Game Notes
Sunday 22nd June 2003 - Game #73
-
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Harrisburg Senators - home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing leftfield - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - runners at first and third base/two down -
jumped on the first pitch he saw and, according to the commentator,
"ripped it down the line and into the rightfield corner"
- "a clutch two out hit by Brett" - an easy double plus 2 x RBI's!!! - the throw in went to home plate
and Brett went to third base on the throw - but was left stranded
at the end of the innings
------2) RHP - led off the innings - ball/called, followed
by a ground ball on the rightside of the diamond - out "4-to-3"
------3) RHP - led off the innings - called/foul/ball, and
then "a slow tapper up the first base line" - the pitcher
let the ball roll but it stayed fair and in the commentators words,
"Brett picked up a
45 foot single and his second hit of the night" - tried for second base but was 'caught
stealing' (refer to the note below)
------4) LHP - led off the innings - foul/called/ball/called
- strike out!!!
Heard during the Game
As Brett was standing in for his first at bat, the commentator
said "Roneberg is next up and he has been swinging a 'hot
stick' lately" - and this was just before Brett belted
the first pitch he saw!!!
Base-running
After reaching first base in his third at bat, Brett took off
for second during the next Curve's hitters at bat - the throw
from the catcher to second base was a good one, and Brett was
'caught stealing' - in the commentators words, "it was
a very close play at second and the Curve Manager Dale Sveum is
arguing the call saying that if the throw and tag was on the letters,
Roneberg's feet must have been on the base" - was he
safe???
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Kevin Nicholson drove in three runs and Brett Roneberg
finished with two RBI to help the Altoona Curve beat the Harrisburg
Senators, 6-1.
Roneberg doubled home a pair of runs in the opening frame
for Altoona, which has won nine of its last 10"
(2) "The Curve offense enjoyed an early barage against Harrisburg
starter and former major leaguer Blake Stein, scoring two runs
in the first inning on a double by Brett Roneberg"
(3) "The Curve scored first in the first inning when Brett
Roneberg doubled to right field, driving in Jose Castillo and
Chan Perry"
(4) "Harrisburg starting and losing pitcher Blake Stein
allowed a two-run double for Brett Roneberg in the first
inning"
(5) "Reaching the major leagues is hard. Getting back is
even harder. Just ask Blake Stein
Brett Roneberg's two-out, two-run double in the first and
Shawn Garrett's one-out, three-run homer in the second were the
big blows against Stein"
(6) "To get five shutout innings out of him is terrific,"
said Brett Roneberg, whose first-inning two-run double off Blake
Stein gave Rick Palma (Curve starting pitcher) all the runs he
needed. "It helps us out, it helps the bullpen as well"
Email from Geoff
Hey,
Lots of "exciting things"!!!
1) are you going to accept your second hit in your third at bat???
2) safe at second???
3) 4 x at bats - led off three innings!!! - moving from #5 to
#1 in the lineup???
Bye, bye.
Email from Brett
Not too bad a day.
And I will take every hit I can get after the start of the year!!!
I was safe at second - easily!!!
See ya
Email from Ed Leipold - one of the "Curve Psycho Fans",
a group of season ticket holders
Hey Geoff,
Another great game last night.
Brett got the Curve off on the right foot in the 1st inning with
his 2-run double shot, and it was down hill the rest of the way.
Two quotes from Brett in this morning's Altoona Mirror....
"We weren't having too much fun at home, but now, winning
takes care of all the problems"
Then, talking about yesterday's pitcher, Rick Palma, ( who did
a great job) Brett said, " I don't think they expected five,
but to get five innings out of him is terrific"
Talked to Brett on the field, before the game, and passed along
hellos, and love, from yourself, as well as your wife and daughter.
He thanked me for the message, but we got to talk for only a minute
or two, because of the number of fans in line.
Brett, as well as most of the guys, have turned their game up
a notch, and things are really looking good for a shot at the
playoffs.
Talk to you later,
Ed

