Game Reports
The Altoona Curve were officially
eliminated from playoff contention as they dropped their home
finale at Blair County Ballpark, 6-2, to Reading
The loss, coupled with an Akron victory over Bowie, makes it mathematically
impossible for the Curve to overtake the Aeros
The Curve's string of four-consecutive playoff appearances will
end as well
The 6,191 in attendance brought the Curve's season attendance
at 356,339, the sixth consecutive season the Curve have eclipsed
350,000 in attendance
A streak that stretches back to 2002
Reading starter Josh Outman was in control throughout his seven-inning
stint, holding Altoona to just two runs on six hits
Outman (2-3) won for just the second time at the double-A level,
with both wins coming against the Curve
Curve starter Kip Bouknight also pitched well, equaling a career-high
with 10 strikeouts over seven innings
The right-hander made one mistake however, and Joey Hammond made
it hurt, blasting a Bouknight offering for a three-run home run
in the fourth inning to give Reading a 3-0 lead
The Curve response came immediately as they plated their lone
two runs in the bottom of the inning
Brandon Chaves, activated from the disabled list prior to the
ballgame, contributed a sacrifice fly to score Adam Boeve and
an infield-single from Bouknight that scored Jason Delaney made
it a one-run game
Outman recovered after the uprising to retire nine straight Curve
hitters
The R-Phils used that time to stretch their lead
The final run off of Bouknight plated on an RBI single for Greg
Golson in the seventh as Reading upped the lead to 4-2
Jose Paniagua relieved Bouknight in the eighth and permitted two
runs in two innings
Peeter Ramos doubled home Hammond in the seventh and Golson clubbed
a solo home run in the eighth to cap the scoring
Bouknight (11-6) was tagged with his sixth loss of the season
Julio Mateo tossed two scoreless innings to finish the ballgame
and was rewarded with his third save of the season
The Curve will open a season-ending series with the Erie SeaWolves
with a doubleheader at Jerry Uht Park in Erie on Friday night
at 5.05pm
RHP Dewon Brazelton (4-5, 3.84) will start game one for the Curve
with a TBA starter in game two
Both starters for Erie have yet to be determined
The Reading Phillies used a
16-hit attack to defeat the Altoona Curve 6-2 Thursday night at
Blair County Ballpark to gain a split of a four-game Eastern League
series
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning
With one out, Jason Hill and Greg Jacobs singled
Joey Hammond followed with his fourth home run, a three-run shot
to left
The Curve (69-66) answered with two runs in the bottom of the
fourth on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Chaves and a bad-hop infield
single by pitcher Kip Bouknight
Greg Golson's two-out RBI single in the seventh made it 4-2 Phillies
Reading (69-68) added another two-out run in the eighth on a double
by Peeter Ramos
Josh Outman (2-3) went seven innings for the Phillies
He gave up two runs on six hits
Outman walked two and struck out five. Both of his wins were against
the Curve
Bouknight (11-6) tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts
He allowed four runs on 12 hits in seven innings
Michael Spidale was 3-for-5 for the Phillies with a run scored
Golson was also 3-for-5, adding a solo homer in the ninth
Julio Mateo pitched two scoreless innings for his third save
The Curve said goodbye to Blair
County Ballpark and to their playoff hopes Thursday night
Altoona was eliminated from postseason contention in its home
finale by a 6-2 loss to Reading, ending the Curves streak
of four consecutive years in the playoffs
Its not a great feeling, to be honest with you
manager Tim Leiper said
The Curve will wrap up the regular season at Erie this weekend
Thursdays game drew 6,191 fans to BCB, putting the season
total at 356,339
The Curve averaged 5,318 fans, down 3.9 percent from last years
mark of 5,536
This is
a great place to play Curve veteran Brett Roneberg
said
We havent had the year we would like to have
had, but its always fun playing here
Reading scored three runs in the fourth inning and pulled away
late for Thursdays win
Josh Outman (2-3) got the victory and Julio Mateo his third save
for the R-Phils, while Kip Bouknight (11-6) took the loss
Akron beat Bowie to seal the Curves playoff hopes
Those hopes were badly damaged by a 10-game losing streak in May,
and the club couldnt get over the hump the rest of the way
The 10-game losing streak there really hurt us, and
we shuffled some players around and we just never really got on
that big roll reliever Jason Roach said
Its a lot different this year going off the
field than it was last year Leiper said
We left here last year with a playoff win going to
Akron
Team Awards
Prior to Thursdays game, first baseman Steven Pearce was
named Curve MVP
Pearce, now at Triple-A Indianapolis, hit .334 with 14 homers
and 72 RBIs in only 81 games for Altoona
What an impact he made on us Leiper said
It was pretty special to see what he did
Reliever Matt Peterson was named the Curves Pitcher of the
Year
Hes 4-2 with a 2.02 ERA and has tied the franchise record
with 27 saves
Catcher Brian Peterson was given the Curves Unsung Hero
Award, and outfielder Adam Boeve the King of Swing honor for leading
the team with 16 home runs
