Game Reports

Dewon Brazelton (pictured) turned in a complete game masterpiece,
as the Curve shut out the Erie SeaWolves in game one of a doubleheader, 6-0,
and a trio of Curve pitchers stifled the SeaWolves in a 3-0 game two win

Curve shutout SeaWolves in doubleheader sweep

Game One

The Curve accumulated just two hits in game one, but got maximum value in a 6-0 win over the Erie SeaWolves from Jerry Uht Park

The Curve played as the home team in game one as the game was officially the continuation of a game suspended at Blair County Ballpark on August 19th

Batting in the bottom of the first inning, Altoona took a lead they never surrendered
After Erie starter Jeff Gerbe walked Peter Bergeron with one out, Brett Roneberg rocketed a first-pitch fastball off the scoreboard in right field
The two-run home run gave the Curve a 2-0 lead

The two runs were more than enough for Dewon Brazelton
Brazelton (5-5) was tremendous, going the distance to earn the win
In his final start of the season, the right-hander shut out the SeaWolves for seven innings allowing just three hits, while striking out five
The complete game was Brazelton's third in 15 starts with the Curve

For the most part, Gerbe was terriffic as well for the SeaWolves
He eventually conceded six runs - four earned - in six innings, but at one point retired 14 straight Curve hitters

Jeff Gerbe (0-1) did issue five walks to drop his first double-A decision

Three of those walks came in the bottom of the sixth, as the Curve blew the ballgame open with four runs
Gerbe walked Jason Bowers to lead off the inning, and after Bergeron bunted him to second, the SeaWolves elected to intentionally walk Roneberg
A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third at which point Erie intentionally passed Adam Boeve to load the bases
Brad Corley followed with a ground ball that shot through the legs of third baseman Kody Kirkland and scored two runs
Jason Delaney followed with a two-run single to cap the scoring at 6-0

Game Two

The Curve took a perfect game bid into the seventh inning, and ultimately settled for a second straight shutout win and a doubleheader sweep, beating Erie in game two, 3-0

Wardell Starling made the start for the Curve and turned in four perfect innings
Starling struck out two in retiring all 12 batters that he faced
Starling departed after the fourth however, and was inelegible for the win

The win instead went to Pat Bresnehan
Bresnehan (1-0) came on in the fifth and picked up where Starling left off, dispatching all of the six SeaWolves he faced in order
Bresnehan struck out two in carrying the game into the seventh

Curve closer Matt Peterson came on for the seventh with a shot at two historic accomplishments

He achieved one of the two, recording a scoreless inning and a franchise-record 28th save
That mark eclipses the previous record of 27 established by Brandon Knight in 2006

However, Peterson did walk Clete Thomas to lead off the inning, breaking up the perfect game bid, and permitted an infield-single to Will Rhymes to eliminate the no-hit bid

The Curve got all the offense they needed in the first inning
Jason Bowers led off the ballgame with a solo home run to left field off of Erie starter Corey Hamman to give Altoona a 1-0 lead
A batter later, Brad Corley singled back up the middle and scored ahead of Adam Boeve, who blasted a two-run homer to dead center field
Boeve's team-leading 17th home run of the season gave the Curve a 3-0 lead

The season-ending series will continue with a second straight doubleheader on Saturday night
Game one will begin at 5.05pm with RHP Luis Munoz (11-5, 3.82) starting for Altoona against LHP Jon Connolly (7-6, 4.37) for the SeaWolves
LHP Kyle Bloom (0-1, 1.50) will make a spot-start in game two for the Curve against RHP Randor Bierd (3-1, 2.74) for Erie

Nick Trzesniak had one of the five hits for Erie in the doubleheader

SeaWolves swept in doubleheader

The Altoona Curve shutout the SeaWolves en route to a doubleheader sweep on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park
The two losses keeps Erie’s magic number for clinching the Southern Division at three

Game One

In game one, Altoona would be the home team because of a previous rainout at Blair County Ballpark

