Game Reports

Russ Johnson (pictured) delivered two home runs as the Curve snapped a six-game losing streak
with a 10-inning, 5-2 win over the Reading Phillies on Wednesday night
The win allowed the Curve to salvage the final game of a three-game series in Reading

Johnson powers Curve in ten innings win

The Curve scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Reading Phillies, 5-2, on Wednesday night, snapping Altoona's six-game losing streak

Taber Lee pinch-hit to lead off the 10th for Altoona and promptly delivered a single to get the Curve started
Jason Bowers sacrificed Lee to second, and he advanced to third on a ground out by Peter Bergeron
Following an intentional walk to Russ Johnson, Vic Buttler delivered the eventual game-winning single to score Lee and give the Curve a 3-2 lead
A batter later, Jason Delaney delivered some insurance in the form of a two-run single that capped the scoring, 5-2

Johnson got the Curve started in the first inning with the first of two home runs on the night
Johnson's blast to left field off of Phillies' starter Chris Rojas gave Altoona a 1-0 lead

The R-Phils took the lead in the fourth inning, finally getting to Curve starter Luis Munoz
Joey Hammond led off the inning with a single, and was pushed to second base when Munoz walked Michael Costanzo
The pair were sacrificed to third, and scored on a two-run single delivered by Peeter Ramos to give Reading a 2-1 lead

Munoz worked six strong innings, allowing just those two runs on five hits, but did not factor in the decision

Johnson leveled the score with his second drive of the night in the sixth
Again Johnson victimized Rojas, sending his second homer to left field to tie the score, 2-2

The game stayed tied into the tenth, as Romulo Sanchez turned in three scoreless inning of relief
Sanchez (6-3) was rewarded with his sixth victory of the season

Following the Curve rally, Matt Peterson retired the Reading side in order in the bottom of the tenth to earn his 24th save of the season

Chris Key (5-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing the three runs to the Curve in the tenth

The Curve return to Blair County Ballpark on Thursday night to open an eight-game homestand which will conclude the home portion of the Curve's regular season

The homestand begins with a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators
Game one is scheduled for 7.05pm
LHP Josh Shortslef (3-12, 4.45) will make the start for Altoona against RHP Beltran Perez (6-5, 4.45) for Harrisburg

Joey Hammond climbed the left field wall in the first inning
but couldn't pull back Russ Johnson's solo home run

Peeter Ramos tags out Altoona's Adam Boeve
who was trying to steal on Tim Gradoville in the second inning
It was the first of two runners Gradoville caught in just four innings

Curve end Reading Phillies winning streak

The Altoona Curve, struggling to score runs recently, scored three runs in the 10th inning Wednesday and ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Phillies

Vic Buttler knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to right
After a walk to Adam Boeve, Jason Delaney delivered a two-run single, all the runs coming off Chris Key (5-2), the fourth Phillies pitcher

At gametime, the Curve (65-62) had scored just one run in their previous 30 innings

The Phillies (65-63), who lost a five-game winning streak, had taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Peeter Ramos' hard two-run single up the middle after the Curve walked Greg Jacobs intentionally to load the bases

Russ Johnson's homer in the first off Chris Rojas had ended a home scoreless streak of 24 innings put up by Phillies pitchers

Johnson, sent down from Triple-A five days ago, tied it 2-2 leading off the sixth with his third homer in six games

Neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision

Rojas, subbing for Gary Knotts, who was called to Triple-A after his one-hit shutout effort Thursday against Erie, pitched well
He allowed two runs on six hits, with three walks and two strikeouts

His opposite, Luis Munoz, also went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks

Romulo Sanchez (6-3) got the win with three scoreless innings

Matt Peterson pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save

Rod Barajas, on the second game of his major league rehab stint, went 1-for-3, catching the last six innings

Notes
After gunning down two would-be base stealers at second, catcher Tim Gradoville has thrown runners out at a 'ridiculous' 65.5 percent (19-for-29) - Gradoville was replaced by rehabbing Rod Barajas in the bottom of the fourth
Greg Jacobs' double in the sixth was his 35th of the season, moving him to within four of franchise leader David Doster

Win gives team a bit of hope

As a precautionary measure, the Curve franchise is putting Eastern League playoff tickets on sale beginning today
The franchise has to do it, just in case, even though this year’s team has seen its postseason hopes all but disappear during a recent six-game losing streak

The Curve’s flickering hopes got a little boost Wednesday as they snapped their six-game skid with a 5-2 win in 10 innings at Reading

Altoona returns to Blair County Ballpark Thursday for the final homestand of the regular season, and it can ill afford to drop more than one or two of the remaining eight home games

The Curve trail second-place Akron by six games in the Southern Division wild card chase and also are 3-1/2 behind third-place Bowie

Russ Johnson homered twice for Altoona on Wednesday, and Vic Buttler singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning

Jason Delaney added a two-run single for some insurance in the 10th

Reliever Romulo Sanchez (6-3) turned in one of his best outings of the season, tossing three scoreless innings for the win

Matt Peterson worked the 10th for his 24th save, three shy of the franchise record

R-Phils reliever Chris Key (5-2) took the loss

The Curve had been shut out three straight times and scored just one run in their last 30 innings entering Wednesday’s game

Johnson homered in the first inning and tied the game at 2-2 with another solo shot in the sixth
