Game Reports
Reading plated four runs in
the second inning and never looked back, beating the Curve 8-2
at Blair County Ballpark on Wednesday night
Greg Jacobs ignited the R-Phil offense in the second inning, teeing
off on a Yoslan Herrera breaking ball and sending it over the
wall in right field
The blast followed a lead off single from Jason Hill and gave
Reading a 2-0 lead
The R-Phils weren't finished in the inning, plating two more runs
off of Herrera to lead 4-0
The Curve did their only damage off of R-Phils' starter Patrick
Overholt in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 4-2
Jason Bowers again delivered, knocking in Taber Lee and Omar Falcon
with a two-run double
Bowers was 2-for-4 on the night, and extended his personal hit
streak to eight games
Other than that hiccup, Overholt (6-8) was outstanding for Reading
The right-hander tossed seven innings, allowing just the two runs
on five hits while striking out four
Overholt completed his evening by retiring the final 13 batters
that he faced
Jacobs victimized Herrera again in the third, belting a double
to left field that scored Mike Costanzo
Herrera (6-8) was tagged with the loss after lasting just three
innings and allowing five earned runs
Reading extended their lead with two runs off of reliever Jason
Roach in the fourth
Michael Garciaparra started the inning with a single and scored
two batters later on a Greg Golson RBI triple
Costanzo followed with a double and the R-Phils led 7-2
The R-Phils capped the scoring with an unearned run off of Wardell
Starling in the eighth
Jacobs doubled to lead off and scored on a Lee throwing error
The series concludes with the final home game of the 2007 season
for the Curve Thursday night at 7.05pm
RHP Kip Bouknight (11-5, 3.76) will make the start for Altoona
against LHP Josh Outman (1-2, 4.25) for the Phillies
Patrick Overholt threw seven
strong innings and Greg Jacobs led the offensive attack in the
Reading Phillies' 8-2 Eastern League win over the Altoona Curve
Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark
After the Phillies scored four runs in the top of the second,
Overholt allowed two runs in the bottom half of the inning on
a two-out double by Jason Bowers before settling down
Overholt (6-8) retired the last 13 hitters he faced and 16 of
the last 17
He gave up five hits and two walks and struck out four in his
longest outing for Reading this season
Jacobs hit his 20th homer of the year, a two-run shot in the second,
and added a pair of doubles in a 3-for-5 night with two runs and
three RBI
Jacobs has 38 doubles on the season, tied for second in franchise
history and one behind David Doster's record set in 1995
Mike Costanzo was 3-for-5 in the 13-hit attack
He had a double, his 90th run scored and 81st RBI
Jacobs has also driven in 81 runs
Peeter Ramos was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI
The Phillies (68-68) again reached the .500 mark with the win
The Curve (69-65) had a two-game winning streak come to an end
Yoslan Herrera (6-8) allowed five runs in three innings to take
the loss
The Curves 2007 pulse
became a lot more faint Wednesday night
As things stood going into play Wednesday, the Curve already needed
a miracle in the final week of the season to pull out an Eastern
League playoff spot
But Wednesdays 8-2 loss to Reading before 4,368 fans at
Blair County Ballpark could very well serve to initiate the process
of last rites for the Curve
Now, any combination of Curve losses and/or victories by second-place
Akron totaling two would put the Curve on the outside looking
in when the postseason begins next week
Which means the Curve could suffer elimination as early as tonight
- when the Curve wrap up their regular-season home schedule and
this four-game series against Reading
The odds dont rattle Curve manager Tim Leiper - at least
by all outward appearances
Were not giving up Leiper said after Wednesdays
game
Until were mathematically eliminated, were going
to keep playing our tails off
Stranger things have happened
The Curve - who have qualified for the playoffs in each of the
past four seasons - fell behind early in Wednesdays game
and never recovered
Reading built a 5-2 lead courtesy of outfielder Greg Jacobs
two-run homer that highlighted a four-run second inning, and Jacobs
RBI double in the third
The home run was Jacobs 20th this season, and Wednesdays
three RBIs gave him 81 for the year
Hes a quality veteran guy who adds a lot to our lineup
Reading manager P.J. Forbes said of Jacobs
He really hasnt gone through a significant stretch
this season where he hasnt been productive
The R-Phils mounted the early offense against Curve starting and
losing pitcher Yoslan Herrera (6-8), who had entered the game
with a 6-3 record and 3.13 earned run average in his last 13 starts
Leiper noticed some extra zip on Herreras fast ball Wednesday,
but the second inning proved to be Herreras undoing
The Cuban native worked only three innings, allowing five earned
runs and six hits
Reading bunched four hits to score four runs in the second inning,
with catcher Jason Hills single preceding Jacobs homer
over the right field fence
First baseman Joey Hammond singled to center, went to second on
a Herrera wild pitch, and scored when second baseman Peeter Ramos
smoked a double to left
Ramos was wild-pitched to third, from where he scored Readings
fourth run on a sacrifice fly to right field by Michael Spidale
Trailing, 4-0, the Curve bounced back with two runs in the bottom
of the second inning, as second baseman Jason Bowers flipped a
two-run double down the right-field line off Reading starter and
winner Patrick Overholt (6-8)
Bowers double plated shortstop Taber Lee, who had walked,
and catcher Omar Falcon, who had singled to left
Bowers led off Wednesdays game with a single to center,
extending his personal hitting streak to eight games
I dont think about the hitting streak
Bowers said
I didnt even know about it
My job is to just get on base
Reading pitcher Overholt did a good job of settling down after
the second-inning trouble
After allowing outfielder Brad Corleys two-out third-inning
single, Overholt retired the next 13 batters in succession before
departing following the seventh inning
Meanwhile, Reading expanded its lead to 7-2 in the fourth inning
with two runs against Curve reliever Jason Roach
Michael Garciaparra - the younger brother of Dodgers star
Nomar Garciapara - chopped an infield single, and scored on Greg
Golsons triple to right
Golson scored when Mike Costanzo rocketed a double to right-center
The runs gave Overholt some breathing room, which Forbes felt
was important in his pitcher maintaining his composure
The key to the game was Overholt settling down and attacking
the strike zone Forbes said
He did a nice job being aggressive in the zone, and he got
stronger as things went along
While the Curves playoff prospects got weaker, and dimmer
Were still battling, and we still think we have a
chance Bowers said
Tonight, things just didnt work out for us