The Curve got ahead in the bottom of the first inning against starter Jeff Gerbe
Peter Bergeron walked with one out and Brett Roneberg stepped in and connected on his seventh home run of the season to put Altoona ahead 2-0

Gerbe would go on to retire 14 consecutive batters in the game until the bottom of the sixth inning

In the bottom of the sixth, Gerbe issued a leadoff walk to Jason Bowers
Peter Bergeron sacrificed Bowers over to second
Brett Roneberg drew an intentional pass to set up a potential double play but that strategy backfired as a passed ball allowed both runners to advanced, forcing the ‘Wolves to intentionally walk Adam Boeve to load the bases with one out
Brad Corley stepped in and sent a ground ball to third that was misplayed by Kody Kirkland
The error allowed two runs to score, giving Altoona a 4-0 lead
Jason Delaney followed with a two-run single to give the Curve a 6-0 lead

Altoona starter Dewon Brazelton (5-5) tossed a complete game shutout allowing just three hits
He walked one and struck out five

The only SeaWolves who collected hits in game one were Matt Joyce with a single in the first; Nick Trzesniak with a double in the fifth and Clete Thomas with a single in the seventh

Game Two

Two Altoona pitchers combined to toss six perfect innings in game two of Friday’s doubleheader as they completed the sweep of the ‘Wolves with a 3-0 win

The Curve once again jumped ahead in the first inning against Erie starter Corey Hamman
Jason Bowers led off the game and connected on a solo home run, his seventh of the season, for a 1-0 lead
With one out, Brad Corley singled to bring Adam Boeve to the plate
Boeve connected on a two-run home run, his 17th, for a 3-0 Curve lead

Altoona starter Wardell Starling tossed the first four innings and was perfect with two strikeouts

Reliever Patrick Bresenehan (1-0) continued the perfect game going the fifth and sixth innings, also striking out a pair

The Curve would lose the perfect game bid in the bottom of the seventh inning with their closer Matt Peterson on the hill
Clete Thomas drew a leadoff walk to end the perfect game and Will Rhymes connected on an infield single to break up the no-hitter and give Erie runners on first and second
After a Matt Joyce flyout to center, Jeff Larish singled to load the bases with only one out
However, Peterson shut the door retiring Mike Hernandez on a pop-out to short and Steve Torrealba on a groundout to short

The SeaWolves combined to collect just five hits in the two ballgames on Friday night

It was the third time this season in which Erie was swept in a doubleheader

The SeaWolves and Curve meet in doubleheader action again on Saturday night - 5.05pm first pitch
Game one will feature LHP Jon Connolly (7-6, 4.37 ERA) for the 'Wolves going up against LHP Luis Munoz (11-5, 3.82 ERA)
Game two will be RHP Randor Bierd (3-1, 2.74 ERA) against LHP Kyle Bloom (0-1, 1.80 ERA)

Curve nearly perfect in sweep

One day after being eliminated from playoff contention, the Curve turned in their most impressive evening of the season
Altoona flirted with history by almost throwing a perfect game and ended up firing two shutouts in sweeping a doubleheader Friday night against Erie at Jerry Uht Park
The Curve won, 6-0 and 3-0

Dewon Brazelton tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener, then Altoona’s pitching staff was even better in the nightcap
It took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh and last inning before settling for a two-hitter

The Curve have never thrown a perfect game and have had only one no-hitter in franchise history
That occurred in 2002 and was a combined effort between Adrian Burnside, Neal McDade and Chris Spurling

Wardell Starling worked the first four perfect innings of the second game Friday, striking out two
Patrick Bresnehan (1-0) then struck out two in his two perfect frames
Closer Matt Peterson came on in the seventh and lost the perfect game immediately with a four-pitch walk to Clete Thomas
The no-hitter went by the wayside when the next batter, Will Rhymes, hit a ball up the middle that shortstop Taber Lee fielded but could not get to second base in time for the forceout

The SeaWolves loaded the bases on Jeff Larish’s infield single before Peterson escaped the jam

