Game Reports

Curve standouts Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker, the Pirates' top-rated minor league prospects,
were promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis following Thursday's game at Binghamton
Left-handed reliever Dave Davidson has also been promoted to Indy

McCutchen and Walker promoted to Triple-A

The Curve have announced that Pittsburgh Pirates' top-rated prospects, outfielder Andrew McCutchen and third baseman Neil Walker, have been promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis
Left-handed relief pitcher Dave Davidson, a member of the Pirates' 40-man roster, has also been promoted to Indy

The announcement was made following the Curve's 7-3 loss at Binghamton Thursday evening

All three players are expected to join Indianapolis for the finale of a two-game series in Durham on Friday evening
The Tribe will then remain in North Carolina to play a pair of games at Charlotte on Saturday and Sunday

McCutchen, 20, and Walker, 21, were rated by Baseball America as the Pirates' No. 1 and 2 prospects, respectively, entering the 2007 season
The duo opened the '07 campaign with Altoona after also finishing the 2006 season at the Double-A level
In fact, McCutchen and Walker were each promoted to Altoona for the first time on the same day last August (August 15)

McCutchen hit .258 with 10 home runs, 48 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 118 games this season for the Curve
After hitting just .233 (69-for-296) over the first three months of the season, McCutchen picked up the pace in July and August, posting a .307 average (46-for-150) in his final 41 Double-A games
He went 1-for-4 Thursday at Binghamton to extend his season-high on-base streak to 20 games

Walker, who made the conversion from catcher to third base this season, was one of the Eastern League's most consistent hitters, recording a .288 average with 13 home runs and 66 RBI in 117 games
He was selected to participate in the Eastern League All-Star Game and is a strong candidate to be named an E.L. post-season All-Star

Both players were first round draft selections of the Pirates after standout high school careers
Walker was the 11th overall pick in the 2004 Draft out of Pine-Richland High School in suburban Pittsburgh
McCutchen was taken one year later in the same slot out of Fort Meade High School in Florida

Davidson was the Pirates' 10th round selection in the 2002 draft out of high school in St. Catherine's, Ontario, making him the Bucs' highest-drafted Canadian-born player in history
The 23-year old lefty went 3-1 with two saves, a 4.22 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 59-2/3 innings over 39 games
Davidson limited Eastern League batters to just a .205 average against

The Curve are expected to announce additions to their 24-man active roster on Friday

Altoona will open a four-game series over three days against the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) Friday evening at Blair County Ballpark
Friday's first pitch is set for 7.05pm

The Curve and 'Wolves will also play a 5.35pm doubleheader on Saturday before concluding their series Sunday at 6.05pm

Altoona currently trails Erie by 4-1/2 games in the race for the wild-card spot in the Eastern League's Southern Division

Mulvey and Stewart pace Mets

Kevin Mulvey pitched eight solid innings and Caleb Stewart hit a three-run homer as host Binghamton defeated Altoona, 7-3, on Thursday

Mulvey (10-10), who was pounded for six runs on 10 hits over six innings in a loss to Bowie last Friday, yielded three runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts for his fourth victory in six decisions

Stewart capped a six-run sixth inning with his 15th homer and Enrique Cruz belted a solo shot, his fourth, for the Mets (52-69)

Altoona's Luis Munoz (10-5) was pounded for six runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 4-1/3 innings for his first loss in eight starts since June 15

Jason Bowers ripped an RBI triple and Neil Walker smacked a two-run single for the Curve

Binghamton scored six times in the fifth inning to break open a tie game
and went on to a 7-3 win over the Curve Thursday night

Curve end long road trip with 7-3 loss to Binghamton Mets

A six-run Binghamton fifth inning sunk the Curve in a 7-3 loss to the Mets in the deciding game of a three-game series Thursday evening at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY

Despite dropping two of three games to the B-Mets for the third time this season, Altoona (64-57) finishes its season-long nine-game road trip by winning six of nine games
The Curve swept Portland to open the trip and took two of three at New Hampshire last weekend

Altoona remains 4-1/2 games behind E.L. South wild-card leader Erie, which dropped a 7-0 decision at Reading Thursday

The loss wasn't the only bad news for the Curve Thursday
Following the game, third baseman Neil Walker, outfielder Andrew McCutchen and left-handed reliever Dave Davidson were promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis
The three players leave the Curve just one day before the club opens a pivotal four-game weekend series against Erie at Blair County Ballpark

