Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Rained out!!!
Thursday's game between the Altoona Curve and Harrisburg Senators
has been postponed due to rain.
A heavy thunderstorm began at 7 p.m. and drenched the field at
RiverSide Stadium forcing the game to be washed out.
The clubs will make up the contest as part of a doubleheader on
Saturday (June 14) beginning at 6:05 p.m.
Both of the games are scheduled for seven innings.
Email from Brett
Yes we got rained out, and it was a good one to have as well.
I was tired and still feeling sick but now I am okay.
Did a huge tarp slide into home plate after the game was called
off
and got a huge ovation from the crowd.
It was pretty cool.
Went to home plate and took a swing and trotted around the bases,
and then sprinted into home plate with a slide from halfway to
home to past home plate onto the grass.
Everyone was cheering!!
Made the day fun at least.
Just one today and then two tomorrow.
See ya.
and
click here to see photos of Brett doing his tarp slide!!!
Email from Geoff
Hi,
and I can picture it in my mind.
Would have been fun!!!
Friday
13th June 2003 - Game #63
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Playing first base - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - led off the innings - called/foul/foul, and
then a swing&miss - strike out!!!
------2) RHP - runner at first base/two down - ball/ball/ball
- and had the "green light" - "a pop-fly into rightfield
which dropped in for a base hit and moved the runner to third
base" - single - went to second base on a walk, but
was left stranded at the end of the innings
------3) RHP - runners at first and second base/one down
- ball, followed by a ground ball towards first base - which resulted
in "an inning ending 3-to-6-to-1 double play"!!!
------4) RHP - bases empty/two down - ball/ball, then a "high
pop fly into centrefield" - the Senators shortstop, second-baseman
and centrefielder all converged, and the catch was taken - out
"F8"
Heard during the Game
After Brett picked up a hit in his second at bat, the commentator
said that "Brett has 11 hits in his last 26 at bats and
that's an average of around 400" (the actual figure is 0.423)
Fielding
During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Senators had a runner
at first base - he was picked off, but Brett's throw to the Curve
shortstop (who was covering second base) was "a little off-line"
and the runner was able to slide around the tag - this would have
been the final out of the inning!!! - and this runner (plus another
one) eventually scored!!! - no error was recorded
Email from Brett
An "okay day" today - well, not the best!
I at least got one hit.
Better than nothing I guess.
Hope for more tomorrow.
See ya
Saturday
14th June 2003 - Double Header - Game #64 and #65
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Game One
Playing leftfield - batting at #5
Had 3 plate appearances - 2 at bats - and a walk
------1) RHP - runner at second base/two down - ball/ball/foul/ball/foul/foul,
and then another pitch outside the zone - walk - left stranded
at the end of the inning
------2) RHP - led off the innings - ball/called, followed
by a pop fly into left-centrefield - the commentator said it was
"a fine running grab by the Senators leftfielder" -
out "F7"
------3) RHP - runner at third base/one down - called/foul,
and on the next pitch Brett checked his swing but was "rung
up" on an appeal to the third base umpire - strike out!!!
- the commentator said that "Roneberg is standing there
with his hands on his hips looking unbelievingly at the umpire,
and I must say I agree with him as is didn't appear that Brett
went around"
Heard during Game One
As Brett came in for his first at bat, the game commentator said
that "Brett is very good in the local community, happily
doing speaking engagements at schools and hospitals"
Here
is a photo of Brett speaking to a group of school kids for the
Curve's anti-drug program, "Home Run against Drugs"
This page
includes letters of appreciation for his efforts, along with two
more photos
Game Two
Did not start in this
game, but it is "under suspension"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
"Many of the
5,595 fans that turned out for the twinbill stayed to watch the
first contest which was delayed by rain for two hours and 26 minutes.
Because of the later-than-expected start, game two was suspended
after five innings with the score tied 4-4 due to the Eastern
League's curfew rule.
Following the fifth inning, the umpires invoked the Eastern League
curfew rule which says that an inning or portion of an inning
can not begin after 1 a.m.
The suspended game will be finished Sunday afternoon before the
clubs' regularly scheduled contest"
Completion of the suspended game
Continuing on Sunday, the game started at the top of the sixth
inning - the Curve pitcher was due to bat second, and Brett was
put in for a 'pinch-hit'
------1) RHP - bases empty/one down - jumped on the first
pitch, and according to the commentator "he crushed that
pitch to deep left-centrefield but the fielder got over and made
the catch" - out "F7"
Email from Brett
Hi,
Got screwed one time by the umpire.
I hate it when that happens.
Idiots!!
Anyway, I'm not sure why I didn't play in the second game.
Not going to play tomorrow because a lefty is throwing,
but our pitcher is hitting second in the suspended game, so I
will probably hit then.
Who knows though!
See ya
Sunday 15th June 2003 - Game #66
--
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Did not start the game,
but came in on a "double switch" during the bottom
of the sixth inning - went to leftfield and was #9 in the order
------1) RHP - led off the innings - ball/ball/ball/called,
followed by another ball - walk - out at second on a double play
hit by the next Curve batter
------2) LHP - who came into the game as Brett
stepped into the box - TOP
OF THE NINTH INNINGS!!! - BASES LOADED!!! - ONE DOWN!!! - AND
THE CURVE WERE TRAILING 9 RUNS TO 7!!! - swing&miss, followed
by a line drive base hit into right-centrefield!!! - and the
tying runs crossed the plate!!! - single and 2 x RBI's - went to second base on a wild pitch
in the dirt - to third base on a hit, and scored on a sacrifice-fly
Base-running
After Brett scored on the sacrifice-fly, the Senators appealed
to the third base umpire that he had left the base early before
the catch was made - the appeal was dismissed, and in the commentator's
words, "Brett had done the right thing"!!!
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "After Joe Caruso singled home Shawn Garrett
with the first run of the inning, Brett Roneberg provided the
key hit--a two-run single off Bentz to even the score at 9-9.
RBI singles by Kevin Nicholson and B.J. Barns, a sacrifice fly
by Chan Perry and a steal of home by Shaun Skrehot completed the
Curve's most productive inning of the season and the 13-9 win"
(2) "In game two, Harrisburg pitcher Pat Collins took the
mound with a 9-6 lead.
The Senators committed an error, Collins walked two and allowed
a single to load the bases.
Former Harrisburg outfielder, Brett Roneberg, had the game
tying two-run single in the ninth off Harrisburg reliever Chad
Bentz"
(3) "Harrisburg, leading 9-6 after a three-run sixth fueled
by the charity of three Altoona errors, was poised to end a four-game
homestand with an ugly win.
Instead, it turned into a really ugly loss when third baseman
Felix Diaz's throwing error combined with a shaky bullpen to allow
Altoona to score seven runs - just three earned - in the top of
the ninth.
Brett Roneberg's two-run single was the biggest non-self-inflicted
blow against Harrisburg"
Email from Geoff
Hi,
and I was up at 3.00am to listen.
Heard your at bat in the suspended game where you "crushed"
the ball but were caught.
Sat through the scheduled game, and heard your walk and "the
big at bat" in the top of the ninth!!!
As I wrote yesterday, if you want to read what we heard, click
"What's New" and go to Sunday's report.
What WE heard???
Yes,
Sharon was listening!!!
It was about 7.45am Monday morning and she was all ready for work,
but stayed to listen to your at bat!!!
See you,
and good luck in the seven home games.
Bye, bye.
Email from Ed Leipold - one of the "Curve Psycho Fans",
a group of season ticket holders
Hey Geoff,
How about them Curve guys?
6 errors, but still pull it out with 7 in the 9th,
and lately, not just today, Brett has been right in the middle
of all the good stuff.
Should be a good trip back to BCB tonight with all the guys in
a great mood, ready for the next 7 at home.
Next Sunday is photo and autograph day with the team out on the
field for an hour before the game, to meet and greet the fans,
so I'll be talking to Brett then, if not before.
Talk to you later.
GO CURVE!
Ed
......and a reply to Ed
Hi Ed,
and I was up and listening at 3.00am Monday morning over here.
Heard the completion of the suspended game, and the "wild"
game that followed!!!
Agree that it was a great win for the Curve, and it will mean
a big confidence boost for the BCB games.
You should have been able to hear Sharon and I yelling and cheering
when Brett drove in the tying runs!!! - especially against the
lefty that was brought in as he stepped to the plate!!!
Enjoy the seven at home, and we wish we were sitting there with
you!!!
Say hello to Brett from his "Dad, Mum and Sister" if
you do catch up with him.
Regards,
Geoff.

