Game Reports
The Altoona Curve continued
their recent offensive woes, managing just four hits in a rain-shortened,
10-0 loss to the Reading Phillies in the opener of a three-game
series Monday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA
The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning after heavy
rainfall forced the game to be halted
Reading left-hander Josh Outman baffled Curve hitters over eight
scoreless innings to earn a shutout victory
Outman (1-2), one of the Philadelphia Phillies' top pitching prospects,
scattered four hits, walked five and fanned four in picking up
his first Double-A victory
In their last three games, the Curve offense has managed just
one run in 22 innings
On Saturday, the Curve dropped both ends of a doubleheader to
first-place Erie after managing just one run and three hits between
the two contests
Altoona (64-61) has now lost five consecutive games and drops
6-1/2 games behind E.L. South wild-card leader Akron, which had
its game at Erie postponed Monday night
Reading (64-62) won its fourth in a row and is now just 1/2 game
behind the fourth-place Curve in the standings
Curve right-hander Kip Bouknight (11-5) dropped his second consecutive
decision after allowing four runs - one earned - in 5-1/3 innings
Bouknight tossed scoreless baseball into the fifth inning before
yielding a two-run double to Reading center fielder Greg Golson
Reading padded its lead against Bouknight in the sixth, when Outman
delivered a two-run single to right-center field to make the score
4-0
Outman went 3-for-4 at the plate in addition to his eight shutout
innings on the mound
The Phillies blew the game open in the seventh and eighth innings,
scoring six times against reliever Jason Roach
Reading was poised to add to its 10-0 advantage in the eighth,
loading the bases after two outs before the game was stopped due
to a consistent, heavy downpour
Jason Bowers counted half of Altoona's four hits, going 2-for-4
at the plate
Jason Delaney and Javier Guzman added the Curve's other hits in
the loss
The Curve and R-Phils will play the middle game of their three-game
series Tuesday evening at 7.05pm
Dewon Brazelton (4-3, 3.67) will make the start for Altoona against
Philadelphia Phillies' top prospect Carlos Carrasco (4-3, 5.40)
With a sense for the dramatic,
Phillies lefty Josh Outman collected his first Double-A victory,
shut out the Altoona Curve on four hits over a season-high eight
innings, and, oh, yeah, also was the hitting star Monday night
in a 10-0 victory
Outman (1-2) struck out four and walked five and had things pretty
much his own way after the third inning
For the Phillies it was the first time they've posted back-to-back
shutouts at home since June 2 and 6 of 2000 v Binghamton and Harrisburg
respectively
Offensively, Outman was 3-for-4, including a pivotal two-run single
in the sixth
He was down in the count 0-2, fouled off two pitches, and singled
to right for a 4-0 lead
A pair of two-out, two-run hits also were huge at the time
Greg Golson delivered a two-run double in the fifth, Outman starting
the rally with an infield single
Then, in the seventh, Michael Garciaparra flared a single to right
to up the lead to 6-0
The Phillies (64-62), who won their fourth straight, were helped
by an uncharacteristic three errors by an Altoona team that came
in ranked as the second-best fielding team in the Eastern League
Fittingly, it was 'Christmas in August' night at FirstEnergy Stadium
The Phillies put up four runs in the eighth before the rain picked
up, suspending things with two out and the bases loaded
The Curve, who lost their fifth straight, fell to 64-61
Kip Bouknight (11-5) took the loss
Notes
Right-hander Gary Knotts was named Eastern League Pitcher of the
Week for his one-hit shutout effort Thursday against the Erie
SeaWolves - he struck out eight and walked two in the 7-0 decision
- he had pitched no-hit ball for 6.2 innings
Going into the fifth inning Monday, Curve starter Kip Bouknight
owned a 1.36 ERA in five appearances vs. the Phillies
Mike Costanzo was 3-for-4 with a walk
Greg Jacobs and Jason Hill had two hits apiece, Hill stroking
his 33rd double, which tied him with Jacobs for the team lead
The Phillies banged out 15 hits, getting at least one hit in each
inning
The Phillies have allowed three runs and 19 hits in their last
four games, all victories
They are 16-8 in their last 24 home games
The Curve lead the season series 8-7 - they have won it every
year since 2003
Monday's loss was just their sixth in the last 20 road games
Former Phillie Peter Bergeron led off and played center field
for the Curve - he signed with Pittsburgh as a minor league free
agent July 31
Play of the Day
Jason Delaney was thrown out at the plate on a double to the wall
in left-center by Javier Guzman in the second inning on a perfectly
executed 8-6-2 relay started by Greg Golson to Joey Hammond then
Jason Hill
The Curves recent offensive
struggles continued Monday night
Reading held a sloppy Altoona squad to just four hits in its 10-0
win at FirstEnergy Stadium as the Curve lost their fifth consecutive
game
Heavy rains stopped the game after eight innings
The R-Phils shelled reliever Jason Roach for six runs in just
1-1/3 innings to pad the margin
This lack of output came on the heels of the Curves dud
against Erie, when the SeaWolves held Altoona to only three hits
and one run in Saturdays doubleheader
Altoona has scored just one run in its past 24 innings
The loss continued the Curves freefall of late, as the team
is now 6-1/2 games behind Akron for the Southern Division wild
card spot and eight games behind first-place Erie
Fourth-place Reading closed to within just a half-game of Altoona
Reading starter Josh Outman (1-2) had the best start of his season
He held the Curve to four hits and five walks in eight shutout
innings
He also got it done from the plate, as the lefty went 3-for-4
with two RBIs
Outman laced a two-run double to chase Curve starter Kip Bouknight
and stake the R-Phils to a 4-0 lead
Bouknight, usually cool, calm and collected, was visibly frustrated
walking off the mound
Bouknight (11-5) allowed four runs - one of which was earned -
in 5-1/3 innings as the Curve defense failed to do its part
Javier Guzmans shoddy defense allowed Reading to take an
early 2-0 lead
Guzman failed to charge a slow-rolling groundball that led to
an infield single and later dropped a soft liner that led to two
unearned runs in the fifth inning
Greg Golsons double, which the Curve bullpen believed was
foul, scored the runs
Reading hammered Roach for seven hits, six runs and a 10-0 advantage
Significant scoring chances were minimal
Javier Guzman doubled in the second inning, but Jason Delaney
was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw
Delaney led off the seventh with a double but the Curve couldnt
bring him home
