"THE..TEAPOT"

As you scroll down this page, you will read notes about whether this item is an ORIGINAL or a REPRODUCTION

Here is an email I received on Thursday 5th September 2013 from Deborah Crisp

She is the Owner / Operator of "Debs Cornucopia" which can be seen by clicking HERE

Hi Geoff
I don’t know whether you’ll remember me, but you bought Sharon’s Marguerite Breakfast Set from me a few years ago
I was just playing around with Google this morning
and saw your saga with the Old Cottage Chintz Teapot and just had to write to you with a few corrections
First and foremost is that your teapot is NOT a reproduction but original (c1930-34) and is indeed a 4-cup teapot
The Ascot shape does come in 2, 4 and 6 cup sizes
The fact that the teapot isn’t crazed can be accredited to the previous owner who obviously kept it in a temperate environment
and not subject to extremes of heat and cold which would have prevented the glaze from cracking
I have sold numerous pieces over the years without crazing
Even at 2013 prices your teapot is holding it’s own with the purchase price
Kind regards ... Debbie

Reply from Geoff
Hi Deb
and I remember ... the Breakfast Set will always be one of Sharon's favourite items
I just had a look at the Teapot web page and there is a LOT of information there !!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through it all ... and for sending your notes as above
Would you mind if I added them to the page ??
Really appreciate your contact ... Geoff

A note from Geoff on Wednesday 25th May 2005
Yes, I have been buying more china for Sharon!!!
Surprise Presents - and she loves getting them!!!
By looking over her shoulder and also checking out her computer desktop,
I noticed that she was interested in the trio below
I checked it out, and noticed that the same Ebay seller was also auctioning
a teapot by the same manufacturer and in the same pattern
Sharon hasn't got many teapots
so I thought it was a great opportunity to get some matching pieces
So I bid on both --- and won them both!!!

Royal Winton Six-cup Teapot

Below is some correspondence

'to-and-from' the seller of these items

#01 - the seller had three different Royal Winton teapots for sale at the same time
and this question, from another potential bidder, refers to all three
Most importantly, it mentions the age and value of the one we bought!!!
Question
- Can you tell me how old this teapot and the other one is please
Regards Katrina
Answer - Hi Katrina and we have three six-cup teapots listed
Firstly this one, the Summertime, is mid-to-late 1930's with a current market value $1100.00
The Old Cottage is the same age with an $800.00 value
The third one, the Cotswold, is early 1940's with a current market value of $1500.00
Thank you

#02 - the following is my initial note to the seller and the answer
Question
- "OLD COTTAGE CHINTZ" - TWO x ITEMS
As a surprise for my darling wife, I am very interested in this teapot
and the matching trio that is also ending later today
If I bid and am successful on both items, am I able to pay via PayPal using my credit card??
It would be "much more convenient" in being able to hide the purchase from Sharon
until after the items are delivered!!!
Regards Geoff
Answer - Hi Geoff and yes, you may pay via PayPal this once
This teapot is currently valued at $650.00 so be prepared to be bidding a bit more
as I have twenty-three people watching this item!!
The trio probably won't hit it's value of $110.00 so you should get that
Regards Jan

#03 - another email from the seller and my reply
Hi Geoff, and congratulations on your winning bids!
Thought you weren't going to get them
Haven't sent our bank account information as you will be paying via PayPal
Lovely part of Queensland you live in - we were there three years ago
Regards Peter and Jan
Reply - Hi, and I am real glad I got them!!
Once I was successful with the trio, I wanted the teapot - no matter what!!
Thanks for allowing me to use PayPal, and I have made the payment this morning
I don't know much about these types of "collectables",
but I often see Sharon looking at items (we have our own computers)
She had saved the trio details to her desktop, and I thought "What the hell, I'll get it for her"!!
Then I was looking through your other items and saw the teapot
Now I've got both!! - and Sharon will be very happy about that!!
She doesn't know much about values and that type of thing
She just knows what she likes - "pretty" and "nice" are the words she likes to use
Just as a matter of interest, could you let me know these things if you can ---
If I went into a retail shop, what could I expect to pay for the trio?? - and the teapot??
Thanks for the sale, and I have got your items bookmarked
in case you get any more of the "Old Cottage Chintz" style!!
And now I'll wait for the parcel --- and watch Sharon's face as she opens it!!
Regards Geoff
PS - and yes, the tropics are a great place to live!!
Reply from the seller - Hi again Geoff
Retail, the teapot would be $600.00 to $700.00
The trio is around $185.00