by a "chopper" to second base - out "FC 4-to-6"
------2) RHP - runner at second base/one down - ball/called/ball/called/ball/foul/ball
- walk - went to second base on another walk - but left stranded
at the end of the innings
------3) RHP - led off the inning - drove the first pitch
to deep centrefield, but caught "a few steps in front
of the warning track" - out "F8"
------4) LHP - led off the inning - ball/ball/called, and
popped up the next pitch to second base - out "F4"
------5) RHP - bases loaded!!! and two down!!! - did
not hear the first pitch, but then hit a "dribbler"
up the first base line - out "PO3"
Fielding
With one down in the bottom of the eighth inning, the next Phillies
batter drove a ball into the outfield - Brett took off after it
and, in the commentators words, he made "a fine running
grab by Roneberg in the gap at left-centrefield" and
"a great defensive play by Brett, chasing it down and
reaching out for the catch"
Email from Brett
Well last night wasn't the best,
but I felt great and really only had one bad at bat which was
the last one with the bases loaded and two out.
Way too aggressive, and got jammed on a 'pitchers pitch'!
But I saw the ball great and crushed that one ball to centre that
he caught on the track - oh, well.
Not sure what is going to happen today - it's the first day I
haven't gotten a hit so I am not sure if I will play.
Fingers crossed!
See ya.

------4) RHP - runner at third base/one down - this at bat
was in the top of the eighth inning with the score 0/0!!! - Brett

the runner from third base and the Curve took a 1/0 lead!!! -
Brett went to second base on the hit, but was left stranded again
Heard during the Game
After the walk in Brett's fourth plate appearance, the commentator
said that "Roneberg has decent speed, picks his spots,
is a good base-runner, and is a threat to steal"
"Turn Back the Clock Night" - a promotion by the
Reading Phillies
Brett,

for the Curve, who won 12 of their last 14"
(2) "The Curve sent eleven men to the plate in the fifth
matching a season-high for runs in an inning.
Six hits, two errors, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly accounted
for the tallies.
An RBI single by Joe Caruso and a two-run double by Brett Roneberg
book-ended the rally"
(3) "Altoona's Brett Roneberg had two hits and two RBI's"
A note from the Portland Sea Dogs web site
A familiar face arrived at Hadlock Friday.
Altoona first-baseman Brett Roneberg played for the Sea Dogs in
2001 before being traded to Montreal.
Roneberg was signed by Pittsburgh in the off-season as a minor-league
free agent.

------3)
LHP - runner at second base/two down - ball/foul/called/ball/ball

------4)
RHP - led off the innings - ball/ball/ball/called/foul/swing&miss

Hey Brett.
Listened to yesterdays game - that was fun.
You didn't have as much fun as the other guys today, eh!!
Better practice those check swings!
Tomorrow is another day though so good luck!
See ya.
Lots of Love.
MUM xxoo
Email from Brett
Hi.
Yeh I know those check swings were annoying, believe me!
But I did swing on them all so there is not much for me to argue
about!
Talk to you soon.
Love,
Brett.

pop fly into rightfield but this one was caught - out "F9"
------5)
LHP - runner at first base/one down - ball/called/ball/ball/foul/called
- strike out!!!
Controversy!!!
Arguement at home plate!!! - following Brett's single in his first
at bat, the Curve runner scored from second base - it was a close
play at home, with both the Sea Dogs catcher and Manager having
a few words with the plate umpire - the commentator said that
the throw from the Sea Dogs rightfielder definately beat the runner,
but it was down the first base line and the sliding Curve runner
was able to beat the tag which was high on his body - Brett got
the RBI!!!
Heard during the Game
(1) Following his hit in his second at bat, the commentator said
that "Roneberg now has 6 multi-hit games in his last 10
games, commencing Friday 20th June"
(2) As Brett came in to face the left-hand pitcher in his fifth
at bat, the commentator mentioned that "Brett does an
excellent job against lefties, and is batting 0.311 even after
going '0 for 3' against the southpaw in yesterday's game"
- and then he struck out!!!
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Chan Perry went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers to lead
the Altoona Curve's 16-hit attack in a 12-6 victory over the Portland
Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in Portland
In addition to going 4-for-5 with a pair of long balls, the 30-year
old Perry also recorded four RBI and equaled a club-record by
scoring four times in leading the Curve to its 19th win in the
month of June--a new franchise record.
Altoona jumped out to 5-0 lead before Burnett even took the mound
in the bottom of the first.
Perry opened the scoring by knocking in the first of his four
runs with an RBI double off Sea Dogs' starter and losing pitcher
Tim Kester (4-5).
Brett Roneberg followed with a run scoring single to make it
2-0
Roneberg and Josh Bonifay also enjoyed solid days at the plate
for the Curve.
Roneberg chipped in three hits in five at-bats, while Bonifay
went 2-for-4, scored three times and belted his ninth homer of
the season"
(2) "Altoona scored five two-out runs in the first inning
off Tim Kester and never looked back.
Perry hit an RBI double and Brett Roneberg delivered an RBI
single to make it 2-0.
Two errors and a bloop single followed to score three more runs"
Email from Brett
Hi
Pretty good day today.
Wouldn't have minded not getting 'rung up' on ball four in my
last at-bat against the lefty!! - but looking at the score (12/6)
he was going to ring anyone up on a close pitch.
I think I am playing Monday against a lefty - hope so anyway.
I played cards last night with the Manager and he said I was in
there so I hope I am.
See ya.

