Game Reports

Brian Peterson (pictured) tripled to attempt to begin a Curve comeback in the ninth inning,
but ulimately a discouraging evening for Altoona ended with a 5-3 loss to the Binghamton Mets
at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY

Curve lose lead and ground in 5-3 defeat

Three walks by Kip Bouknight in the sixth inning doomed the Curve as Jamar Hill put the B-Mets ahead with a two-run single en route to a 5-3 series opening victory

Bouknight (11-4) was charged with all three runs scored by Binghamton in the sixth, although he left with the lead, relieved by Chris Hernandez
After Bouknight had walked the bases loaded with two outs, the Curve turned to Hernandez, who promptly permitted the two-run single to Hill to plate Miguel Negron and J.E. Cruz and put the B-Mets ahead 3-2
Mark Kiger scored on a Hernadez wild pitch to cap the rally and give Binghamton a 4-2 lead

Cruz, who replaced Wilson Batista after he was hit in the head by Bouknight in the fourth, homered to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning to cap the Binghamton scoring

Mike Carp got the B-Mets started with a solo home run in the first off of Bouknight for a 1-0 lead

But the Curve got some help in starting a rally to go-ahead in the third
B-Mets' starter Bobby Parnell (4-4) endured back-to-back defensive miscues to put Curve runners at first and third with nobody out
Vic Buttler laced a single to tie the game,
and Brett Roneberg's ground out scored Jason Bowers to put the Curve in front, 2-1

Peter Bergeron drove home Brian Peterson with a third Curve run in the ninth, but ultimately a night of opportunities went by the way-side for Altoona

The Curve had the leadoff man aboard in each of the last seven innings and only managed one earned run

The loss drops the Curve (63-56) into fourth place in the Southern Division behind the surging Bowie Baysox who won their seventh straight game to pull a game in front of Altoona

The Curve loss drops them to 2-5 against the last-place B-Mets on the year and also gives Binghamton the season series victory

The middle game of the three-game series will be contested on Wednesday night at 7.05pm
RHP Dewon Brazelton (3-3, 4.22) will make the start for the Curve against RHP Jose Sanchez (3-6, 4.10) for Binghamton

Hill’s big hit leads to B-Mets win

Jamar Hill hit a go-ahead two run single in the sixth, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 5-3 win over the Altoona Curve at NYSEG Stadium Tuesday

The victory ends Binghamton’s losing streak at four games

Binghamton (51-68) took a 1-0 lead on Mike Carp’s first-inning homer

However, Altoona (63-56) took advantage of a pair of B-Mets errors to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth, as Vic Buttler picked up an RBI single
and Brett Roneberg an RBI groundout

Those unearned runs would be all Bobby Parnell (4-4) would allow over seven innings

The B-Mets took advantage of Altoona starter Kip Bouknight in the sixth
The righthander walked Miguel Negron, Mike Carp and Mark Kiger to load the bases with two out before Hill’s single off reliever Chris Hernandez scored Negron and Carp
A Hernandez wild pitch brought in Kiger for a 4-2 B-Mets lead

J.E. Cruz led off the bottom of the eighth with a homer that put the B-Mets ahead 5-2

Altoona’s Brian Peterson began the ninth by tripling off Lino Urdaneta before scoring on Peter Bergeron’s sacrifice fly
Urdaneta was able to hold on for his second save in three chances

Wednesday, the Binghamton Mets play the second game of their three-game series against the Altoona Curve
Jose Sanchez (3-6, 4.10) will start for the B-Mets against Dewon Brazelton (3-3, 4.22) of Altoona
Game time is 7.05pm from NYSEG Stadium

Notes
Parnell tied a career high for the second straight start with seven innings of work, the sixth time he’s gone that deep in his career - he’s won three straight starts
Altoona had the leadoff man on in each of the last seven innings, scoring him twice
Bouknight had won his previous four starts

Pirates Farm Report

Altoona (Double-A, 63-56) lost, 5-3, at Binghamton (Mets)

Catcher Brian Peterson was 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored

Third baseman Neil Walker and left fielder Brett Roneberg each added two hits

Center fielder Andrew McCutchen was 1 for 4 with a double

Right-hander Kip Bouknight (11-4) allowed four runs on three hits in 5-2/3 innings

Hill, Mets topple Curve

Jamar Hill's two-run single keyed a three-run sixth inning that lifted host Binghamton over Altoona, 5-3, on Tuesday

The Mets (51-68) trailed, 2-1, in the sixth when they loaded the bases on three walks
After Chris Hernandez relieved starter Kip Bouknight (11-4), Hill delivered a single to left, plating two
Mark Kiger scored the inning's final run when Hernandez uncorked a wild pitch

Mike Carp smacked his seventh home run with the bases empty in the first and Enrique Cruz led off the eighth with his third homer for Binghamton

