Three hit game!!!

Sunday 20th April 2003

Home game (Blair County Ballpark) against the Bowie Baysox

(The complete boxscore is at the end of this page)

Game report from the Altoona Mirror newspaper (by Cory Giger)
Curve squander lead again, fall on 11th-inning misplay

Easter Sunday started off great for the Curve, but they ended up with egg on their faces.
A 3-0 lead in the first inning gave way to a tie game by the fifth, and Bowie spoiled the holiday for 3,564 fans with a 4-3 win in 11 innings at Blair County Ballpark.
"We've been getting runs in one inning and not bearing down hard enough later in the game," the Curve's Brett Roneberg said. "We're going to have to stop doing that if we're going to win some ballgames."

Curve Bats Go Cold in Loss to Baysox
Brett Roneberg flirted with Altoona Curve history at the start of Easter Sunday.

But the day ended with the Curve continuing to flirt with a batting funk.
The Curve jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to drop a 4-3 decision to the Bowie Baysox at Blair County Ballpark.

It marked the second consecutive time and the fourth in the last five games that the Curve failed to hold a lead of three or more runs.
On Saturday, Altoona took a 5-2 lead into the ninth, only to drop a 6-5 verdict in 10 innings.
Bowie pitchers held the Curve (7-8) to only four hits over the last 10 innings, and retired 13 consecutive men at one pivotal point.
"We're kind of in one of those funks where one little mistake bites us, and we can't finish off a game," said Curve manager Dale Sveum. "More importantly, we're not getting the big hit when we need it."
"We've been swinging the bats well," said Roneberg, who tripled, doubled and singled in his first three at-bats.
"It's just that lately we've been getting runs in one inning, and then not bearing down and having enough later in the game."

Willie Romero led off the 11th against Rick Palma (0-1) with a single which right fielder Shawn Garrett misplayed into a two-base error that put Romero at third.
One out later Willis Otanez hit a ground ball that third baseman Ray Navarrete struggled to handle cleanly, leaving him with no choice but to make the easy play as Romero scampered home with the winning run.
Altoona grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Roneberg tripled home Chris Duffy and Navarrete.
Fernando Rijo, who failed to retire the first five batters, then allowed Chan Perry to reach on a fielder's choice as his attempt to cut down Roneberg at third was late.
Chris Heintz then singled home Roneberg.
Roneberg also singled in the third and doubled in the fifth, creating the opportunity to become the first player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.
But he was called out on strikes in the eighth, and he tapped out to pitcher Rodney Ormond (1-1) to lead off the 11th.

By that time Altoona had long since gone cold.
The Curve bats failed to muster a hit from the sixth inning to the 11th.
Bowie pitchers set down 13 consecutive batters after Josh Bonifay drew a leadoff walk in the seventh.
"I don't think we were aggressive enough at all," said Sveum. "We had a lot of poor swings while ahead in the count."
Bowie (9-5) scored its first run off starter Ben Shaffar in the fourth inning when Willis Otanez drove in Mike Fontenot on a ground out.
The Baysox tied the score in the fifth on Kelly Ramos' two-run homer.
Left-hander Brady Borner retired the first eight batters in a scoreless three-inning stint to keep the Curve in the game.
But the Baysox's Brian Forystek, John Parrish and Ormond allowed only two hits over the last six innings.
Sveum is not worried, even the Curve have lost five of their last six games.
"They'll bounce back," he said. "They're professional guys. We'll be all right."

From the Post-Gazette newspaper
LF Brett Roneberg, who had three hits, tripled home two runs in a three-run first inning.

