CURVE COMPLETES SWEEP OF SENATORS
WITH MARATHON 15-INNING WIN
Chris Heintz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 15th
inning as the Curve completed a three-game sweep of the Harrisburg
Senators with a 2-1 victory on Sunday night at Blair County Ballpark.
The win improves the Curve's record to 30-29 and moves the
club into sole possession of second place in the Eastern League's
Southern Division standings.
The Curve plated the winning run in the 15th off of Senators'
reliever Luis Torres, who falls to 0-3 on the season.
Clint Chrysler tossed a scoreless top of the 15th to pick up the
win.
Chrysler even played a key part in the Curve bringing home the
winning run.
After Heintz led off the frame with a single to left, Chrysler
dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt one batter later to move
the winning run into scoring position.
Two batters later, with Jose Castillo facing a two-strike count
and two outs in the inning, Torres uncorked a slider past catcher
Scott Ackerman, allowing Heintz to race home with the winning
tally.
Lost in the length of the game were the outstanding performances
by both of the game's starting pitchers--Ron Chiavacci for Harrisburg
and Landon Jacobsen of the Curve.
Chiavacci, a third-year starter on the Senators' pitching staff
who had been struggling prior to his start on Sunday night, did
not allow a run on just two hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work,
and left the game with a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Jacobsen, who was coming off his worst start of the
season last Sunday at Trenton, rebounded to toss eight strong
innings, allowing just one run on five hits, walking none and
fanning six.
Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Curve was
able to force extra innings thanks to some shaky Harrisburg defense.
The Senators committed two errors in the frame, including a botched
double play on which Chris Duffy scored from third to even the
game at 1-1.
After taking a 1-0 lead against Jacobsen in the third inning,
Harrisburg's offense went dormant throughout the remainder of
the game.
The Curve bullpen of Neal McDade, Todd Ozias, Jeff Bennett and
Chrysler combined to toss seven shutout innings before the Curve
finally broke the deadlock in the 15th.
Offensively, the Curve
was led by Brett Roneberg, who went 3-for-6, including singles
in the 7th, 9th and 12th innings.
No other Curve hitter posted more than one hit.
Brett's Plate Appearances
Playing left field - batting at #5 - and had 6 x at bats
#1 - RHP - runners at first and second base/two down -
called/ball, then "drilled the next pitch to rightfield"
- but out "F9"
#2 - RHP - bases empty/one down - called/foul, followed
by a ground ball to second base - out "4-to-3"
#3 - RHP - bases empty/one down - called/ball/foul/ball/foul,
and then a line drive into leftfield - single - and was the potential
tying run in a 1-0 ball game in the bottom of the seventh inning!!!
- after picking up this single off the right-handed starting pitcher,
the Senators made a pitching change, bringing in a left-hander
- and before he threw a pitch he had Brett caught too far off
first base and tagged out in a run-down play!!! - "a base
running mistake by Roneberg" - caught stealing
#4 - LHP - bases empty/one down - called/called, and drove
the next pitch down the line past the diving third-baseman - single
- and was the potential winning run in the bottom of the ninth
inning!!! - but tagged out on a double play hit by the next Curve
batter
#5 - RHP - leading off the twelfth inning with the score
tied 1-1!!! - called/foul/ball, and then a hit "deep into
the hole at shortstop" - and the Senators fielder had no
play!!! - infield single - and the potential winning run again!!!
- sacrificed to second base, and then went to third on a groundout
- but was left stranded at the end of the inning
#6 - RHP - leading off the fourteenth inning with the score
tied 1-1!!! - foul/ball/ball/ball/foul, and then a grounder towards
second base - out "4-to-3"
