The United States defeated Cuba 6-3 Sunday
to win the Baseball World Cup for the first time since 1974 and
end a series of nine successive title wins by the Cubans
The other results are:
----------Japan - third
----------Netherlands - fourth
----------South Korea - fifth
----------Australia - sixth
----------Mexico - seventh
----------Taiwan - eighth
Panama, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Canada, Venezuela, Germany
and Thailand were eliminated after the preliminaries
It was the first US victory over Cuba in a World Cup game and
their third Gold since the tournament began in 1938
Record winner Cuba had won 12 of the last 13 World Cups and were
going for a 26th title in total at the 37th edition of the tournament
Cuba were absent from the 1973 and 1974 World Cup games in which
the US won Gold
The US, determined to reassert its reputation as the baseball
nation of the world, had sent a strong team to the tournament,
with players coming from both the major and minor leagues
