4) What is the greatest advice you have received during your career?
Relax – you do know this is not really going to kill you!!

5) List two achievements that you have personally accomplished within your company or division (eg growth strategy, grew staff, turnover increase 50%)
I employed a courier driver who I thought could have a great future with Australia Post. Unfortunately due to circumstances she had to leave. After two years I was able to employ her again and she is now in our development group. She has grasped the opportunities offered to her and has proved herself to be a great asset to Australia Post. I am delighted I was able to recognise her abilities and woo her back to Australia Post.

About four years ago I wanted to improve the way we maintained our courier run information. Our drivers runs were written by their supervisor in a book. I spoke to other Business Centre Managers who all had their own way of keeping track. I talked to our drivers and retail staff and we wrote down what we needed on a run sheet to allow a person who came off the street to complete the run.
We needed names, account numbers, post office box numbers, phone numbers, times for collection and delivery, directions and access instructions. The retail staff needed information as well because they handle the data input.
We set up a data base with all the information. It can be changed easily when required. The run sheets are printed out for the drivers and we have a copy for the office. Everyone knows where everyone should be at any given time. The list can also be printed out alphabetically and it has made a big difference to us.
Information is easily accessible, properly maintained and relief managers and staff can find information they require quickly.
I have presented it to visiting senior personnel from Australia Post and notified our “innovation people” to show other Business Centre managers.

6) What do you see as the greatest challenge for women in business in our region?
The most qualified person, whatever gender should move forward in any business.
Of the ten corporate post offices in our NQ region there are five male managers and five female managers and they have been promoted on merit. In articles I have read on the subject of women in business there are varying opinions on causes of inequality. One good piece of advice I read is for woman to learn salary negotiation skills to ensure they do not miss out on being rewarded fairly for the job they secure.

7) What / who did you want to be when you 'grew up' and why?
I wanted to be a geologist because my parents collected all manner of gemstones and cut and polished them. I wanted to dig them out of the ground in the Flinders Ranges where we went camping. My parents showed me how to spit on them to see the beautiful colors!
I also wanted to be Miss Australia. I was feeling very unhappy about the new coke bottle glasses I began wearing when I was nine and my Dad told me that by the time I was grown up Miss Australias would have glasses so there was no need to worry.

8) What do you think will be your legacy as as business owner / manager / leader?
I want to be remembered as a manager who gave her staff the opportunity to think for themselves, took on board their ideas and suggestions, made them feel that their contribution was important and that we are an integral part of what is a very large corporation.
I want to be remembered by our business customers as being a knowledgeable, reliable person who they trusted to help them with their business needs.
