and when I purchased it, I assumed it was an old Western Electric - however, when I got ready to list it for sale, I could not find the typical Western Electric markings so I opened the case and inside under a wiring box I found the original wiring schematic indicating that this was a Stromberg Carlson Model 1212A - I did a little research and found that the 1212A was commonly referred to as the 'Fat Boy' because of its potbelly shape - these were commonly used by independent phone companies and are nowhere near as common as the Western Electric models - I believe the case is black bakelite - there is a black number stamped into the bottom of the metal base and it reads 1212WADBZ - as to condition, first I no longer have a landline so I can't test this unit to see if it works so I am selling it as/is and if you want assurances that the phone you purchase works, please pass on this one as I do not guarantee it works - here are the things I can tell about this phone from my visible inspection - it has apparently been painted at least twice in the past and I can see remnants of yellow paint and a bluish/green paint with some of the blue/green paint still visible on the dial and the yellow paint is visible in the seams, especially in the handset seams - I also see a small chip in the left front cradle arm that I did not notice until I was listing it - there is black paint loss in the dial face and the wiring is getting brittle and will need to be replaced if you want to ever try to restore and use this phone - other than the chip in the cradle arm, I do not see any other cracks in the casing - it could use a good cleaning but I will leave that to the winning bidder - the wiring diagram is yellowed with age but as of this moment in time, it is not torn or separated at the seams - however, I'm sure that if it is opened and closed many more times, it will probably start separating as it has been exposed to the internal heat of the phone for all the years it was used - I don't know anything about the history of this particular phone and when I purchased it, I did not ask the estate sale reps if they had any info - from United States - September 2009
Final selling price - AUD$30.00 + AUD$unknown postage

model number X1212WADE - handset is the 'spit cup' version - this is a teal colour
Just picked up from an estate, this auction is for a rare teal colored vintage 1930's Stromberg Carlson bakelite 'Fat Boy' telephone - I don't know much about telephones so ask questions if needed - I did plug in the telephone and I was able to hear a dial tone but I couldn't get it to ring but I may not have been hooking it up right - it seems to be in overall good condition - after looking at this auction, one of the potential buyers sent this note to the seller ... "the reason it will not ring is that the ringer in that phone is a 'party line ringer' and they will not work properly on today's phone lines" - from United States - October 2009
Final selling price - AUD$56.00 + AUD$52.50 postage

model number 1212ADF - handset is same as ours - does not work and has been hand painted
Vintage 1930's Stromberg Carlson 1212 'Fat Boy' telephone base with receiver that has been painted a pinkish white - the phone measures 8" long and 6" wide and 7" tall - this unit has a porcelain dial that works smoothly and the phone is compete but does not work - marked on the bottom 1212ADF, and that is all the markings on it - this would be good to restore or for parts - plus it might work if you change the cords as they have tape on them inside the phone - the phone has no chips or breaks in the cover or receiver but the paint is missing on the handle of the receiver and there are some scratches on the base - from United States - October 2009
Final selling price - AUD$82.00 + AUD$62.00 postage

Number 09
model number 1212ADBZ - handset is the 'spit cup' version - maybe not working and has faults
A vintage Stromberg Carlson dial telephone - it has a neat oval or 'Fat Boy' design - the handset is plastic, bakelite we think - this telephone is about 6” tall and 7.5” wide across the base and 5" deep - we could not figure out how to hook this one up to see if it works so we are selling it as is - there is a little bit of chipping on the tip of one of the four prongs that hold the handset - otherwise the telephone is in great shape - no other chips, cracks, etc - the dial works fine back and forth - the circular piece that holds the mouth piece on the handset has some old tape residue on it but otherwise the handset looks good - there is some dried up rubber stuck to the metal base that needs to be cleaned off - there was a rubber bumper/gasket piece over the base that dried out and fell apart - the handset cord looks good - there is a touch of rust inside of one the interior bell but other than that, the telephone is clean on the inside - a nice set - markings are Stromberg Carlson 1212 ADBZ - this piece is outstanding and unique and would make a neat display or conversation piece - from United States - October 2009
Final selling price - AUD$62.00 + AUD$91.00 postage

NOTE
why is this one so expensive when compared to the other auctions ??

Up for auction is a vintage Stromberg Carlson Model 1212 telephone - the rotund design of this late 1930's classic earned it the unglamorous nickname of 'Fat Boy' - the phone was completely disassembled and every part was cleaned and/or polished - it features an automatic electric dial that was ultrasonically cleaned, oiled and sent to a professional for calibration - the metro-style (numbers+letters) porcelain "Z operator" dial plate is in excellent shape - the fingerwheel is hand polished brass and has a chrome center ring - the dial center card is new - the bakelite body and cradle were buffed out to a high gloss - the heyday of these phones was the (late) 1930's and 1940's and that is probably when this phone was originally assembled - the bottom plate is in decent shape, albeit, a little bumpy and a new rubber base ring was added - the insides were thoroughly cleaned and a new screen was added over the backside vent slots - the Stromberg Carlson #15 spitcup type handset has a capsule type transmit element and the receiver end has the magnet type element - new but traditional black cloth cords were installed for both the handset and line cord - the line cord has a modular plug so it is ready to plug'n'play on today's phone jacks - the ringer bells were hand polished so that they ring loud and clear - the phone works fine and rings with that old time sound that only a dual toned ringer can do - many, many hours were spent in the restoration of this phone - it is a functioning piece of nostalgia, a great conversation piece and a real beauty - from United States - November 2009
Final selling price - AUD$376.00 + AUD$unknown postage

model number 1212WADH - handset is same as ours

NOTE
in this action the seller states
"the handset will date this as a later phone since the first model had a the old spit cup handset"
and this is directly opposite what I have been told and noted above in the "Information - Handset" section !!

Here's a really nice Stromberg Carlson model 1212 - commonly referred to as the 'Fat Boy' this was the first model the two Swedish founders of Stromberg Carlson made with internal bells - prior models had external bell boxes - these are sometimes hard to come by without a chipped or broken cradle - this beauty is fully intact, and the cradle is in perfect condition - there are no chips, breaks or cracks - in good used condition, and it does have surface scratches - also the earpiece has some 'pitting' issues but this does not interfere with function but is noticeable - from the 1930's and 1940's, this phone was manufactured in the United States - the handset will date this as a later phone since the first model had a the old spit cup handset - there is a rubber cord from handset to the base of phone - this phone was tested and it will dial out and receive calls, but does not ring - the chrome finger dial turns smoooooothly - and note that it is not wired for today's phone jacks - if you'd like me to add the wiring so you may plug the phone in (to US jacks only) please add $5 to the purchase price - it is made entirely of bakelite, and these phones will shatter if dropped. I have two of these phones. Why? Because I was bite bad by the antique phone bug. Please see sellers other auctions for more phone available for purchase - from United States - November 2009
Final selling price - AUD$96.00 + AUD$unknown postage
