Game Reports
Game One
Luis Munoz completed an outstanding season with his 12th victory
as the Curve continued their mastery of the Erie SeaWolves with
a 6-2 win in game one
Munoz (12-5) struck out eight in the win, permitting just two
unearned runs on six hits over 6-2/3 innings
The SeaWolves have scored no earned runs in the first three games
of the series
Matt Peterson made sure of that, striking out Will Rhymes to end
the ballgame and record his franchise-record 29th save of the
season
Meanwhile, Altoona recorded a home run in the first inning for
the third straight game, as Vic Buttler delivered a solo shot
off of Erie starter Jon Connolly to give the Curve a 1-0 lead
Buttler got the Curve
started again in the third, lifting a pop fly to shallow center
field that was misplayed into a double by the SeaWolves
That opened the door for Brett Roneberg, who promptly belted the
first pitch from Connolly out to right field for a 3-0 Curve lead
Erie got on the scoreboard for the first time in the series in
the third
A Taber Lee error fueled a two-run rally that culminated in a
two-run double by Matt Joyce to pull Erie within a run at 3-2
They got no closer as Munoz settled in and the Curve offense put
it away in the fifth
After Lee singled to start the inning off of Connolly, Jason Bowers
doubled to the left field corner to put runners at second and
third
The hits led to Connolly's undoing as he walked three out of the
next four batters to plate two runs
Both Roneberg and Jason
Delaney walked with the bases loaded to collect RBIs as the Curve
went ahead, 5-2
Altoona added an unearned run off of reliever Danny Zell in the
sixth to cap the scoring
Connolly (7-7) was charged with seven hits and five earned runs
as his record dropped back to the .500 mark on the year
Game Two
Dominant starting pitching continued to be the theme as Kyle Bloom
threw five scoreless innings as the Curve won, 4-1, to sweep a
doubleheader from the SeaWolves for a second straight night
The Curve scored in the first inning for the fourth consecutive
ballgame to stake Bloom to an early lead
Jason Bowers led off the ballgame with a single off of Erie starter
Randor Bierd
Vic Buttler sacrificed Bowers to second and Brett Roneberg put runners on the corners with a single
Brad Corley followed with a double to score both runners, and
the Curve led 2-0
With Bloom cruising, the Curve added two more in the third inning
to lead 4-0
The rally came with
two outs, as Bierd walked Roneberg to get Altoona started
Corley delivered a second RBI double to plate Roneberg and scored on a Jason Delaney single
for a four-run Altoona lead
Bloom (1-1) won for the first time at the double-A level, permitting
just three hits over five innings and striking out two
Erie scored their first earned run of the series after 26 innings
of futility when Jeff Larish clubbed his league-leading 27th home
run off of Curve reliever Ronald Belisario to lead off the sixth
inning
Belisario recovered to close out the ballgame as the Curve won
their fourth straight over the first place SeaWolves
Bierd (3-2) was hit with the loss after allowing four earned runs
over three innings
The series will continue with a single game on Sunday night at
6.05pm
LHP Josh Shortslef (5-12, 4.21) will make his final start of the
year for Altoona against RHP Andrew Kown (5-8, 4.42) for Erie
The Curve will be able to call
themselves winners once again this season, and theyre getting
a chance to play the spoiler role in the playoff race
Altoona pulled off a second consecutive doubleheader sweep against
Erie on Saturday night and assured itself of a winning season
The Curve, after 6-2 and 4-1 victories, improved to 73-66 with
just three games remaining
This marks the sixth consecutive year the Curve will enjoy a winning
season
In the franchises nine years, only twice - 1999 and 2001
- has it failed to finish above .500
The scenario is playing out this weekend just like the Curve hoped
it would as theyve gone to Erie and made a statement with
four wins in two days
Problem is, Altoona was hoping to still have a playoff berth to
compete for in this season-ending seven-game series, but the club
already has been eliminated from postseason contention
The Curve will still have a lot to do with the playoffs, though,
as theyre trying to spoil Eries chances of winning
the Southern Division regular-season title
The back-to-back doubleheader losses have dropped the SeaWolves
lead to just half a game over second-place Akron
The Aeros have been the Curves biggest rival for years,
but now Altoona has a chance to help out its nemesis if it can
continue to beat Erie
The Curve won the opener
Saturday behind homers from Vic Buttler and Brett Roneberg
Luis Munoz (12-5) gave up two runs - none earned - in 6-2/3 innings,
and Matt Peterson finished it off for his 29th save
Jon Connolly (7-7) took the loss
Brad Corley went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game
Kyle Bloom (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings for the win, while
Randor Bierd (3-2) took the loss
Luis Munoz came within an out
of his second complete game of the season as visiting Altoona
dropped Erie, 6-2, in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader
Munoz (12-5) allowed two unearned runs on six hits and a walk
with eight strikeouts in 6-2/3 innings to lower his ERA to 3.63
The 25-year-old right-hander pitched seven shutout frames in his
last outing on Monday and also tossed a five-hitter against Trenton
on June 28
Matt Peterson struck out Will Rhymes for his Eastern League-leading