Robert Parnell (4-4) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one over seven innings

Lino Urdaneta gave up one run on four hits in two frames to post his second save

Vic Buttler, Brett Roneberg and Peter Bergeron each drove in a run for the Curve (63-56)

Bouknight surrendered four runs on three hits while fanning six and walking four over 5-2/3 innings

Curve hurt by walks

The pitcher who made a season-long habit of beating opponents helped beat himself Tuesday night
Kip Bouknight issued four walks and the Curve whiffed on plenty of chances in their 5-3 setback to Binghamton at NYSEG Stadium

The worst of Bouknight’s struggles came in the sixth inning, when the righty walked the bases full
Binghamton capitalized on the wildness after Bouknight was lifted, as Jamar Hill’s single off Chris Hernandez produced two runs for a 3-2 Binghamton lead
The third run of the inning crossed on Hernandez’s wild pitch for a 4-2 advantage as all three runs scored with two outs

Opportunities throughout the night went by the wayside
Altoona had the leadoff runner on board in the final seven innings but only two of those runners scored

The most glaring squandered opportunity came in the eighth
Singles by Neil Walker and Brett Roneberg put runners at first and second with no outs and the Curve trailing, 4-2
Jason Delaney bounced into a double play to erase that threat

Altoona also couldn’t capitalize on Andrew McCutchen’s leadoff double in the fourth inning

The only rally of the night was aided by back-to-back Binghamton fielding errors by B-Mets shortstop Wilson Batista and Hill, the right fielder
Vic Buttler’s single scored Bouknight
and Bowers came around on Roneberg’s groundout as Altoona took a 2-1 lead in the third inning

Altoona’s third run scored on Javier Guzman’s single that scored Brian Peterson in the ninth

The loss dropped the Curve out of third place, as Bowie topped Connecticut, but Altoona remained 4-1/2 games behind Erie following the SeaWolves’ loss to Reading

Bouknight (11-4) lasted 5-2/3 innings, allowing four runs on as many walks and three hits
The remarkably consistent Bouknight has given up four runs or more in only four of his 19 starts for the Curve

Binghamton starter Bobby Parnell (4-4) allowed two unearned runs in seven innings, while Lino Urdaneta earned his second save

Hill makes up for his error with 2-run hit

It didn't take long for Jamar Hill to find redemption
Three innings after committing a costly error in right field, Hill made up for it with one swing of his bat
His two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Binghamton Mets the lead for good in a 5-3 victory over the Altoona Curve in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium

"I drove in more than I let in" Hill said with a laugh
"That's always good"

Mike Carp and J.E. Cruz each hit solo home runs, and Bobby Parnell (4-4) won his third consecutive start with seven solid innings

The victory snaps a four-game losing streak for the B-Mets (51-68)

Hill's bases-loaded single off Altoona reliever Chris Hernandez was the centerpiece of a three-run sixth inning for the B-Mets

It also negated two errors that led to two Altoona runs in the third inning

"We got one clutch hit from Hill" B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras said

The B-Mets ran into trouble from start of the third inning
Curve starting pitcher Kip Bouknight (11-4) led off the inning with a ground ball that shortstop Wilson Batista misplayed for an error
The next hitter, Jason Bowers, hit a hard line drive right at Hill in right field
With Bouknight on the move, it looked like Hill would have an easy catch and throw to first for a double play
But the ball bounced off Hill's glove for the B-Mets second consecutive error, giving Altoona runners on the corners with nobody out
"I saw the pitcher take off, and right before the ball got to me I looked to see where the runner was, and the ball handcuffed me" Hill said
"I was thinking of the double play"
The errors proved costly - Vic Buttler singled in Bouknight, and
Brett Roneberg hit an RBI fielder's choice to give the Curve a 2-1 lead

"You've got to make those plays" Oliveras said

That inning was the only blemish for Parnell, who once again pitched well
He didn't allow an earned run, walked just one batter and struck out four over seven solid innings

"Errors are going to happen" Parnell said
"Ricky (Bones, the B-Mets pitching coach) and I have been working on taking a step back when guys get on base to assess the situation
It helps me stay focused
I know I can do it, I just have to take that extra second to remind myself that I can do it"

The B-Mets broke through in the sixth inning thanks to their patience
Miguel Negron, Carp and Mark Kiger all drew walks off Bouknight, giving the B-Mets bases loaded with two outs
Hill followed with a single to left field to give the team the lead
Kiger later scored on a wild pitch

"What was more of a key that allowed me to get those two runs in was everyone else going up there with a plan and getting on base" Hill said

Carp hit his seventh home run of the season in the first inning

Cruz added his third homer of the season in the ninth

Around the Horn
Batista left the game in the fourth inning after being hit in the head by a Bouknight pitch - Batista walked off the field and was replaced by Cruz
