From Geoff ... Tuesday 20th February 2007
Reference ... phone call from Mrs McDonald on Monday 19th February
2007 ... telephone 03 5236 2237
Living in country Victoria, south of Geelong ... interested in
the MEERS family (is a relative)
Hi again, Mrs McDonald
It was nice to talk yesterday ... but there was a "spilt
coffee accident" on my desk and my notes were "sorta
washed away" !!
Fortunately your email address was still readable, but not your
Christian name and that is why I am referring to you as Mrs McDonald
!!
You will notice at the bottom of this email there are a number
of web site links in our email signature, but to use these initially
might be a bit confusing
As I mentioned yesterday, there are hundreds of thousands of
pages in our site, and over 65,000 photos and files
To make it a bit easier, I suggest that you initially - CLICK HERE
The first place to look would be the links to the "Family
History" and these are right at the top of the page
Just a note here ... these pages are on my "To Be Updated
As Soon As Possible" list
They were put together a number of years ago when I was just
learning how to build a web site, and I now want to redesign
them and make them a bit easier to follow
Still, just read the pages and click on any of the links that
you might be interested in
The next thing to do would be to click on the link that says
"Dad and Mum"
This albumn is divided in to numerous easy-to-follow sections,
and include lots of pics of both James and Louisa Meers, including
the 'horse-and-dray' photo you mentioned
After that, I would suggest scrolling right to the bottom of
the above page and click on the link that says "Memories
of Gladstone"
This is a recent project I have started, and it includes numerous
links to follow
There is also some great shots of our home - HERE
- and then scroll towards the bottom of the page
Well, that's about it for a start
Enjoy looking through the pages, and I hope the info is useful
to you
Send a note anytime if you wish
Regards ... Geoff
From Margaret ... Friday 23rd February 2007
Received the information with delight, and also your phone call
last night (we were away)
I didn't know about the Beerworth ancestry so that is very interesting
too but still on the Meers trail
For your reference, I am Margaret Veronica McDonald, the elder
of Kathleen (your mum's bridesmaid) and Daniel Meers' family
(and now the senior family member)
I was at The 50th Wedding Anniversary at Hallett - HERE
- but when the grandchildren's photo was taken I was asleep as
I was on night duty (Royal Adelaide Hospital nurse)
The unknown child being held would have been the second of Joe
Meers' family ... I don't know their order
Incidently, I do have some contact with their son Daniel
Our family is spread around
....................Carliene (Edwards) is in Andamooka
....................John is in Murray Bridge
....................Robert is in Brisbane
....................Ronda (Casey) and Leonie (Yeo) are in Adelaide
....................Rose (Mills) is in Darwin, and
....................Joanne (Hawkins) is also in Adelaide
It is for John's grand daughter that I'm trying to get the Meers'
history
It is for a school assignment and I have always been 'going to
do something' ... now I have to ... so what you've sent is great
I'm not good with the internet and can't get enough information
from State Libraries, etc
We live on a farm at Birregurra in the south south/west of Victoria
... near Colac and inland from Lorne
Ian amd I have:-
....................Sam is married to Kylie and has two boys Bryce (7)
and Josh (4)
....................Mary (35) works with horses in England ... at present
based at Scone in New South Wales
....................Gerard (33) is home with us on the farm ... lives
independently, and
....................Emmalie married Clinton Cain and has Jim (2) and Amber
(8mths) ... station managers near Arlethan in New South Wales
So that's us
Hope to keep in touch
Finally, Judith Broolman this week sent photos of Nanna and we
think her parents
Regards ... Marg
From Geoff ... Saturday 24th February 2007
Hi again
It is sometimes frustrating trying to get "info from the
past" together !!
As I mentioned in my last note, I am going to revamp the pages
that I sent, plus add anything new that I can get my hands on
And if I find new information or photos for the MEERS FAMILY,
I will definately send it on to you
It will probably be too late for the school assignment, but I
would think you would like to have it anyway
You wrote in your note ... "Finally, Judith Broolman this
week sent photos of Nanna and we think her parents"
Hey, I would love copies of these ... I am not sure if you have
a scanner, but if you do, would you mind sending them to me ??
I find it best if the shots are scanned at 600dpi at least, and
this gives me a good and big size to work with ... thanks
All the best, and I will stay in touch
Geoff
From Margaret ... Sunday 25th February 2007
Geoff
This a copy of what I sent on to Rachel
For her exercise I've allowed some guesswork as she needs it
this week and I'll put some photos in the mail for her
Now I am on the trail now to get the Meers'
family as accurate as possible
I have tried to send you the grandparents photos but the email
hasn't gone ... will retry later
Incidentally, I forwarded your data on to Daniel Meers and he
was delighted ... hope that was okay
Regards ... Marg

