Game Reports

Josh Shortslef (pictured) was hoping to close his season with three consecutive victories,
but the Erie SeaWolves offense finally came alive
and the SeaWolves handed the Curve a 7-0 loss Sunday night at Jerry Uht Park in Erie

Shortslef roughed up in final start

The SeaWolves' offense finally came alive, as Erie pounded out 11 hits and won for the first time in the series, 7-0

Erie starter Andrew Kown was spectacular for the SeaWolves, shutting out the Curve for eight innings and allowing just three hits
Kown (6-8) walked just one and struck out four

After Kown held the Curve scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series, Erie took their first lead in the second
Jeff Larish led off the inning with a single off of Curve starter Josh Shortslef
Nick Trzesniak followed with a double, and Larish scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Joyce

Erie broke the game open with four runs in the third inning
Wilkin Ramirez and Nick McIntyre led off the inning with back-to-back singles
Clete Thomas followed with an attempted sacrifice bunt that Shortslef threw errantly attempting to cut down Ramirez at third base, loading the bases
Danny Worth followed with a bases-clearing triple and a 4-0 Erie lead
Worth scored to make it 5-0 on an ensuing Mike Hernandez sacrifice fly to center field

Shortlsef surrendered a lone run in each of the fourth and sixth innings
In the fourth, Thomas delivered an RBI single and in the sixth, Hernandez contributed his second sacrifice fly of the ballgame

Shortlsef (5-13) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs -six earned - over six innings
The left-hander, making his final start of the season, gave up 11 hits and struck out two

The series will conclude on Monday at Jerry Uht Park
The two teams will play a doubleheader (If Necessary) beginning at 1.05pm
RHP Yoslan Herrera (6-8, 4.58) will make his final start of the season for the Curve in game one against RHP Dallas Trahern (12-6, 3.87) for Erie

Andrew Kown throws eight scoreless innings in SeaWolves victory

'Magic Number' down to one as Kown tosses gem

The SeaWolves ended a four-game losing skid behind a masterful performance by Andrew Kown en route to a 7-0 shutout win over the Altoona Curve on Sunday night at Jerry Uht Park

The win puts Erie’s magic number at one to clinch the Southern Division

The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the second inning
Jeff Larish led off with a single and Nick Trzesniak doubled to put runners on second and third for Matt Joyce
Joyce connected on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Larish from third, giving Erie a 1-0 lead

It was the first lead for the ‘Wolves in five games

Erie added to the lead in the bottom of the third
Wilkin Ramirez and Nick McIntyre led off the inning with back-to-back singles
Clete Thomas laid down a bunt and on an errant throw by Josh Shortslef, the bases were loaded for Danny Worth
Worth stepped in and connected on an opposite field, bases clearing triple down the right field line to give the ‘Wolves a 4-0 advantage
Worth would score on a sacrifice fly by Mike Hernandez for a 5-0 Erie lead

The ‘Wolves would take a 6-0 lead as they scored in the third straight inning in the bottom of the fourth
Joyce led off with a single and moved over to third on a Wilkin Ramirez single to right
Thomas then followed with an RBI single for the sixth Erie run of the game

Erie added a seventh and final run in the bottom of the sixth
McIntyre led off with a double for his second hit of the game
He moved over to third on Thomas’ second hit of the game and with one out, Hernandez picked up his second RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field giving Erie a 7-0 lead

The seven runs would prove to be more than enough for Kown who threw eight scoreless innings allowing just three hits with a walk and four strikeouts
Kown improved to 6-8 on the season and is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three starts
The eight innings marked the deepest Kown has worked in a ballgame since throwing a complete game on July 12 against Bowie
It also marked the third straight game in which Kown pitched passed the seventh inning

Alan Mills pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation

The game ended on an amazing diving play by McIntyre at third to throw out Brad Corley for the final out

The shutout tossed by the ‘Wolves pitching staff was their seventh of the season

The SeaWolves and Curve wrap up the regular season on Monday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park - 1.05pm first pitch

Akron was victorious on Sunday night in Binghamton by a score of 6-3

Monday’s game is schedule as a doubleheader with the following scenarios:-
(1) If the SeaWolves win game one (a seven inning game) they clinch the Southern Division and game two would not be played
(2) If the SeaWolves lose game one and Akron wins their game against Binghamton - the SeaWolves and Curve would play the second seven inning game on Monday
(3) If the SeaWolves lose and the Aeros lose, Erie clinches the Southern Division and a second game would not be played
