The Curve will wrap up their
ninth season today, and the players dont know yet if theyll
have a short day or a long one before heading home
A doubleheader against Erie is scheduled for 1.05pm, but the second
game will be played only if it has an impact on the playoff race
If the SeaWolves win the first game, the second will not be played
The Curve, though, have some motivation to play two today since
they can spoil things for Erie in the Southern Division race
The SeaWolves lead second-place Akron by half a game, and though
both teams already have clinched a postseason berth, todays
results will determine the regular-season division champion
Erie can clinch the crown by winning game one
If the Curve win the opener, the second game still may be played
Akron will be playing at Binghamton at the same time
If the Aeros and Curve both win, Altoona and Erie will have to
play game two
There could be some intriguing overlap, though, because the Curve-Erie
game will go just seven innings, while Akron is playing nine
If the SeaWolves lose, theyll be doing some scoreboard watching
while also preparing for a possible second game
If Akron loses in the meantime, the second game will be canceled
If Erie and Akron somehow finish tied, the SeaWolves own the tiebreaker
over the Aeros and will be declared the division champions
The Result
Game One - SeaWolves
- 9 runs to 4
Game Two - Game Cancelled
The Curve - Year-to-Date
73 wins and 68
losses

Game Reports
Erie scored in each of the
first three innings and Jeff Larish added the exclamation point
as the SeaWolves blasted the Curve, 9-4, to claim the Eastern
League's Southern Division title
Already leading 4-2, the SeaWolves put the game away with five
runs in the sixth inning
Pat Bresnehan walked the first two batters of the inning and permitted
a single to Matt Joyce to load the bases before departing in favor
of Ronald Belisario
Belisario was greeted by Larish who belted a grand slam over the
wall in right field
The home run was Larish's 28th of the year and also helped him
eclipse the 100-RBI plateau
Hernandez also scored to cap Erie's scoring on a Will Rhymes sacrifice
fly
Erie's victory effectively ended the Curve's season as it eliminated
Akron from title contention and rendered a scheduled game two
irrelevent
Yoslan Herrera made the start and endured hard times early for
the Curve
The SeaWolves jumped on him immediately, scoring two runs in the
bottom of the first inning
With one out, Danny Worth singled to start the rally
Joyce followed with an RBI double to score Worth with the game's
first run
Larish singled to move Joyce to third, and he scored from there
on a passed ball charged to Brian Peterson
The Curve got a run back off of Erie starter Dallas Tahern in
the second as Javier Guzman singled home Jason Delaney
Erie got that run right back in the bottom of the inning however,
as Worth delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to score Rhymes
and give Erie a 3-1 advantage
Mike Hernandez made it 4-1 with a towering solo home run to right
field off of Herrera in the third inning
Peter Bergeron contributed an RBI single for the Curve in the
fifth inning, and the Curve scored their final runs of the year
in the seventh as Jason Bowers sent a massive two-run home run
to left field to cap the Altoona scoring
Trahern did not last long enough in the ballgame to qualify for
the win, and the victory instead went to reliever Matt Rusch
Rusch (6-1) turned in 1-1/3 scoreless innings to win for the sixth
time
Herrera (6-9) was tagged with the loss in his final start of the
year, permitting four runs on six hits over three innings
Erie will square off against the Akron Aeros in the Eastern League
Southern Divisional Series beginning on Wednesday at Jerry Uht
Park
The SeaWolves took down the
Altoona Curve on Monday afternoon by a score of 9-4 to win their
first Southern Division title since 2001!
The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the first inning against
Curve starter Yoslan Herrera
Danny Worth connected on an opposite field base hit with one out
bringing Matt Joyce to the plate
Joyce slammed a line drive double over the wall in center, scoring
Worth from first, giving Erie a 1-0 lead
A single by Jeff Larish put runners on the corners and a passed
ball scored Joyce from third for a 2-0 Erie advantage
The Curve responded in the top of the second
Jason Delaney doubled down the right field line with one out
With two outs, Javier Guzman singled to center, scoring Delaney,
making it 2-1 Wolves
Erie would go back up by a pair in the bottom of the second
Will Rhymes and Steve Torrealba singled to put two on for Nick
McIntyre
McIntyre laid down a bunt to move the runners over but Rhymes
beat Herreras throw to third to load the bases
With one out Worth hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Rhymes from third for a 3-1 Erie lead
Erie would go up by three runs in the bottom of the third inning
when Mike Hernandez stepped in and crushed an opposite field home
run, his fourth, for a 4-1 Wolves lead
Altoona cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning
Taber Lee walked and scored with one out on a Peter Bergeron single
to center, making it a 4-2 game in favor of Erie
The score would remain the same heading into the bottom of the
sixth inning
Patrick Bresnehan tossed two scoreless inning and the Curve sent
him back out to work the sixth
Bresnehan gave up back-to-back walks to Thomas and Worth and Joyce
singled to load the bases for Larish
Altoona went to the bullpen again and brought in RHP Ronald Belisario
Larish stood in and connected on a grand slam to put the Wolves
up 8-2
The home run for Larish was his 28th on the season, putting him
third all-time in SeaWolves history
Larish also finished the regular season with 101 RBI which is
one-shy on the all-time record of 102 set by Eric Munson in 2001
Later in the inning Hernandez would score on a Rhymes sacrifice
fly to put Erie ahead 9-2
Altoona would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning
against reliever Ian Ostlund but it would not be enough as Ostlund
retired the final three batters he faced to give Erie the 9-4
victory
Matt Rusch (6-1) picked up the win for Erie in his first day back
from the disabled list
Rusch retired all four batters he faced, including retiring the
side in the top of the sixth