16th June 2003 - Game #67
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Trenton Thunder - home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing leftfield - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 3 at bats - and a 'sacrifice bunt'
------1) RHP - bases empty/one down - called, followed by
a line drive into centrefield - single (and it was the first hit of the ball
game coming in the bottom of the second inning with one down)
- stolen base to second, and the commentator said "it
is a steal for Roney" - and scored on a ground ball error
by the Thunder infield
------2) RHP - led off the innings - called/foul/called -
strike out!!!
------3) RHP - runners at first and second base/none down
- hit the first pitch - but into a "3-to-6-to-3" double
play!!!
------4) LHP - runners at first and second base/none down
- the same situation as his last at bat, and this time the Curve
Manager asked him to lay down a bunt - squared around but took
the pitch which was a strike, and then bunted the next pitch successfully,
moving the runners to second and third base
Base-running
When Brett was standing on first and before he stole to second
base, the commentator said that "Brett has better than
average speed, but needs to pick his spot" - and then
he stole the base!!!
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Altoona's Brett Roneberg scored on an error by
shortstop Teuris Olivares to give the Curve a 1-0 lead in the
second"
(2) "Brett Roneberg scored the game's first run in
the second inning.
He singled with one out, stole second and came home when Olivares'
throw on a ground ball by Chris Duffy eluded Aaron Rifkin"

