Game Reports
Josh Shortslef turned in six
solid innings as the Curve took game two from the Reading Phillies,
4-2, on Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark
Shortslef (5-12), who has enjoyed a late-season resurgence, won
for the second time on the homestand, scattering eight hits and
allowing a lone run in six innings
Shortslef has partially salvaged a season that began with a 2-12
record
The left-hander is 3-0 in his last four starts, allowing just
three earned runs in 25 innings
Matt Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 27th
save of the season, a mark that ties the franchise-record that
was established in 2006 by Brandon Knight
Peterson will have the Curve's remaining nine games to attempt
to establish a new record
Reading did score first in the ballgame, plating their lone run
off of Shortslef in the third inning
Chris Rojas, pinch-hitting for R-Phils's starter Heath Totten,
doubled with one out to start the rally
He scored to give Reading a 1-0 lead a batter later on a Greg
Golsen RBI single
The Curve erased the deficit and jumped to the lead in the fourth
Russ Johnson and Brett
Roneberg singled off of Reading reliever Allen Davis to set the stage for Brad Corley
Corley, who was promoted to Altoona yesterday, picked up his first
RBI by driving home Johnson with a single back up the middle
Taber Lee followed with
another single to plate Roneberg and give the Curve a 2-1 lead
Davis (3-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing those two runs
in two innings
Leading off the sixth
inning, Roneberg added to the Curve lead with his first home run
since June 12th to put Altoona ahead 3-1
The drive, sent to right field off of Scott Mathieson, held up
as the game-winner
The Curve tacked on a second run off of Mathieson to cap their
scoring
The Phillies then scored an unearned run in the eighth
With the win, the Curve secured the season series victory over
Reading for the fifth consecutive year
Altoona is 11-8 against the R-Phils with two games remaining on
the season
Game three of the series will be played Wednesday night at Blair
County Ballpark at 7.05pm
RHP Yoslan Herrera (6-7, 4.33) will make the start for Altoona
against RHP Patrick Overholt (5-8, 5.50) for Reading
Josh Shortslef allowed one
run in six innings and Brett Roneberg homered and scored twice
in the Altoona Curve's 4-2 Eastern League win over the Reading
Phillies Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark
Shortslef (5-12) won his third straight decision
He gave up eight hits, but walked just one batter
The Curve (69-64) have won three of their last four games, while
the R-Phils (67-68) have dropped four of their last five contests
Reading took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out RBI single by
Greg Golson
Altoona went in front in the fourth against Allen Davis (3-1)
Brad Corley and Taber Lee each had a run-scoring single to put
the Curve up 2-1
Roneberg started the
sixth inning with his sixth homer and Jason Bowers had an RBI single with two outs to
extend the Curve lead to three runs
The Phillies scored an unearned run in the eighth
Philadelphia pitcher
Scott Mathieson made a Major League Rehab appearance
He pitched two innings in relief, allowing two hits, including
a home run, and two runs
He walked two and struck out a pair
Michael Spidale had his third straight three-hit game for the
Phillies
Golson and Michael Garciaparra each had two hits
The Phillies left 12 runners on base for the third time in four
games
Matt Peterson pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save, tying
the Curve single-season record
Zack Segovia was scratched from his start for the Phillies due
to a sore shoulder
Heath Totten made the emergency start and retired all six batters
he faced
A free agent at the end of
the season, Matt Peterson is not sure where he'll be next year
However, one thing is certain - Peterson's name will be in the
Altoona Curve record book, regardless of where he's pitching
The Curve closer tied the franchise record with his 27th save
Tuesday night as Altoona beat Reading, 4-2, before 4,682 fans
at Blair County Ballpark
Peterson, who has only five blown save opportunities in 32 chances,
tied the club mark set by Brandon Knight in 2006
I was told during the spring that it [the closer] was my
job to lose Peterson said and it stuck with
me
Originally drafted by the Mets in the second round in 2000, Peterson
was acquired by the Pirates in July 2004 in a trade that sent