I don't have a good scanner so have tried photography ... can
redo them if they're not suitable

Hello Geoff
I have just stumbled onto a Google Page about the Mt Bryan Church
windows and a note from you that you had almost fallen from your
chair ... likewise for me ... but with glee !! - CLICK
HERE
Only two weeks ago I passed through Mt Bryan on a memory trip
I lived there with my parents Daniel and Kathleen and younger
sister Carliene until about 1942 when we moved to Terowie
How I wish I'd known about the church windows then !!
At Terowie I can recall as a child hearing in the distance grandpa
coming in with his teams of horses from damsinking and the excitement
when they did arrive
So the sale of the plant would have been on his retirement -
CLICK
HERE
On my trip I also took a photo of the old home in Hallett, now
derelict, and I'll send this later - CLICK
HERE
I'm the family matriarch now and not very good at finding family
history online nor visiting the resource centres
I have a stumbling block with great grandfather Daniel, born
to James (mother not recorded) and buried at Carrieton
My dilema is that James and Judith arrived in Australia with
John and Elizabeth, and if Daniel belongs to them, he was born
in Drycreek
But in the first South Australian Census, there were a James
and Johanna with two boys at Dry Creek but I cannot find any
further reference to them
And as grandfather James went to school at Carrieton I'm assuming
Daniel belongs to Judith and is buried within the confines of
their plot with Mary
I have photos which I will send you - CLICK
HERE
I see my photos of Mary and William are on site ... the originals
are treasured here at home
Would love to hear from you sometime
Best wishes ... Marg
From Geoff ... Tuesday 26th October 2010
Hi ... and it's great to hear from you ... again !!
Yes, we had contact way back in 2007 and below are copies of
a couple of emails that you sent during February of that year
... these followed an intial phone call contact (refer above
for this contact)
I have written to you a couple of times since then, the last
being in May this year
I was sending to this email address ... kingoonya@eftel.net.au
... but they were coming back undeliverable, etc
I have also included a copy of a Meers Family Tree you were preparing
at that time for a School Project being done by Rachel
In the Family Tree, and from what I can establish, it appears
that Daniel's wife Mary McCabe was the daughter of John McCabe
and Ellen Frost and not Austen and Mary McCabe !! ... but everything
needs confirming, eh ... and I wish they had computers and digital
cameras back in those days !!
Now, this is only a "HELLO" email
At the moment, a local sporting club is having a working bee
putting up a new fence around the fields ... and I was 'silly'
enough to volunteer and am tied up most of the day, but once
this job is finished I'll sit down and write a 'proper' note
!!
The Leadlight Windows were a great "find" ... and it's
a real pity that you didn't see them on your trip ... next time
!! - CLICK
HERE
As you would have seen at Section #10 on The Meers Family History
Index Page - HERE
- I also have a stumbling block when it comes to Daniel's parents
... but we'll get it all worked out one day !!
I have lots of bits of information mentioning him, but I have
not uploaded it yet because I am not sure if it is right and/or
accurate
More about that later
I also have other Meers details ready to include on the site
... more about the Windows, more on James and Louisa, etc
I will put you on the mailing list so that your email will be
included on any future Update Newsletters
Also, feel free to send my details on to anyone you feel may
be able to help in any way in this Family History search
Please, please send me any photos you have ... including the
old Hallett Home and any other shots or info you have ... would
love to have them !!
Could I ask that you scan these at a minimum of 600dpi ... this
makes a large file and it takes time to sent but this size allows
me to crop, adjust and highlight various sections of each photo
All the best and will write again very soon
Regards ... Geoff