Tuesday
17th June 2003 - Game #68
Listening to the game -
live on internet radio!!!
Trenton Thunder
- home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing first base - batting at #5
Had 3 plate appearances - 3 at bats
------1) RHP - bases empty/one down - ball/foul/foul/ball,
followed by "a chopper up the middle for a base hit"
- single - the next Curve batter hit a potential double-play
ball to the Thunder shortstop, but according to the commentator
"Brett was safe at second because he was going" - left
stranded at the end of the inning
------2) RHP - led off the innings - did not hear the first
pitch, but popped-up the next delivery to shortstop - out "F6"
------3) RHP - runner at first base/one down - again the
commentators did not call the first pitch, but with an 0/1 count
Brett grounded into a "6-to-4-to-3" double play
Note
This game was called after six and a half innings - the game was
played in almost continuous rain, and by this stage the field
had become "unplayable and dangerous" - after
five innings, the game is official, and the Curve were leading
and were awarded the win

double play!!! (Thunder player is Andy

third at bat!!!

Listening to the game - live on internet
radio!!!
Trenton Thunder - home game at Blair County Ballpark
Playing first base - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1)
RHP - bases empty/one down - ball/swing&miss/swing&miss/foul
ball which was to deep, deep rightfield but went foul and according
to the commentators it was "about fifteen feet to the
right of the foul pole" - Brett then hit "pop fly
base hit into leftfield" - single - and was left stranded at the end of the innings
------2)
RHP - bases empty/one down - ball/swing&miss/called/ball,
and in the commentators words, "ripped the next pitch
into rightfield but straight at the fielder" - "you
can't hit a ball any harder than that" - but out "F9"
unfortunately!!!
------3)
RHP - runners at first and second base/one down - foul/ball/ball/ball,
and then hit the next pitch towards second base - could have been
a double play ball but it was "bobbled" by the fielder,
who recovered in time to get Brett at first - out "4-to-3"
------4)
RHP - bases empty/two down - ball/ball/foul, and lifted the next
pitch "fairly deep into leftfield but the fielder got over
there" - out "F7"
Heard during the Game
As Brett came in for his second at bat, the commentator said that
"Roneberg has reached base safely in 17 of his last 19
games"
Fielding
In the top of the fourth inning, the Thunder lead off batter hit
a pop up down the first base line - Brett turned and gave chase,
and in the commentators words "a great over-the-shoulder
catch by Brett Roneberg - a fine play"

second base - out "4-to-3"
Email from Geoff to Sharon and Tanya
Thursday's game.
Just started, but Brett is not in the lineup.
Dunno why, because Harrisburg have a right-hander on the mound
-- ???
He might get a 'pinch hit' later - there is no "DH"
in the next four games.
Email from Brett
Hi.
Disappointed that I didn't play today,
and from what I can guess I am not playing Friday either - lefty
pitching.
But today - just not sure.
Starting to feel good as well,
but then 'pinch hit' and got out.
It is hard pinch hitting,
but I think I am probably going to do it today - so I will be
ready.
See ya

Hi,
and, yep, we heard every pitch!!!
After waiting from 9.00am until nearly 11.00am due to the rain
delay!!!
Listened to Rob Egan and Jason Dambach doing the pre-game show
and stuff - they were just trying to fill in the time!!!
Really glad you were in the "starting nine" and had
the chance to show "your stuff" against the lefty!!!
Also there are the details of your latest "mini" hitting
streak and on-base streak.
Have a great one on Saturday!!!
Love,
Dad.

Hey Brett.
Good win today.
It was fun listening.
How did you like playing rightfield for a change?
Sounds like you didn't think you were going to play and I am guessing
you are glad you did!
Good luck tomorrow.
Love ya heaps.

After his second at bat, the commentator said that "Roneberg
has been swinging a better stick of late" (refer to
the note above from the Curve web site before the game)
Base-running
After Brett hit his lead off double, the next two Curve batters
popped out - when the third batter was at the plate, the commentator
mentioned a couple of times that "Brett is getting a very
good, agressive lead at second base, and it must be distracting
for the pitcher"
Fielding
(1) The lead off hitter for the Senators in the top of the sixth
inning "belted" a pitch straight at Brett fielding at
first base - the commentator said that "Roney handled
that, and fields his position very well"
(2) In the top of the ninth inning, Brett was the 'middle' of
a "good 1-to-3-to-4" pick off"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
