Quake off East Timor leaves Darwin shaking

AN earthquake off East Timor's coast has left furniture and books
shaking in Darwin, with aftershocks expected over the next few days

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck just after 9.20pm (CST)
on Sunday in the Banda Sea northeast of East Timor

It was felt shortly afterwards in Darwin - about 500km away

"We certainly felt things," Senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology
in Darwin Steph Bond told AAP

"It went for quite a length of time, around 30 seconds
We had books moving"

Senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia, Jonathan Bathgate said the
epicentre of the quake, which was around 115km under the sea floor, was
also felt in Queensland and as far south as Katherine in the Northern Territory

"Most have reported shaking for 15 to 30 seconds," he said

Depending on people's location, some reported seeing hanging objects
swinging, while others witnessed furniture, such as beds and chairs moving

Aftershocks as strong as magnitude 5.0
may be felt in Darwin over the next few days or hours

"This event in itself is not unusual for the area and is certainly
something that Darwin residents are relatively used to"

Ms Bond said there was not tsunami threat to the
Australian mainland, island or territories from the quake