You mentioned in your first note that this is "now derelict"
What a shame ... a nice looking place and Sharon and I would
love to live there !!
Another question ... do you remember the complete and full street
address ??
As I said yesterday, there is still a few days work left to go
on this sporting clubs fence but as soon as that's finished I
will contact you about the other information I have on the Meers
Family
Have a nice day
Bye ... Geoff
From Margaret ... Wednesday 27th October 2010
Emails have arrived ... thank you
The James and Judith Meers family arrived with Elizabeth aged
two and John aged one
Elizabeth married Michael OHalloran
She died in 1907 and the death certificate has James OHalloran
(friend) as informant
I feel that James Meers is within the plot too but no stone
Also, when having another look at your superb collection of information,
I noticed you have listed Nanna Meers as Mary McCabe (titled
... two stages of her life)
The bottom photos are of her daughter in law, our nanna, Louisa
Beerworth, wife of James Joseph Meers - CLICK
HERE
I've sent your address on to my sister Leonie in Adelaide so
she can see the windows at Mt Bryan ... again, what a find !!
The Hallett house ... no address
I haven't tried, but it would be the only house in the paddock
from the first road (right) off the main road from Burra if you
try Google Earth
Keep up the good work and have fun
Regards ... Marg
From Geoff ... Thursday 28th October 2010
... and Good Morning again
Next week I'm going to be searching and searching to find and
confirm as much detail as I can on this elusive and mysterious
Mr Daniel Meers and his parents, etc, etc !!
Looking forward to the chase ... and will definately let you
know of any results
In respect to the "McCabe / Meers" photos, I have updated
the page - CLICK
HERE
The initial information I received came from Tim McCabe and out
of courtesy to him, I now have both lots of details on the page
... you will see what I mean when you click on the page
Another search .... find out more about the Meers' Home ... and
again, will let you know what happens
One other note ... in your email above, you call Grandpa "James
Joseph" ... I have always known him as "James John"
and that is what is inscribed on his headstone - CLICK
HERE
Is the "Joseph" like a confirmation name or ??
Have a nice day ... perfect weather up here in the tropics

OOPS !! ... it is James John of course
Have you got this pic of Daniel ?? - CLICK

Marg
From Geoff ... Friday 29th October 2010
WOW !! ... Fantastic !! ... and again, Thank You
This 'voluntary working bee' at the Sporting Grounds is getting
close to being finished
We have put in all the posts and rails ... now comes the job
of hanging around six hundred metres of 2.3 metre high fencing
wire !! ... will be very glad when it's done !!
In the meantime, I was able to do a little bit of searching around
about Daniel
In the Family Tree you sent over during February 2007 (I also
included a copy in one of my notes a couple of days ago) it was
stated that James and Judith Meers arrived in Adelaide on 5th
November 1849 on the ship "Charlotte"
I searched for that ship, but had no luck at all
But I then started looking for the Family's arrival under a different
search title/topic ... and found them !!
The date is right ... but the ship's name was "Constance"
I will get all the details uploaded next week, but in the meantime
you can click - HERE
and HERE
- to see the complete Passenger List
Just scroll down until you see the name Meers ... and James is
listed as a shepherd
Not a huge 'breakthrough' ... but it's a start ... and every
little bit helps !!
Speak again soon ... Geoff
From Geoff ... Thursday 18th November 2010
The Very Elusive Mr Daniel Meers !!
Hi once again, Margaret
Firstly, this email is also being sent to Mary Fahey, who is
a Member of the Hallett Historical Society
I have had a long telephone talk with Mary, and she offered to
try and help us out
Following our conversation, I sent an email to Mary and she is
going to take this to the Society's next meeting towards the
end of this month
In this I mentioned that we were searching for information on
James and Louisa Meers and also James' father Daniel
Maybe someone at the meeting will have some records or memories
that will point us in the right direction !!
Mary also offered to take photos of the Meers' home in Hallett,
plus shots of Uncle Jim's garage which is still standing - CLICK
HERE
Thank you again, Mary, and I look forward to hearing from you
after the meeting
In the meantime I have been searching ... and searching ... and
searching !! ... and I reckon I have looked a "a billion"
internet pages !!
Boy, I would give anything to find Daniel's birth certificate
... which hopefully includes both his father's and mother's names
!!
You mentioned both a Judith and a Johanna, and this is where
I have been concentrating
And as mentioned before, I found the ship that Judith and her
family arrived in, but I cannot find where she then had a son
named Daniel
Not much else to do except to keep looking ... and hoping that
someone may contact us with the breakthrough that would confirm
all our thoughts
Hey, there's got to be someone who knows !!
All the best to you both ... I'll contact again soon
Regards ... Geoff
From Margaret ... Sunday 21st November 2010
Geoff
I have a copy of Daniel's Birth Certificate here somewhere
It doesn't give his mother's name ... only his father, James
Daniels' Death Certificate says he was born at Dry Creek
Regards ... Marg
From Geoff ... Monday 22nd November 2010
Hi Margaret
Got to admit I had a bit of a chuckle over you saying "here
somewhere" !!
Funny, because that is how our records and information was ...
"somewhere" ... and it took days and days to get it
sorted out into some sort of system !!
If you come across the Birth and Death Certificates, would you
mind sending me a copy ?? ... would like them very much
Have not heard anything back from the Hallett Historical Society
yet, but I am hopeful
Mary Fahey sounds very knowledgable, and she knew of the Meers
Family including Daniel
I am really looking forward to hearing back from her after the
meeting with the other Society members
Might be the "breakthrough" we are looking for !! ...
Who was James' wife !!
And I'll immediately pass on any details to you
Have a nice week
Regards ... Geoff
From Geoff ... Saturday 11th December 2010
Hi Margaret
I have just sent you a copy of an email that I wrote to the Hallett
History Group (below)
Here's hoping we are able to get some "new-and-exciting"
information !!
Just wondering if you have come across the Birth and Death Certificates
mentioned in the notes above
Have a nice weekend ... Geoff