a two-run homer, his eighth, in the third and drew a bases-loaded
walk in the fifth for the Curve (71-66), who also got a solo shot from Vic Buttler
Matt Joyce lined a two-run double in the third for the SeaWolves
(79-57)
Erie starter Jonathan Connolly (7-7) lost for the first time since
Aug 10 after surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks
with seven strikeouts over five innings
Kyle Bloom hurled five scoreless
innings and Brad Corley drove in three runs as Altoona dropped
Erie, 4-1, to sweep Saturday's doubleheader
Bloom (1-1) struck out three, walked four and limited the SeaWolves
(79-59) to three hits for his first Double-A win
The 24-year-old left-hander went 9-12 with a 5.51 ERA in 25 starts
for Class A Advanced Lynchburg

Southern Division title

Vic Butler reached on double to that fell into shallow left field
to keep the inning alive with two outs

Roneberg slammed his eighth home run of the season to put the

The home run for Roneberg was his second of the series

a streak of 21-striaght scoreless innings

was sacrifice over to second by Vic Butler

against starter Randor Bierd
The Curve would take a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning
With two outs, Bierd
walked Roneberg
Corley followed with a double, his second, scoring Roneberg for
a 3-0 lead
Jason Delaney then singled home Corley for the fourth run of the

The SeaWolves and Curve meet on Sunday night at Jerry Uht Park

On Friday, the playoff-bound,
first-place SeaWolves held a four-game lead over second-place
Akron and looked like a sure bet to win the Eastern League Southern
Division title
Now, after losing back-to-back home doubleheaders to the Altoona
Curve, the SeaWolves (79-59) find themselves clinging to a very
tenuous half-game lead over Akron (79-60)
Altoona defeated Erie 6-2 and 4-1 in Saturday's doubleheader before
a crowd of 5,755 at Jerry Uht Park, while Akron swept a doubleheader
at Binghamton, winning 2-1 and 6-3
Akron had made up 3-1/2 games in the standings in the past two
days
"The guys are pressing and that's hurt their confidence"
Walbeck said of his club
"They're not winning and they're used to winning
That's what happens when you go through a funk like this
You have no confidence, you start to press, you start to doubt
yourself
That's normal
It's my job to right the ship and tell them everything is OK
They have nothing to be ashamed of"
Erie entered its seven-game weekend home series against the Curve
with a four-game lead over Akron
Erie's problems surfaced in a doubleheader loss to Altoona on
Friday, when they saw their lead drop from four games to 2-1/2
after Akron's victory at Binghamton
"The bottom line is we're going to the playoffs" Walbeck
said
"Regardless if we win the division or make the wild card,
we've had a fantastic year with great turnover in personnel"
In their two weekend doubleheaders, the SeaWolves offense has
been listless, their situational hitting nearly non-existent,
and their pitching has given Altoona early leads in every game
"You don't like to push the ball uphill and give up runs
in the first" SeaWolves pitching coach A.J. Sager said
"You're playing from behind the whole game"
In Saturday's opener, Curve right-hander Luis Munoz worked 6-2/3
innings, allowing six hits and two runs
Right-hander Matt Peterson recorded the final out for his league-leading
29th save
The Curve built a 4-0 lead in the first three innings of the second
game
Curve starter Kyle Bloom and reliever Ronald Belisario combined
on a five-hitter in the second game
Erie's lone run came on a sixth-inning homer from first baseman
Jeff Larish
The SeaWolves have scored three runs in their past 33 innings
Erie also received a jolt when their team captain, Eastern League
second baseman Michael Hollimon, was promoted to Triple-A Toledo
on Thursday
"With the loss of Hollimon, that does something" Walbeck
said
"He brings more to the table than just average, homers and
RBIs
He has a certain spirit that is hard to replace
When you lose a guy who has been around so long and a mental edge
for you, it takes some adjustment"
Erie clinched a playoff berth earlier in the week, and will meet
Akron in their best-of-five Southern Division playoff series beginning
Wednesday
Notes
Erie and Altoona continue their seven-game series Sunday at 6.05pm
at Uht Park

face Altoona lefty Josh Shortslef (5-12, 4.21)
The teams are scheduled to play a 1.05pm doubleheader Monday,
the final day of the regular season - however, if the SeaWolves
