Water levels are expected to reach 3.8m in some low-lying areas, the Bruce Hwy has been shut in several places and city streets have been turned into rivers
Many workers have been stranded at home and some people reported taking more than an hour to drive 5km to work as police and emergency services diverted motorists past the worst-hit areas
An Emergency Management Queensland spokeswoman said about 100 homes had been inundated by rain and tides, despite sandbagging on Sunday night

In Manunda and Manoora, residents reported knee-deep water under houses and in Edmonton, wheelie bins floated down the streets as water inundated the area

Yorkeys Knob resident Simone Roseler said residents were bracing for what would happen with the king tide, and more rain expected later today and into the night
"This morning our street was like one big, flowing river and we were scared our car was going to float away" Ms Roseler said "And the cane fields look like lakes"
She said her suburb, about 15km north of Cairns’ CBD, was cut off by water

Other northern beaches suburbs have also been cut off while Port Douglas is also reported to have been hit by flash flooding

On the Cairns Esplanade, the high tide has washed away up to 1m of foreshore, several Casuarina trees and turf
The popular Esplanade lagoon has so far suffered no damage

In parts of the CBD and near the Cairns showgrounds, business owners face massive clean-ups after water inundated their shops and businesses
Some reported water up to 70cm deep washing through buildings