The Meers Family in Hallett
Hi again, Mary ... and also to you Margaret
Mary, in your note below you mentioned the November Meeting of
the Hallett History Group
This note is just to see if we were lucky enough to have someone
attend the meeting who knew all about the Meers Family !!
James John and Louisa Mary, and James' father Daniel, and the
name of Daniel's wife !! ... and any other information about
them
Also have you had the time to snap the "big" photos
in and around the old Meers home in Hallett ?? ... plus any shots
of my Uncle Jim's garage ?? - CLICK
HERE
I am guessing that my original email from the 29th October was
tabled at the Meeting
Please remember that your Members can copy and use anything from
my site, and also don't forget that I would like to make the
$150.00 donation to the Group but I need the Bank Name, BSB Number
and Account Number
We will appreciate anything that you can send ... and look forward
to hearing back from you
Regards ... Geoff
From Geoff ... Thursday 30th June 2011
And HELLO once again to you all !!
Yes, it has been a while ... but I've got a good excuse !!
As well as doing this particular Family History, I am also researching
my Dad's side as well, plus also my darling wife's Dad and Mum's
family histories as well ... and this is where the time has been
spent
When you look at the Index Page for the Meers History below,
you will see that it is divided into fourteen sections ... Sharon's
Dad's name is Coudrey and if you check that albumn - HERE
- you'll see fifty-eight sections, yes, that's 58 !! ... and
it goes all the way back to the 1500's ... and that's over five
hundred years ago !!
A massive amount of research over a long period of time ... please
accept my excuse !!
Maybe one day we can get the Meers History back this far as well
!!
Righto, let's get going
You've probably noticed that this is a very long email ... and
it is !!
Lots of details along with over thirty links to click on
These include all the updates I've received along with the new
information I have been sent and that I've recently found
But first, a few "Thank You's"
The Entire Fahey Family ... who live in Hallett and are members
of the Historical Society
I've said it before but I'll say it again ... what a fantastic
parcel that was to receive !! ... terrific information and photos
!!
Still a bit more to do, but you'll see a lot of it included in
the links below ... everytime I look at it, I want to buy the
Meers' Home in Hallett !!
Margaret McDonald ... daughter of Daniel Joseph and Kathleen
Mary Meers (nee Victory)
Really appreciated the information on James and Judith Meers
And the terrific photo of Daniel !!
If you ever find the copies of his Birth and Death Certificates,
please, please send me a copy !!
Bianca Rowland ... grand-daughter of James Vincent and Margaret
Meers
No, I hadn't forgotten nor was I ignoring you !!
Thanks for your photo ... and you'll see it below
Also you'll come across a shot of your great-grand-mother with
your grand-parents which was taken on their Wedding Day
Plus, you'll see photos of the family home and the garage where
your grand-father worked
And another plus ... there are contact details for Milda Fahey,
who went to Primary School with your Dad !!
I hope you all enjoy looking through all this Family History
As usual, if I've made any mistakes or wrong assunptions, please
let me know ... it is difficult to put all this together, and
I really want it to be as accurate as possible
If you have anything new on our family tree, please also send
that so it can be included on this site
Finally, there is a question right at the end of this note ...
hope someone has the answer !!
Regards ... and hope to hear from you soon ... Geoff