BOWIE TAKES SECOND STRAIGHT EXTRA-INNING CONTEST FROM CURVE

For the fourth time in its last five games, the Curve failed to hold a lead of three or more runs and fell to the Bowie Baysox 4-3 in 11 innings on Easter Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.
With the game tied at 3-3, the Baysox plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th against Curve reliever Rick Palma, when with a runner at third and one out, Willis Otanez hit a grounder to third base that was fielded by Ray Navarrete, who appeared to have a play at the plate on the Baysox' runner, Willie Romero.
However, Navarrete couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time to throw home to retire the runner and was forced to throw to first, allowing Romero to score the go-ahead run.
The run was set up when Romero, leading off the inning, blooped a single into right-field that was misplayed by Shawn Garrett, putting a runner at third with no outs.
Bowie reliever Rodney Ormond (1-1) closed out the win by shutting down the Curve offense in the bottom of the 11th.
The win moved the Baysox into the lead in the Eastern League's Southern Division with a 9-5 record.
Meanwhile, after a 6-3 start, the Curve has now dropped five of its last six games to fall to 7-8 overall.
The afternoon started well for the Curve, as its offense touched up Bowie starter Fernando Rijo for three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Brett Roneberg that scored Chris Duffy and Ray Navarrete.
Two batters later, Chris Heintz laced an RBI single to right to score Roneberg and give the Curve a 3-0 lead.

However, the Curve offense failed to produce another run the rest of the game against Rijo and three relievers.
Bowie chipped away at the lead against Curve starter Ben Shaffar, scoring a single run in the fourth before backup catcher Kelly Ramos drilled a two-run homer over the right-field wall in the fifth inning to knot the game at 3-3.
The Curve also blew leads of three or more runs in the final two games of the Harrisburg series earlier in the week and couldn't hold a 5-2 lead entering the ninth inning of Saturday night's game, which was eventually won by Bowie, 6-5 in 10 innings.
Palma (0-1) took the loss for the Curve, giving up the go-ahead run in the 10th.
Shaffar pitched longer than any Curve starter had to this point in the season, going six innings allowing three runs on eight hits to earn a no-decision.
Roneberg was the offensive star for the Curve, going 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple in a losing effort.
Heintz went 1-for-4 to extend his team-high hitting streak to seven straight games.
Duffy's Eastern League-leading 13-game on-base streak came to a close as he went 0-for-4.

From the USA Today Minor League Baseball web site
Willie Romero scored the game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning as the Bowie Baysox edged the Altoona Curve, 4-3.
Romero singled and advanced to third base on an error by Altoona rightfielder Shawn Garrett to lead off the inning.
One out later, Romero scored on a groundout by Willis Otanez to put Bowie ahead, 4-3.
Otanez, who leads the Baysox with nine RBI despite a .147 batting average (5-for-34), had an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to put Bowie on the board.
Kelly Ramos slugged a two-run homer in the fifth for the Baysox, tying it at 3-3.
Rodney Ormond (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit ball to get the win.
Overall, three Bowie relievers combined for six scoreless frames of two-hit ball.
Brett Roneberg had three hits, including a two-run triple for the Curve, who have lost five of six games.
Rick Palma (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing one unearned run in two innings.

A comment from Rob Egan, the Altoona Curve game announcer
By the way…
nice day for Brett today (3-for-5, triple, double, two RBI, run)
Too bad the Curve lost, 4-3 in 11 innings.

A brief note from the Bowie Baysox home page
Just like the previous night, the afternoon did not start well for the Baysox.
The Curve (7-8) touched up Bowie starter Fernando Rijo for three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Brett Roneberg.
Two batters later, Chris Heintz laced an RBI-single to right, scoring Roneberg, to give the Curve a 3-0 lead.

From the Nepa News web site
Bowie 4 - Altoona 3 - 11 innings

Willis Otanez grounded out twice but drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the eleventh inning, as the Bowie Baysox beat the Altoona Curve 4-3 on Sunday in the Eastern League.
Otanez's game-winning hit wasn't pretty - a slow dribbler to third base off a broken bat - but it was enough to bring Willie Romero in for the winning run.
Rodney Ormond worked two scoreless innings of relief, including the 11th, for the win.
Rick Palma took the loss as Altoona dropped its fourth game in five days.
Brett Roneberg's two-run triple and Chris Heintz's RBI single gave Altoona a 3-0 lead in the first.
Otanez cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth with an RBI groundout.
Roneberg went 3-for-5 while Joey Hammond was 3-for-5 for Bowie.

Yeh, that felt pretty good.

A note from Kip Lewis, who was listening in Pennsylvania!!!
Send some of that hot weather our way!
I still haven't made it to a game!
Every time I think about it the weather takes a nasty turn - then when I have other plans the day turns out fairly nice.
I'm aiming for next weekend again.
Looks like the base hits are starting to fall in for Brett lately... two Saturday and three yesterday.
I was pulling for him to hit the roller coaster yesterday, so he could complete the cycle.