Peterson picked up his 28th save for a new franchise record, surpassing Brandon Knight’s 27 last season

The Curve scored all three runs in the first inning as Jason Bowers led off with a homer and Adam Boeve added a two-run shot

Brazelton (5-5) struck out five, walked one and recorded his third complete game in 15 starts for Altoona in the opener

Brett Roneberg hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Brad Corley’s two-run single highlighted a four-run sixth that blew it open

Erie starters Corey Hamman (0-3) and Jeff Gerbe (0-1) took the losses

Offense slows 'Wolves' title run
EL Southern Division still up for grabs after pair of shutout losses

With the right sequence of events, the champagne could have been uncorked
Instead, the Erie SeaWolves' offense kept it on ice, producing a combined five hits in 6-0 and 3-0 doubleheader losses to the Altoona Curve on Friday before 5,652 fans at Jerry Uht Park

"Tonight is one of those nights you want to forget about" SeaWolves right fielder Matt Joyce said

Erie (79-57), first in the Eastern League Southern Division, saw its four-game lead over second-place Akron whittled to 2-1/2 games after Akron's 4-2 win at Binghamton on Friday
Erie's magic number for clinching the division remained at three

The SeaWolves played Friday's doubleheader without Eastern League All-Star second baseman Michael Hollimon, who was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on Friday
"Hollimon's loss affects chemistry" SeaWolves manager Matt Walbeck said
"Looking at our club tonight, without him, it definitely has a different feel to it
You're taking away your captain and someone with 14 homers and 76 RBIs
It makes a difference, and right-hander Eddie Bonine's energy is missed, too
Those are things good teams have to overcome"

Hollimon's departure wasn't lost on his former teammates
"Minor leagues is all about player development" Joyce said
"We want to win here and the Tigers want the minor league teams to do the best the best they're capable of, but sometimes they need to move guys around and we kind of feel the effects"

Altoona right-hander Dewon Brazelton blanked the SeaWolves on three hits in the opener
Curve right-handers Wardell Starling and Patrick Bresnehan combined on a six-inning perfect game in the second game before Erie managed a walk and two infield singles off of Altoona closer Matt Peterson in the seventh

"We have so many news guys now, we're trying to grow accustomed to and get used to each other all over again" Joyce said
"That's hard when you get a lot of new guys in and out and you don't really have the same core nucleus that you did, but we're still going to be fine and ready for the playoffs"

To clinch the division on Friday, Erie would have needed to sweep Altoona and have Akron lose
That scenario didn't quite go as expected, and though the SeaWolves are playoff-bound, they may be feeling some heat from Akron now to clinch a division title

"There's going to have to be a transition for us where we're going to make the adjustment for our chemistry because it doesn't do any good to complain about it" Walbeck said

In the second game, Altoona scored all of its runs in the first off of Erie lefty Corey Hamman
Second baseman Jason Bowers led off with a homer to left
Brad Corley singled with one out and scored on Adam Boeve's two-run homer to center

The Curve managed just two hits off of Erie right-hander Jeff Gerbe in the opener, but one of them was a two-run homer by first baseman Brett Roneberg in the first inning

Gerbe, making a spot start following his promotion from low Single-A West Michigan, retired 14 straight hitters before the Curve scored four runs on just one hit in the sixth to break open a tight game
In that inning, the Curve took advantage of a three Gerbe walks and a costly fielding error by Erie third baseman Kody Kirkland

Gerbe started in place of right-hander Eddie Bonine, who made a spot start for Triple-A Toledo on Friday at Columbus

Notes
Altoona was the home team in the opener of Friday's doubleheader because the game was a completion of a suspended game on Aug. 19 at Blair County Ballpark
Erie lefty Jon Connolly(7-6, 4.37) is set to face Altoona RH Luis Munoz (11-5, 3.82) in the opener of today's doubleheader
Right-handed reliever Randor Bierd (3-1, 2.74) will make a spot start for Erie in the second game against Curve lefty Kyle Bloom