Hope this helps
Regards and thanks again Jan

Three photos - taken after we received the teapot

A note on the capacity of the Teapot

The auction details state that this is a 6-cup teapot
After receiving this item, we filled it up - with water only!
It held 600ml,
and from what we can find out on the internet, a 6-cup teapot holds 900ml
So maybe it is a 3-1/2 or a 4-1/2 cupper!

NOTE - refer to the "Teapot - Follow up Appraisal Certificate" below
It's a 4-cup teapot!!

The Backstamps

The backstamps and markings are shown in the above photos
These are explained in detail in the following appraisals

History Of The Item: Chintz is a type of English china that was first made in England in 1929

It was introduced to the china market by the Royal Winton pottery, under the direction of Mr. Grimwade

The first pattern was called "Marqurite" and it was an instant success with the public and the Royal family

The best known manufactuers were Royal Winton, Kent, Shelley and Crown Ducal

The lovely floral transfer designs are cheerful, bright and reminescent of spring and summer
The most popular patterns were Summertime, Julia, Sweet Pea and English Rose
Currently popular are Wellbeck, DuBarry and Rosetime

Chintz china is an enduringly popular antique
Because it is so popular, it has been heavily reproduced

Production of genuine Royal Winton Grimwade chintz ceased in the late 1960s
The company was reopened under new owners in 1995 and designs and patterns reissued

Ascot is the name of the shape (or mold) and Old Cottage is the pattern

Unfortunately, several factors indicate your teapot is a reproduction
These factors are discussed in the comments section

Appraiser Tips: The teapot can be kept clean by washing in very mild dish washing liquid and warm water
Do not immerse in hot water or put into a dishwasher; the extreme temperatures and harsh dishwasher detergents can harm the finish and cause major damage

Appraiser Comments: Below are factors indicating the teapot is a reproduction

Crazing
One of the criteria for judging a piece of antique china or Chintz is condition
While there are no chips or cracks in the teapot, there should be crazing
Chintz was made from earthenware and the glaze invariably crazed over time
Crazing looks like fine squiggly lines on the surface of the glaze (sort of like fine wrinkles might look)
There should be crazing, especially on the bottom of the teapot
The pictures do not show any crazing at all on the surface

Soiling
The bottom of the tea pot shows no soiling whatsoever
There should be some light soling, if only caused by moving the teapot across the surface of a shelf over many years

Colours
The colors on the teapot are lively and fairly bright
However, Antique Chintz colors, while lively, are richer and deeper
For example, the blue on the mark is bright but not as deep as it could be
White also tended to acquire an ivory tone
The white on your teapot is far too light to indicate early manufacture

Backstamps and Marks
Royal Winton used several different marks
When the factory was reopened in 1995, one of the original marks was retained with a few minor variations
One of those variations was the incorporation of the reissue year, 1995, into the mark
One of the pictures shows a number incised into the bottom of the teapot - it appears to be 1095 which would indicate a manufacture date of October 1995

Even though Chintz has been reissued, reproductions have good value
The appraisal is for a Royal Winton "Old Cottage" chintz teapot reissue in excellent condition.

Notes on the above Appraisal

......including the Backstamps

Size and/or Capacity
No mention was made about the capacity of the teapot and our note that it held approx 600ml
Is it a six-cup as listed on the Ebay auction or is it a three/four-and-a-half-cup size???

Year of Manufacture
The appraiser mentions:- "One of the pictures shows a number incised into the bottom of the teapot - it appears to be 1095 which would indicate a manufacture date of October 1995"
I have carefully looked at the bottom of the teapot shown in two photos above
The one from the Ebay auction is not very clear, but the one we took after receiving it clearly shows the name ASCOT but I cannot see any numbers as wriiten above

Patent Number
No comment was made on the number 301862 which is written on the teapot lid
Does this number indicate age??? - or pattern??? - or ???