QUESTION ... The Farm known as ... "Shannonside"
Can anyone help out with these newspaper articles ??
There are three notices below, referring to the farm known as
'Shannonside'
Does anyone know of this farm ??
And who is this particular "James John Meers" ??
If he is from "James + Judith", he would have been
around one-hundred-and-ten years old when these notices were
placed !!
And the James from "James + Louisa" did not die until
1967
And who might the "Mrs Mary Meers" that is mentioned
be ?? ...... Daniel's wife maybe ??
Is this the same property sold by Daniel Meers' estate back in
1922 and listed above ??
I've got a blank spot ... just cannot work it out !!

Hello Geoff
I'm having a "Celebrate the date ... 11/11/11" here
at home (it is also my birthday but that's not the reason) and
I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a Meers family
get-together that weekend
I have contacted Daniel who is keen, Judy Brookman will be overseas
... most of my lot will be here anyhow
Birregurra is about two hours from Melbourne airport
If there are any cheap airfares would it be a consideration ??
Accomodation is available in nearby Colac, motels and parks,
which is about twenty minutes away
Locally there are share houses and bed-and-breakfasts
For the tourist we're close to Lorne and the Great Ocean Road
The volcanic plains are rather special too and the Birregurra.com
website has information
We have a popular festival in October so that's taking up the
time right now for most of us
Would love to hear from you

Hi Geoff
Spoke to Margaret Meers sometime ago ... she knows nothing about

Nana Meers most probably purchased Grandpa's house (bankrupt)
with money from the Beerworth's
I don't know for sure, but Mum always referred to the Halley
house as Mum's, and house in St Marys as Mum's even though Grandpa
there
He always shared a bedroom with Bill for as long as I can remember

From Geoff ... Thursday 28th June 2012
Hi Judy ... and to you too, Margaret
This Family History research takes time ... lots and lots of
time !!
I have recently been working on Sharon's side of the family ...
have had a lot of success and have been able to trace her Dad's
ancestors (Coudrey) all the way back to the early 1500's !! ...
have a look - HERE
Now it's back to The Roneberg and Meers Histories for the next
few months
#01 - Shannonside
Just below there are a couple of articles from The Burra Record
... dated 2nd March 1927
I reckon that these "confirm" that the farm was definately
known by that name ... and do you agree with that assumption
??
Naturally I don't like to upload anything unless I am almost
100% sure it is correct !!
#02 - Nana and Grandpa Meers
I am not sure what your note above means and would you mind explaining
it a little bit more for me
I guess "Halley" is meant to be "Hallett"
#03 - John and Kate Dann
I have left a message for Kate on her Facebook Page ... sometimes
these are missed, and if I don't hear back from her, I will give
a ring over the weekend
I'll also give John a call
#04 - Upcoming Research
Daniel and Mary Meers (nee McCabe) ... see Section #07 on THIS
page
Starting now, I am going to try to finalise the details on this
couple
BUT ... I also want to discover more information on their parents
as below
James and Judith Meers (nee ???) ... see Section #10 on THIS
page
and
John and Ellen McCabe (nee Frost) ... see Section #09 on THIS
page
Have you any information and details that may help ??
#05 - Photos and Certificates
Hey, do you have any 'old' photos of our Family ?? .... or any
birth, wedding or death certificates ??
I would really appreciate a copy of anything you may have ...
anything at all !!
I have no idea how computer-savy you are, but if you scan anything,
would you do it at a minimum of 600dpi as this makes an image
that is perfect to be uploaded to the internet ... the files
are a bit big when sending attached to an email, but that does
not really matter at all
As an alternative, you could send everything up to here via registered
post and I would do the scans and return it to you ... guaranteed
!!
That's about it for now ... and here are the Shannonside articles
mentioned above ... bye, Geoff