Curve starter Luis Munoz (10-5) was handed the loss in his second appearance since returning from a two-start stint at Triple-A
The right-hander departed the game in the middle of Binghamton's six-run fifth inning and was charged with six runs on nine hits in just 4-1/3 innings

Meanwhile, B-Mets' righty Kevin Mulvey, one of the New York Mets' top-rated minor league pitchers, scattered seven Curve hits and three runs over eight innings to notch the win
Mulvey (10-10) walked two and fanned five to become the first Binghamton hurler this season to reach double-digit victories

Jason Bowers tripled in the top of the third to get the Curve on the board in the third inning, while Walker knocked in the other two Altoona runs with a single in his final at-bat with the club in the eighth

J.E. Cruz and Caleb Stewart each hit home runs in the Binghamton victory
Stewart's three-run shot plated half of the Mets' six runs in the fifth

The Curve return to Blair County Ballpark Friday evening to open their four-game weekend set against Erie
Friday's first pitch is set for 7.05pm
Left-hander Josh Shortslef (3-12, 4.52) will start for Altoona against SeaWolves' righty Dallas Trahern (11-6, 3.79)

McCutchen, Walker head to Triple-A
Curve returning home to face Erie in key series

The Pirates of the future are now the Curve of the past

The big question now is if Altoona’s playoff chances are a thing of the past

The Pirates promoted center fielder Andrew McCutchen and third baseman Neil Walker, their top two prospects, to Triple-A Indianapolis following the Curve’s 7-3 loss Thursday night at Binghamton

‘‘Any time you can move guys forward, I think it’s awesome’’ Curve manager Tim Leiper said
‘‘And especially these two guys because they’ve earned it’’

The club also lost another key member as left-handed reliever Dave Davidson got a call-up to Indy

It appears the promotions have come at the worst possible time for the Curve, who open a crucial four-game series with playoff implications tonight against Erie at Blair County Ballpark

Leiper, though, remains as optimistic as ever that his team can stay around in the postseason chase
‘‘We know we can do this’’ Leiper said
‘‘We’re going to be fine’’

McCutchen’s season got off to a dreadful beginning as he started 0-for-15 and hit just .189 in April
He was down to .178 on May 18, but the Pirates never thought about demoting him to Single-A
The prized prospect finally started figuring things out in late May and has been the player the organization expected ever since
He has batted .307 since July 1 to raise his average to .258 and has reached base in 20 consecutive games
McCutchen didn’t show as much power as some expected with only 10 homers - two inside the park - and he drove in 48 runs

‘‘The greatest thing about him is not just the statistical thing that he’s done, but the fact that he’s really come into his own as a leader on the team’’ Leiper said
‘‘Him and Walk both
They went from being just players on this team to leaders on this team’’

Walker enjoyed a stellar first half at the plate and at his new position
The former catcher handled the move to third base well and was batting .319 on June 16
Some fatigue set in, though, and Walker’s all-around play declined a bit
He leaves the Curve with a .288 average, 13 homers, 66 RBIs and 25 errors

‘‘I told them both there was going to be a room full of guys that are really happy for them, sincerely happy for them as people’’ Leiper said of the clubhouse reaction Thursday
‘‘Those guys really earned the respect of their teammates and their peers’’

Davidson, a member of the Pirates’ 40-man roster, has had an up-and-down season
He got off to a strong start, struggled in large part because of control problems, then turned the corner recently with 14 consecutive scoreless innings
The lefty departs with a 3-1 record and 4.22 ERA in 39 games

The Curve will receive outfielder Adam Boeve back from Indianapolis
Boeve has batted .295 with 14 homers and 47 RBIs for Altoona and .277 with four homers and six RBIs in Triple-A

Third baseman Russ Johnson also will come down from Indy
The 34-year-old has batted .272 with six homers and 43 RBIs in Triple-A

Pitcher Todd Redmond will rejoin the Curve from Single-A Lynchburg for a third time
Redmond is 7-9 with a 4.62 ERA for the Hillcats and 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in two starts for Altoona

The Curve missed a chance to gain ground on Erie as they suffered another disappointing loss to Binghamton
The last-place B-Mets won two of three in the series and six of nine overall against Altoona this season

Binghamton broke open a 1-1 game with six runs in the fifth inning against starter Luis Munoz and reliever Ronald Belisario

Munoz (10-5) gave up six runs for the loss, while Kevin Mulvey (10-10) earned the win

Walker had a two-run single in his final Curve at-bat in the eighth inning

Describing this weekend’s series against Erie, Leiper said ‘‘We’re in the middle of August, the finish line is there, we’re playing a team that’s ahead of us in the standings and it doesn’t get any better than this’’
