A note from Geoff on Thursday 2nd February 2006

it was time to replace our 'plastic' wall clock!!!
This one is more 'to the theme' of our lounge room"

- The Ebay Auction

Emes Ceramic Kitchen Wall Clock
Nice Emes kitchen wall clock in good working condition
This clock has the original key
There are some tiny chips around the key hole - they are only tiny!!
The clock stands 20cm high and 24cm wide
It has the numbers "4070" embossed on the back
as well as the numbers "51/13/7" printed on the back

A note I sent to the seller during the auction
Hi ya
In your description you mention that the wall clock is in good working condition
Do you have any idea how long it goes for with a full wind???
And I presume there is a hook built in on the back???
Thank you, Geoff
......and the reply
Hi Geoff
Thanks for your interest in my item
The clock has a metal ring on the back so it can be hung on the wall - it is the original one
I have not wound the clock fully but I did give it a few turns
and it was still going from 9.00pm till 9.00am the next morning
And it kept the correct time
I am not sure how long it would go on a full wind maybe 5 to 7 days?
Regards, Chris

Item location - South Australia Australia
This auction ended on Tuesday 31st January 2006

Hello and firstly, I am not looking for a valuation - the clocks listed below are from our familys and are not for sale at all!!

We have three clocks in our home ---
(01) Badische Uhrenfabrik A G (key-wind) Carriage Clock
(02) Smiths - Enfield (key-wind) Mantel Clock, and
(03) Emes Ceramic Kitchen (key-wind) Wall Clock

From various places on the internet, I have been able to find out a bit of info on the first two, but I cannot discover anything on the Emes clock
I would like to know where it was made, approx date, and that sort of info

I have a number of photos of the clock face plus photos of the markings and numbers on the back
I did not want to presume anything by sending them to you unasked!!
If you can offer us a bit of assistance, please write back and I will forward them to you immediately

I enjoyed looking around your site

I am not a "clock expert" in any way - the above three clocks came to myself and my wife after the deaths of our parents and I am just interested in their history

Hope to hear from you
Geoff

......and the reply

Geoff
Emes was a German maker and the European Trademark book by Kochmann, my "bible" for this sort of thing, records them as follows

Schwenningen/Neckar
Germany
Emes, tradename enterprise, timepieces
operated under the name "Mueller Schlenker"
founded 1879
especially maker of movements for the instrument industry
also pocket and wrist watches
later maker of automobile clocks
1960 expanded production facilities
last data records Emes electronic

Don't ask me what all that means!!

Sounds as if they were in business for quite some time but I don't think they are well known in the UK

Regards
Barrie

......and a 'thank-you' note

Our EMES wall clock

Hi Barrie, and appreciate you taking the time to answer

"Don't ask me what all that means"
Hey, that's funny!!!
Boy, if you can't understand it, what about me!!

Wouldn't it be nice if all the manufacturers "from years past" kept a nice and easy to understand list of what they made, when it was made, etc!!
Oh well, it's 'sorta-like-fun' trying to find it all out - but frustrating as well!!

Have a nice day/night (???) over there

Regards, and thanks again
Geoff

Other--Auctions for similar clocks

......for price comparisons!!!

***********************************************

Auction #01

A note from Geoff on Friday 30th June 2006
This clock has a very similar look to the one we bought

The main difference is along the bottom where ours is a type of scroll
and this one has a straight edge

It is interesting to note that Barrie at The Clock Museum wrote
that our Emes clock was made by Mueller Schlenker
and that the clock below is made by Schlenker Sohne

Schlenker is included in both of them!!
Why is that so, I wonder??
***********************************

Schlenker Sohne Ceramic Wall Clock
This clock is in great condition
It came from relatives who have passed away
I don't know the age of this or it's origins
It is marked 'Made in Germany' on the front
The ceramic enamel is perfect with no chips or scratches
The clock arms are metal
The mechanisms are in good condition,
although I don't have a clock key so I haven't tested it for a good while
It did keep good time
There is a serial number/make number on the back '3239' in the ceramic so it possibly
could be a limited edition or something like that but I could not verify that
It is very antique looking and would suit a colonial kitchen setting
or for anyone wanting that old-world feel that a tick-tock/chime-clock brings!!
Item location - Melbourne, Victoria Australia
This auction ended on Friday 30th June 2006
The starting price was set at $45.00
There were no bids

Auction #02

A note from Geoff on Monday 14th August 2006
This clock looks to be the same as the clock above in Auction #01

It is made by the same maker
but the one below does not have the red strip along the bottom
and only the numbers '3-6-9-12' are shown on the clock face

Art Deco Ceramic Wall Clock

Key wind!! - Just gorgeous!!
Rare type!! - Beautiful item!! - Hard to find!!
Would have to be one of the best pieces I have seen!!
Also, there is no doubt that this is 'the real McCoy'
A genuine family piece in great working condition for it's age
An excellent display item!!
Amazing style!! - Desirable item!!
There are no chips or cracks
You wont find one much better!!
These are hard to find
and are being snapped up by keen collectors all over the place
This piece will not disappoint!!
Measures 22cm wide
Item location - Mid Coast, NSW Australia
This auction ended on Saturday 12th August 2006
The starting price was set at $5.00 and there were sixteen bids during the auction
The final selling price was $37.50

Auction #03

A note from Geoff on Thursday 17th August 2006
Another clock that has a similar sort of design

This is from another different manufacturer
and it looks like these types of clocks proved popular
and a lot of makers released their own versions

So far, ours is the only one with the 'scrolled bottom'
......and I think it looks the best!!!
*****************************************************

'Peter' Ceramic Wall Clock
Art Deco - circa 1930's - with the key
This is an original c1930’s art deco ceramic wall that was made by Peter in Germany
The face is made of china with a nice glossy cream and red striped glaze
The numbers are black as are the metal fingers
It’s a mechanical wind-up movement
and you wind the clock from the middle of the face with the key
On the back its nicely stamped Made in Germany and the numbers 9605 and 3248
The clock movement cover is made of metal with the original cream paint finish
It’s working very well and keeping nice time with a good strong tick-tock
Overall the item is very nice with no cracks or crazing on the ceramic face
It does have a couple of little fleabites
that do not detract from this good quality and desirable vintage item
Measures 22cm by 19cm
Item location - Adelaide Hills, Australia
This auction ended on Thursday 17th August 2006
The starting price was set at $15.00 and there were thirteen bids during the auction
The final selling price was $77.00