Backstamps
This information detailed below is from the "backstamps" link included in the above appraisal and appears to contradict the thoughts of the appraiser in respect to the age of this teapot - ???

  The New Royal Winton backstamp
Notice the circle around the Royal Winton name
The 1995 indicates the year that Grimwades re-established itself as Grimwades Ltd
Some items made between 1995 and 1998 may NOT have the 1995 Year indicator at the bottom of the mark
But ALL have a circle around Royal Winton and say "LTD", with a period, after the Grimwades name
Current "general issue" patterns are Florence, Julia, Majestic, Marion, Old Cottage, Richmond, Royalty, Stratford, Summertime, and Welbeck
The majority of the re-issues were produced in 1997 and later

Photos of the backstamps on the cup, saucer, plate and teapot are above
------None of them have a circle around the name!!
------None of them have "1995"!!
------None of them have "LTD"!!
BASED ON THESE POINTS, IT CANNOT BE A REPRODUCTION --- CAN IT? --- CONFUSING, EH!!!

  An early Royal Winton backstamp

This is what the stamp on the cup, saucer and plate looks like

The teapot has a similar mark, but has "Made in England" instead of "England" - and refer to the example below

A little later Royal Winton backstamp
The "A" was incorporated after 1943

This is very similar to what the stamp on the teapot looks like
It does not have the "A" so, based upon this description, it would be pre-1943 - ???

Another example of a post-1943 backstamp

Follow-up Appraisal Request

 Appraisal ID: 76185
 Item Title: Royal Winton Teapot
Selected Category: Porcelain, Ceramic and Pottery->Porcelain (China - Individual)->Teapot

Q: Give any other details you feel are pertinent A: Hi
and this item has recently been appraised

Please refer to DELUXE APPRAISAL reference number 75859

Before going on, could I ask you to please refer to the Web Site/URL I have included
This page includes all the details on the teapot, purchase details, photos, plus copies of the Appraisal request and certificate mentioned earlier

We are quite happy with this Appraisal and have already submitted a feedback form, but it raised a few new questions that I would like to get clarified if I could!!!

If you log on to the web site and scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see a section called "Notes on the Valuation"

Included in this are four items, these being
(1) Size and/or Capacity
(2) Year of Manufacture
(3) Patent Number and
(4) Backstamps

Would you mind looking at these, and letting us know what your thoughts are - in particular, the 'backstamp' section seems to indicate that the teapot was made prior to 1943

Please understand that this second appraisal request is in no way a criticism of Camille Buda or her report
We would just like these four points clarified

Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you
Regards, Geoff and Sharon

 Appraised By: Camille Buda

History Of The Item: The site provided in your inquiry has been reviewed and the Notes on Valuation section read

A response to your inquiry regarding the following can be found in the Comments section:
(1) Size and/or Capacity
(2) Year of Manufacture
(3) Patent Number and
(4) Backstamps

 Research Sources: Kovel's
Schroeder's
English registry and patent marks found in "Collectible Ceramics" written by Marcia Ray, 1974

 Appraiser Comments: Capacity
No matter what Chintz decoration was applied to the old Ascot shape, a Royal Winton Grimwade teapot would only hold four cups of liquid

Year of Manufacture and Patent Number
The number on the lid is a registry patent number
The number pictured indicates a manufacture date of 1898
Royal Winton Grimwade's "Old Cottage" wasn't made until the 1930s and reissued in the 1990s

Backstamp and Marks
The back stamp pictures shown at the URL site you provided are different than those submitted with your request for appraisal
The appraisal was based on the picture you originally submitted

The incised mark in that picture, just below the Grimwade's backstamp, is unclear and probably upside down
It certainly looks like the number 1095
But right side up it could be the word ASCOT
Incised marks were not generally found on early Chintz

Wear and Crazing
This still does not explain the lack of wear and absence of crazing on the teapot or the lack of light soiling on the bottom
The site at the URL you provided has additional Chintz pictures
If you look carefully, one of them shows a piece that has slight soiling and minor glaze flakes on an edge
That is the type of wear that should be found on the bottom of your teapot

I hope this information helps

Current Fair Market Value: As per original appraisal above

Replacement Cost: As per original appraisal above
