Game Reports
Luis Munoz turned in seven
scoreless innings as the Curve blanked the Reading Phillies, 3-0,
in game one of a four-game series at Blair County Ballpark on
Monday night
Munoz (11-5) was in control throughout his 11th victory of the
season, permitting just five hits and striking out two in his
seven-inning outing
After allowing a leadoff single to Michael Spidale to start the
ballgame, Munoz retired the next 13 batters he faced
R-Phils' starter Chris Rojas was nearly as good, matching zeros
with Munoz through five innings
But the Curve finally got to the right-hander in the sixth
Adam Boeve started the inning with a broken-bat, infield-single
Brad Corley, added to the Curve roster from Lynchburg earlier
in the day, followed with a single to move Boeve to second
Jason Delaney walked to load the bases with nobody out, and Brian
Peterson followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to break
the scoreless-tie and give the Curve a 1-0 lead
It was anything but an infield-single for Boeve as the Curve stretched
their lead to 3-0 in the seventh
With Vic Buttler aboard, Boeve crushed a pitch from R-Phils' reliever
Julio De La Cruz onto the hillside above the left field bleachers
Boeve's 16th home run of the year gave the Curve a three-run cushion
That was more than enough for the Curve bullpen
Chris Hernandez pitched a scoreless eighth inning despite allowing
back-to-back singles to start the frame
It was Hernandez's ninth consecutive scoreless outing (11.0 IP)
Curve closer Matt Peterson slammed the door in the ninth, picking
up his 26th save of the year after turning in a scoreless inning
that included two strike outs
Rojas (6-4) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one
run on six hits over 5-1/3 innings
Rojas did issue five walks in the ballgame
Jason Bowers enjoyed a three-hit night for Altoona, finishing
the evening 3-for-5 including a double
Game two of the series will be played at 7.05pm at Blair County
Ballpark
LHP Josh Shortslef (4-12, 4.33) will start for the Curve against
a 'TBA' starter for Reading
Luis Munoz tossed seven scoreless
innings and Adam Boeve delivered a two-run homer in the Altoona
Curve's 3-0 Eastern League win over the Reading Phillies Monday
night at Blair County Ballpark
Munoz (11-5) allowed just five hits
He walked none and struck out two in improving to 3-0 against
the Phillies
The game was scoreless into the sixth inning
The Curve (68-65) got back-to-back singles from Boeve and Brad
Corley to start the inning
Chris Rojas (6-4) walked Jason Delaney to load the bases
Brian Peterson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-0
In the seventh, Vic Buttler drew a leadoff walk from Julio De
La Cruz and scored on Boeve's 16th home run of the season
Boeve was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI
Reading pitching issued seven walks in the game
Matt Peterson tossed a scoreless ninth for his 26th save of the
season
The Phillies (67-67) had several chances to score, but were blanked
for the seventh time this season
They had a runner on third with one out in the first and failed
to score
They left the bases loaded in the seventh and could not capitalize
on a first and third, no-out situation in the eighth
Michael Spidale had three hits and two steals for the Phillies
and Joey Hammond was 2-for-4 with a double
Mike Costanzo went down on strikes twice to set the R-Phils' franchise
single-season strikeout mark with 149, passing Greg Luzinski
Altoona Curve manager Tim Leiper
regards outfielder Adam Boeve as the consummate professional
Which is part of the reason why Boeve didnt return to Altoona
Aug 17 with a chip on his shoulder after two promotions to Class
AAA Indianapolis
Boeve was naturally disappointed to get bumped back down to the
Class AA Curve after a solid showing in Indianapolis, where he
batted .277 with four homers and six RBI while appearing in 29
games
But the 27-year-old, fifth-year pro has kept his nose to the grindstone
and his attitude positive
On Monday night, he slugged his 20th homer of the season and scored
twice to lead the Curve to a 3-0 win over Reading before 4,948
at Blair County Ballpark
Boeve crushed a slider from Reading reliever Julio De La Cruz
on to the hillside above the leftfield bleachers in the seventh
inning, scoring Vic Buttler ahead of him with the runs that staked
Altoona to a 3-0 cushion
I hit a slider that stayed out over the plate, and the ball
definitely came off my bat good Boeve said
I was able to get a pitch I could handle with two strikes
there
Boeve appeared to be handling Class AAA pitching well, too, during
his latest tenure in Indianapolis
But he fell victim to a numbers game and was returned to Altoona
in mid-August after infielder Neil Walker and outfielder Andrew
McCutchen were sent up to Indy by the Curve
Any time you go back down a level, its going to be
disappointing said Boeve, who played all three outfield
positions at Indianapolis
And (because he was doing well at Class AAA) makes it (the
recall by the Curve) a little more frustrating
But Indianapolis had players who they wanted to get out on the
field, and I wasnt one of them
But coming back here, which is a great place to play, with great
teammates and great coaches, makes the move back to Class AA a
little bit easier for me Boeve added
Curve manager Tim Leiper said Boeve has always been one of the
players who has made his job easier
Hes played his way out of this level, but were
always glad to have him here Leiper said
Hes always been a consummate professional who works
hard every single day
Boeve also scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning,
reaching on a leadoff infield hit and crossing the plate on catcher
Brian Petersons sacrifice fly to right field off Reading
starting and losing pitcher Chris Rojas (6-4)
On a night when the Curves pitching proved solid from top
to bottom, three runs were more than enough
Starting and winning pitcher Luis Munoz worked seven scoreless
innings to improve to 11-5, allowing just five hits
Chris Hernandez pitched a scoreless eighth - his ninth straight
scoreless outing covering a total of 11 innings - and Matt Peterson
struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning for his 26th
save of the year
Munie (Munoz) had a good game plan and followed it for seven
innings said Curve pitching coach Ray Searage
And Herny and Peterson have been our go-to guys since the
beginning of the season
All our pitchers pitched very well tonight
Reading stranded eight baserunners, including two who had reached
third base with less than two outs
Obviously, their pitchers executed well tonight
Reading manager P.J. Forbes said of the Curves three hurlers
Monday
But we had baserunners on third base with less than two
outs twice and did not score
Those are gimme RBI situations
If you dont score there, youre not going to win
The Curve closed play Monday 5-1/2 games behind second-place Akron
for the Southern Divisions final playoff spot
While the teams playoff possibilities are remote, Leiper
was heartened by what he saw from his team Monday
It was a good, clean baseball game in which we did all the
little things well Leiper said
