- faced a "Top Prospect"
(1) "Jeremy Guthrie pitched a three-hitter as the Akron Aeros
blanked the Altoona Curve, 4-0.
Guthrie (3-0), making just his fifth professional start, struck
out six without issuing a walk in his first career shutout.
The 24-year-old Guthrie, who was the Cleveland Indians' first-round
pick in last year's draft, permitted just one baserunner to get
as far as third base"
Email from Kip Lewis - who attended the
game
Well, we made it to our first Curve
game today.
Beautiful weather (70 and sunny with a bit of a breeze),
but doggone it... no runs on the scoreboard!
Shut out 4-0 (with three hits) by Jeremy Guthrie and the Akron
Aeros.
Mr. Guthrie must have really had something on the ball, as there
didn't seem to be many well hit balls by the Curve.
The first four Curve hitters of the game (including #17) all hit
bleeders to the infield.
The radar gun didn't register much above 88-90 for Guthrie, so
I assumed it was his movement that had the hitters off balance.
I happened to hear the radio guys (radio broadcasts are played
over speakers in the concession area) say that Guthrie could be
playing in Cleveland before the summer is through... he's that
good.
I guess you heard that too if you listen to the games.

Bowie Baysox - road game at Prince George's Stadium

Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats

------2) RHP - runner at second base - RBI single to centrefield, and went to second on the throw home - left stranded

------3) RHP - runner at third base - hit into the hole,
but covered by the second-baseman - out "4-to-3"
------4) LHP - another RBI opportunity with a runner at third
base - count was 1 ball/2 strikes, and Brett "swung at one
in the dirt" - strike out!!!
Fielding
Made some good plays at first base, including a "nice 3-to-1
play"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "The Curve opened the scoring in the third inning against
Bowie right-hander Juan Rosario, who entered the game with a 9.95
ERA in his first four starts.
With two outs and Kevin Nicholson at second base, Jose Castillo
ripped a double to the left-centerfield wall that scored Nicholson
and gave the Curve a 1-0 lead.
One batter later, Brett Roneberg came through with an RBI
single scoring Castillo"
(2) "Altoona scored first with two runs in the third against
Baysox starter Juan Rosario.
Jose Castillo had an RBI-double and scored on a Brett Roneberg
single to make it 2-0"
(3) "1B Brett Roneberg went 2 for 4 with an RBI"
"Things I heard during the broadcasts"
Just after Brett got his second hit, the game commentator said
that "Dale Sveum (Curve Manager) is very impressed with,
and was raving about Roneberg before the game"
He went on to say that Dale was talking to the team about "staying
on top of the ball" and used Brett as an example
saying that "you only have to tell him once and he does it
perfectly"
The commentator also mentioned that he watched the Curve batting
practise and said "I saw Brett put on a real batting display"
Email from Brett
My game - I was pretty
happy with it!!!!
My swing is so close to being where I need it to be.
I am almost there and the games are consistent but just not quite
enough power,
but that will come for sure.
Hope you all enjoyed it.
It was a pretty good first month for me.
Will get some more homers soon!!!
See ya.

(2) "Altoona tallied a pair of runs in the third to take

Chan Perry"

------4) RHP - another ground ball to second base - out "4-to-3"
------5) LHP - top of the tenth inning - scores tied ay four

(1) "Frank Brooks, who served up the homer and took the loss,
pitched well, entering the 10th with two on and two outs and shutting
down the Curve by striking out No.3 hitter Brett Roneberg"
Email from Brett
Hope you all got to see the game on the computer.
Was a little rough.
I talked to my guy from California, Joe Aversa, and he calmed
me down a little.
As I said, my swing is not there but it is close.
Going early to get some work in tomorrow, and will let you know
how it all goes.
Crushed that double today to - almost hit it through the fence,
I think!
Will get them again tomorrow.
Also, the good thing that Joe told me is that I am not hitting
well but I am hitting 0.280.
By saying that I mean I haven't gotten hot yet but I am right
there.
It will come for sure.
Talk to you all tomorrow.
See ya
Email from Geoff
Hey you,
and I can guess how you might be feeling.
Things don't appear to be "clicking" for you right now,
and I would guess that you hate those bloody "4-to-3"
plays as much as we do!!!
I am not going to say anything about that because I'm not there.
More importantly, you have guys all around you who have the experience
and qualifications necessary to help you out of this hassle.
But that's not to say I'm not "worried" because I am!!!
It was really reassuring to read your email, and that you had
the chance to ring Joe.
And it's great to see that you can get some extra work in tomorrow
morning - hope you can do that lots.
You don't have to say anything about the double and how hard you
hit it.
BECAUSE WE SAW IT - LIVE!!!
And it looked great!!!
The "streaming video" was pretty good - a couple of
bad patches here and there, but we saw all your at bats clearly
plus a lot of shots of you at first base.
We were "silently praying" that you would rip out a
great shot when the go ahead run was sitting at second base!!!
Be tough over there, #17.
You can fight your way out of this spot!!!
You know you have our support and best wishes every single time
you step up to the plate.
Love,
Dad.
Email from Sharon
Hey Brett
It was amazing watching you play!!
I was crotcheting 'cause I don't have to look at it while I am
doing it!!
and Tanya was doing her nails
and Dad was drinking coffee!
Your double was great to watch
and we all had our fingers crossed when you ended up striking
out - I know you would have been cranky about that but it isn't
the end of the world!
I know you have to work hard at all the technical stuff and see
in your email you are doing all that stuff to improve your results.
Remember to have fun playing and don't think too much - remember
you told me a high percentage of batting troubles are in your
head!!
You got some pretty crappy throws today too eh!! - but you looked
great there at first at first base and you won too!!
Good luck tomorrow
This is one of those "no-one loves you like your Mum "
emails
See ya!
Email from Brett
Thanks Mum.
I don't like getting the "We are worried emails" at
all, but I guess there isn't a way around that.
Things are going well.
I am swinging ok - just not great.
I am doing fine.
