Game Reports

Neil Walker (pictured) homered to highlight a four-run Curve first inning,
but New Hampshire rallied against Altoona starter Luis Munoz
and eventually won the series opener, 4-3 in 10 innings Friday evening in Manchester

Fisher Cats hand Curve an extra innings loss

Neil Walker connected for his first home run in 40 games to highlight a four-run first inning, but the Curve failed to hold the lead and dropped a 6-5, 10-inning decision to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Friday night in Manchester, New Hampshire

Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the tenth, Manny Mayorson singled home Ryan Klosterman from third base with the winning run as the Fisher Cats took the opener of a three-game weekend series
Klosterman had opened the New Hampshire threat by reaching on a throwing error charged to shortstop Brandon Chaves

Dave Davidson (3-1) gave up the winning run and was handed his first loss of the season
The left-hander entered the outing having tossed 13-2/3 scoreless innings over his previous seven appearances

The Curve, who swept the Portland Sea Dogs in a three-game series to open their season-long nine-game road trip, got off to a quick start against Fisher Cats' starter Kyle Yates
Walker followed back-to-back bunt singles by Peter Bergeron and Vic Buttler will a long three-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center field to give Altoona a 3-0 lead
Later in the frame, Javier Guzman knocked in the Curve's fourth run with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Andrew McCutchen

Altoona starter Luis Munoz was staked to the early 4-0 advantage, but gave up the lead after allowing three runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth on a two-run home run off the bat of ninth-place hitter Juan Peralta

In four innings of work, Munoz, who made his previous two starts for Triple-A Indianapolis, was charged with five runs and six hits

Trailing 5-4 into the top of the sixth, the Curve knotted the game when Brian Peterson singled home Brett Roneberg from second base

The game remained even into the tenth inning thanks to solid relief pitching from both sides
New Hampshire lefties Jesse Carlson and Jo Matumoto combined for four scoreless innings, while the Curve duo of Jason Roach (two innings) and Ronald Belisario (three innings) held the Fisher Cats off the board from the fifth through the ninth

The Curve offense pounded out 12 hits in the contest, including a pair each from Buttler, Walker, McCutchen and Peterson

The Curve (61-55) missed out on an opportunity to move a game closer to second-place Erie in the wild-card race in the E.L. South
The SeaWolves also lost their series opener Friday against Connecticut
Altoona remains 4-1/2 games behind Erie in the race for one of the Southern Division's two playoff spots

Altoona and New Hampshire will play the middle game of their three-game set Saturday evening at 7.05pm
The Curve will send left-hander Josh Shortslef (2-12, 4.79) to the mound against Fisher Cats' right-hander Ty Taubenheim

Mayorson singles in the winning run in the tenth innings
Fisher Cats improve to 11-4 in extra inning games

Manny Mayorson hit his second single of the game in the 10th inning to drive home Ryan Klosterman for the walk off win over the Altoona Curve, 6-5

The win moves the Fisher Cats within 2.5 games of the Portland Sea Dogs in the Eastern League's Northern Division for the final playoff spot

With the game tied 5-5 in the tenth, Klosterman reached on an error by Curve shortstop Brandon Chaves
He went to second on a passed ball
After Rob Cosby was intentionally walked, Mayorson (2-for-6) singled to right field off reliever Dave Davidson (3-1), the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game

Jo Matumoto (3-3), the third Fisher Cat pitcher, pitched a scoreless tenth inning to earn the win

Jesse Carlson worked three shutout innings, striking out five, and allowing just one hit

Altoona (61-55) opened a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of bunt singles and a three-run homer by 3B Neil Walker off starter Kyle Yates
They added a sacrifice fly by Javier Guzman in the initial frame

The Fisher Cats (60-58) scored three in the third inning on an RBI single by Juan Peralta and a two-RBI double for Ryan Patterson (3-for-5)

They went ahead on Peralta's two-run homer in the fourth inning off Curve starter Luis Munoz

Altoona had the tied game in the sixth inning
Brett Roneberg doubled and scored on a single by Brian Peterson (2-for-4)

Kyle Yates started and went six innings giving up nine hits, no walks and five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts

The Fisher Cats continue the three-game series against the Curve Saturday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium
Right-hander Ty Taubenheim (0-0, 0.00) takes the mound against Altoona left-hander Josh Shortslef (2-12, 4.79) at 7.05pm

Curve’s big lead falls by wayside

The Curve can’t afford to give away games like they did Friday night and expect to make the playoffs

Altoona scored four runs in the first inning and had one of its best pitchers, Luis Munoz, on the mound
The scenario looked promising, but the Curve went flat offensively and saw New Hampshire fight back for a 6-5 win in 10 innings

The Fisher Cats got to Munoz for three runs in the third inning and two in the fourth for a 5-4 lead

Altoona tied it in the sixth, and it stayed that way until the 10th

That’s when a couple of the Curve’s more reliable players faltered to let New Hampshire score the winning run

Reliever Dave Davidson came on in the 10th sporting a scoreless streak of 13-2/3 innings, the longest on the team this season
He struck out the first batter, then got a grounder to shortstop from Ryan Klosterman
Brandon Chaves, who leads all Eastern League shortstops in fielding percentage, threw wide of first base for an error

Another defensive miscue - a passed ball by catcher Brian Peterson - let Klosterman take second, and Davidson intentionally walked Rob Cosby
Manny Mayorson followed with a single to center that scored Klosterman with the game winner

Jo Matumoto (3-3) won in relief for New Hampshire, while Davidson (3-1) took the loss

Altoona had its three-game winning streak snapped and missed a chance to close ground on second-place Erie in the Southern Division playoff race
The SeaWolves lost to Connecticut and still lead the Curve by 4-1/2 games with 26 games remaining

Neil Walker hit a three-run homer in the first for Altoona, and Javier Guzman drove home a run on a sacrifice fly

The Curve tied it in the sixth on an RBI single by Peterson
