Game Reports
Jason Delaney cracked a two-run home run that
highlighted a three-run first inning and Dewon Brazelton tossed
seven shutout innings to lead the Curve to a 3-0 win over the
Bowie Baysox Sunday night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie,
MD
The shutout - only the Curve's third of the season - ends a four-game
losing streak and evens the club's season record at 43-43 with
just one game remaining before the Eastern League All-Star Break
Delaney's longball - his second in as many days - gave Altoona
a 3-0 lead against Bowie starter Oscar Alvarez
Earlier in the frame, Jason Bowers, who led off the game with
a double to left field, scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring
Those three runs were more than enough thanks to the solid starting
outing from Brazelton, who allowed only five hits and struck out
six batters over a season-high seven innings
Brazelton, who was making only his fifth start with the Curve
since being signed as a free agent, improved to 2-1 on the season
Chris Hernandez and Matt Peterson each tossed scoreless innings
to close out the win
Peterson, who pitched the ninth, earned his 18th save of the season
Alvarez (6-3), who last won on May 23rd against New Britain, took
the loss for the Baysox, allowing three runs and six hits over
six innings
In addition to Delaney's home run, the Curve offense was led by
Javier Guzman, who went 3-for-4 in just his second game since
returning from the Disabled List with a left knee injury which
forced him out of the lineup for 2-1/2 months
The Curve and Baysox will play the rubber match of their three-game
series Monday night at 7.05pm
Eastern League All-Star Game selection Luis Munoz (8-4, 3.36)
will get the start for Altoona while Bowie will counter with lefty
Oscar Alvarez (6-2, 4.91)
Dewon Brazeltons best pitching performance
in more than a year and Jason Delaneys bat have given the
Curve a chance to salvage their road trip
Brazelton threw seven dominating innings, while Delaney came through
with a two-run homer as Altoona blanked Bowie, 3-0, at Prince
Georges Stadium on Sunday
Brazelton struck out six, the most he has fanned since June 16
of last season
He threw a one-hit complete game in that outing for Triple-A Portland,
an affiliate of the Padres
The seven scoreless innings were also the most he has thrown since
his one-hitter
Delaney staked the team to a 3-0 first-inning lead with a long
two-run blast to left field
He has now homered twice in two days
The win ended the Curves four-game skid, and the squad can
take the series with another victory on Monday
The road trip started rough, as Trenton won all three games against
Altoona
Jason Bowers scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to get
Altoona on the board, and it was all the support Brazelton needed
The righty held the Baysox to just five hits, three of which came
on infield singles, and no walks
Bowie had only two legitimate scoring threats against Brazelton
The Baysox put a runner on second in the first and seventh innings,
but Brazelton escaped both unscathed
He retired 11 in a row at one point, dipped his ERA to 2.08 and
has allowed only three runs in his past 18 innings
Chris Hernandez came on to pitch a perfect eighth, and Matt Peterson
pitched the ninth for his 18th save
Altoonas three pitchers didnt walk a batter
Bowie starter Oscar Alvarez (6-3) allowed three runs in six innings
The Baysox entered Sunday's game winners of
three straight and a jump from fifth to being tied for third following
Saturday's win
But the Baysox trailed from the start today, as Altoona put up
an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the first inning and shutout the
Baysox by the same score
Oscar Alvarez who got the start for the Baysox today, faired pretty
well in his last outing against the Curve, going six innings and
giving up only three runs on four hits
But today Alvarez had some trouble in the first as he gave up
a lead-off double to Jason Bowers
Two batters later Bowers scored on a wild pitch from Alvarez in
Neil Walkers at bat, giving Altoona an early 1-0 lead
Alvarez would then walk Neil Walker and in the next at bat, bringing
up Jason Delaney
Delaney would connect for his second homer of the season and second
in as many days, taking Alvarez deep to left, putting the Curve
ahead, 3-0
After the rough first inning, in which he gave up two hits and
three runs and one walk, the southpaw settled down and gave up
only four hits and three walks over the span of six innings
Dewon Brazelton baffled the Baysox, giving up only five hits over
seven innings for the Curve, while recording six strikeouts
Chris Hernandez came in to relieve Brazelton in the eighth and
pitched a hitless frame then turned it over to Matt Peterson to
close it out in the ninth inning
Peterson converted his 18th save giving up one hit and recorded
one strikeout in the frame, fanning Val Majewski for the second
out of the inning
Peterson put the stamp on the game getting Oscar Salazar to fly
out to center field, sealing the victory for the Curve, 3-0
The Baysox only collected six hits on the night, with Oscar Salazar
and Paco Figueroa accounting for four of them in the contest
The loss drops the Baysox to 44-45 on the season and tied for
fourth place with Reading 0.5 games behind Altoona for third place
in the Division
LHP Chris Waters (4-7, 4.48) will get the start for the Baysox
in the series rubber match on Monday at 7.05pm
Waters will square off against RHP Luis Munoz (8-4, 3.36) for
the Curve