- Game #81
Listening to the game - live on internet
radio!!!
Norwich Navigators - road game at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium
Playing rightfield - batting at #4
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a walk
------1)
LHP - runner at third base/two down - ball/foul/foul, and then
lifted the next pitch into leftfield - out "F7"
------2)
LHP - led off the innings - ball/called, followed by a "three
hopper to second base" - out "4-to-3"
------3)
LHP - bases empty/one down - foul/called/ball - the broadcast
dropped out!!! - by the time I logged back in, Brett was on first
base - heard later that he picked a walk - left stranded at the
end of the innings
------4)
RHP - bases empty/two down - ground ball to second base - out
"4-to-3"
Fielding
In the bottom of the first inning, the Navigators had runners
at first and second base with none out - the next batter drove
a ball to rightfield - Brett picked it up on the bounce and, in
the commentators words, "fired a two hop throw to home
and beat the runner by five feet"!!! - he went on to
mention that "Roneberg has a strong, very good outfield
arm but doesn't get many opportunities to show it off as he is
mainly playing at first base"
Tuesday 1st July 2003
- Game #82
Listening to the game - live on internet
radio!!!
Norwich Navigators - road game
at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium
Playing leftfield - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a walk
------1)
RHP - bases empty/one down - ball/called/ball/ball/ball - walk
- and then stole to second base - went to third base on a ground
out - and scored on a balk by the Navigators pitcher (see below)
------2)
RHP - led off the innings - foul/call/ball, and then "a tapper
up the first base line" - the commentator said the "the
pitcher had to scramble off the mound over to the chalk, misplayed
it, and by the time he picked it up he missed the tag on Roneberg"
- safe at first base on an error - went to second base on a sacrifice
bunt and to third on a ground out - but was left stranded at the
end of the innings
------3)
RHP - led off the innings - foul/ball/ball, followed by a pop
up on the infield - out "F6"
------4)
?HP - led off the innings - ball/ball, and "rifled the next
pitch into rightfield" (I could hear the "crack of
the bat" in the speakers!!!) - single - went to second base
on another hit - with runners at first and second base and one
down, the next Curve batter lifted a fly ball into the outfield
- Brett tagged at second and then went to third base - the runner
at first tried for second base but was caught in a run down -
so Brett took off from third base to home - a throw was made by
the Navigators fielders but the ball went off the catcher's glove
- Brett scored
Base-running
After Brett reached third base in his first at bat, he was "bluffing
and dancing" off the base trying to distract the pitcher
- and it worked!!! - the commentator said that "the pitcher
was keeping an eye on Roney and made a move following which Brett
appealed to the third base umpire saying it was a balk"
- the umpire agreed, and Brett was given the base and scored -
the Navigators Manager and pitcher weren't too happy about this,
and "had a few words with the umpire"!!! - Brett, with
a stolen base and a balk, did a "great job of manufacturing
a run"
Stolen Bases

Record Total" increases!!! - click
