Game Notes

Thursday 21st August 2003 - Game #129

--
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Bowie Baysox - road game at Prince George’s Stadium
Playing first base - batting at #4
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - runner at second base/two down - ball/called/called/ball/ball, followed by a base hit into rightfield - single and 1 x RBI - and went to second base on the throw home - left stranded at the end of the innings
------2) RHP - runner at first base/two down - called/ball/foul, and then a high fly ball into leftfield - out "F7"
------3) RHP - led off the innings - called, and the next pitch was "driven down the rightfield line and into the corner" - a stand up double!!! - and was left stranded again
------4) LHP - AND THE LEFTY WAS BROUGHT IN AS BRETT CAME TO THE PLATE!!! - runner at first base/one down - and jumped on the first pitch from the lefty for a base hit into leftfield!!! - single - went to third base on an error play by the Batsox first-baseman - but was again left stranded at the end of the innings
Fielding
The bottom of the ninth inning and the score was tied at two - the Baysox had a runner at third base with one down, and the next batter hit a slow roller towards the drawn in first-baseman, Brett - he fielded the ball, and attempted to throw to home but his throw hit the runner coming down the line - the runner scored from third and the Baysox win!!! - from what we heard on the radio, it was the only play Brett could make in a "do-or-die" situation and it was unfortunate the ball hit the runner heading to first base - no error was recorded on the play
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "The Curve claimed a 1-0 advantage in the first with a two-out rally.
A bloop double by Castillo preceded an RBI single by Roneberg.
Both Castillo and Roneberg finished 3-for-4 with a double"
(2) "Brett Roneberg and Jose Castillo both finished with two singles and a double, with Roneberg driving in a run"
(3) "Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the first, courtesy of a Jose Castillo double and an RBI-single by Roneberg against Bowie starter Dave Crouthers.
Castillo and Roneberg each had two hits for the Curve, including doubles"
(4) "Josh Hoffpauir's fielder's choice grounder in the bottom of the ninth inning scored pinch-runner B.J. Littleton with the winning run Thursday as the Bowie Baysox defeated the Altoona Curve, 3-2.
Hoffpauir followed with ground ball to drawn-in first baseman Brett Roneberg.
Roneberg's throw toward the plate hit Hoffpauir in the chest and Littleton scored
"
(5) "The Baysox prevailed behind a two-run homer by Kurt Airoso in the fourth, and a strange play in the bottom of the ninth.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the final frame Airoso led off the bottom half of the inning with a double against Altoona reliever Rick Palma, and advanced to third on an Eli Whiteside sacrifice bunt.
Josh Hoffpauir then hit a slow grounder to Brett Roneberg at first base, who fired towards home in an attempt to cut down the winning run.
However, the throw hit Hoffpauir while he was running to first and bounced away, allowing Airoso to scamper home with the winning run
"
(6) "However, a dramatic and bizarre, 3-2, victory over the Curve on Thursday night kept Bowie’s slim post-season hopes alive"

Email from Brett on the final play of the game!!!
That play last night.
I came up with the ball,
looked at home plate and the hitter was right in front of me,
threw the ball,
and would've hit him right in the chest but he put his hand up.
Hit him in the hand,
and then I caught it!!
Unbelievable!!!!!!
Very pissed off!!

During Thursday's game, Rob Egan (left) made the following comments
(1) after Brett picked up a hit in his first at bat, Rob said "he continues his 'hot hitting ways' and is now 18 for his last 39 for an average of 0.462"
(2) and with that hit, he said that "Roney has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games"
(3) Rob also mentioned that "Roneberg 'feasts' on Baysox pitching, and is currently 20 for 52 against the Bowie pitching staff"
(4) following Brett's double in his third at bat, Rob mentioned that "the ball coming in must be looking like a beach ball the way he is smacking it around"
(5) as the left-handed pitcher was brought in to face Brett in his fourth at bat, Rob said "that Brett is 'red hot' lately, and handles left handers very well with a 0.295 average"

From the Curve web site - "News and Notes" - after Thursday's game
"Roneberg is 20-for-42 (.476) in his last 11 games"

Email from Ed Leipold, "Founder and Captain" of the "Second Deck Psychos" - a group of die-hard Curve fans!!!
Brett's bat is still red hot,
and I'm sure, if you looked close enough, you could actually see the smoke coming off his stick when he comes up to the dish.
And he made one of the better plays at BCB this year, as I'm sure you heard Rob Egan describe.
Aaron McNeil, the R-Phils big firstbaseman, hit a shot down the rightfield line that carried into the bullpen area.
He was so sure it was 2 bases, he ran upright into secondbase.
Well, Brett made a quick pick-up, fired a rope to second, and Mr. McNeil was DOA by a half step.
Outstanding throw by Brett, right on the money!!
......and a reply to Ed
Yep, we heard Brett's 9-to-6 play!!!
Rob gave it a great call!!!
Those types of throws are one of the reasons he likes to play the outfield sometimes!!!
He looks forward to the chance to have a throw like that.
Thanks for the comment about his batting.
I know that he is very glad that everything has come together at this point of the season.
We wish him heaps of success for the rest of the games!!!

Email from Sarah Stewart, a Curve fan who was at the game
You guys should be really proud of Brett and his many talents.
I never believed he could get to ball (by the bull pen)
--- let alone have time or strength to throw the guy out!!
He was unbelivable!!
Everyone around us we in awe!!
Including Dan and I.
I think he's become one of their best players.
Till later.

Heard during the Games on Monday
Game announcers Rob Egan (left) and Jason Dambach (right)
(1) Jason said he had been speaking to Brett before the games about his current 'Hot Streak' and said
"that Brett is jokingly wondering when his "0 for" game is going to come!!!"
(2) As Brett came in for his first at bat in game one, Rob commented that
"that there is no other batter than this guy that you would want to be coming up in this situation"
(Brett had a good at bat, lining out to rightfield)

On base Streak
Before the games on Monday, Brett's streak was at 14 games.
After his double in his first at bat in the second game Rob Egan said that this, combined with his walk in the first game,
extends his streak to 16 games!!!

Eastern League - "Player of the Week"
(18th to 24th August 2003)
As Jason Dambach was announcing the starting lineups for the first game, he mentioned that "Brett was edged out" of winning this Award!!!
He mentioned that his statistics over this period (12 from 26, 0.462 average, 3 home runs, double, 7 RBI's, 7 R, 3 W) were very similar to the winner, Jeff Bailey