Kris Benson to New York
Peterson was assigned to Altoona after the trade and has filled
several roles with the club - starter, middle reliever and closer
Peterson retired all three batters he faced Tuesday night to keep
the Curves fading Eastern League playoff hopes alive
I definitely like the relief role, whether it's closing
or set-up he said
"Whatever it takes to get to the big leagues, I'll do"
However, Peterson is in his final year under contract with the
Pirates, and the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder, who also spent a few weeks
with Triple-A Indianapolis this season, said he'll be looking
around during the off-season
"You never know what will happen" Peterson said
"I'll go into the off-season and search around for some teams,
and see where I think the best spot for me will be"
Curve manager Tim Leiper has been impressed with Peterson's performance
this season
"He's done a great job" Leiper said
"Once he moved to the bullpen last year, he's really been
flourishing
He was a big reason we made the playoffs last year
This year we didn't have a closer to start the season, and he
got the chances early, and stepped up" Leiper noted
"When he goes in the game, you've got a real good feeling
that it's going to get closed"
Pitching coach Ray Searage also gives Peterson high marks for
the season
"He's got better command of his stuff than last year"
Searage offered
"If you look at the turnaround he made when he went from
the rotation to the bullpen, that was a good start
What he's got going right now is that he's filling his role, being
aggressive, and he's throwing four pitches for strikes" Searage
noted
"I'd like to see a little better fastball command, but he's
got stuff to fall back on"
Josh Shortslef gave the Curve another solid start and the Altoona
offense did enough to put up another victory
The Curve scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to grab
a 2-1 lead, and they added a pair in the sixth to make it 4-1
Brett Roneberg's homer
- his first since June 12
- made it 3-1 and Jason Bowers singled in Taber Lee with the fourth
tally
Reading picked up an unearned run off of Ronald Belisario in the
eighth before Peterson came on to nail it down in the ninth
Brad Corley's first Double-A RBI tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth
inning
"It felt great, just great" Corley said accepting congratulations
"It's an honor to be here, especially the way the season
started for me"
Corley struggled early in the season at high-A Lynchburg, hitting
just .189
But, he posted a .331 mark over his last 83 games with the Hillcats
before being promoted to Altoona
He was leading the Class A Carolina League in RBIs (89) and hits
(138) was second in doubles (36) and extra-base hits (54) when
he joined the Curve on Monday
"I know I'm supposed to start the season here next year"
Corley said "but right now, I'm just having fun
It's a great town, and this is the best park I've ever played
in"
"It's great that he's getting a chance to get his feet wet
in Double-A" Leiper said
"He's obviously going to start here next year
He's earned his way, and he should hit the ground running next
year"
Notes
Right-handed pitcher
Scott Mathieson, on a rehab assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies,
worked two innings for the R-Phils
Mathieson, who had
Tommy John surgery last Sept. 29, served up a sixth-inning home
run to Brett Roneberg on his third pitch
Mathieson also walked two and gave up an infield single to Jason
Bowers that scored Taber Lee
Mathieson didnt have great command, but his fastball consistently
reached the mid-90s

was scratched Monday after complaining of shoulder pain
Scott Mathieson, making

assignment, was greeted in the sixth by Brett Ronebergs
solo home run
After two walks, the Curve added a run off Mathieson on an RBI
infield single by Jason Bowers
Josh Shortslef tossed six solid
innings as Altoona beat visiting Reading, 4-2, on Tuesday
Shortslef (5-12) yielded one run on eight hits and a walk with
two strikeouts
After opening the season 2-12, the 25-year-old left-hander has
allowed only four earned runs over 25 innings in going 3-0 in
his last four starts
Matt Peterson fanned one in a perfect ninth to notch his 27th
save, tying the franchise record set last season by Brandon Knight

2-for-4 with his sixth homer and two runs scored and Jason Bowers chipped in two hits
and an RBI for the Curve (69-64)
