Brett Roneberg (pictured), who was activated off the Disabled List on Wednesday,
delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the seventh inning and that run stood up
as the game-winner in the Curve's 4-3 win at Portland Wednesday night

Roneberg delivers in his return to Curve

Brett Roneberg returned to the Curve lineup Wednesday evening and made an immediate impact in Altoona's narrow 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field in Portland

Roneberg, who had been out of action since June 24 with a strained right wrist, broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI double and that run stood up as the game-winner in the Curve's second consecutive win at Portland to open their season-long nine-game road trip

The Curve (60-54) entered the seventh trailing 3-2, but Portland third baseman Andrew Pinckney's throwing error on a ball hit by Neil Walker got Altoona started in the frame
Jason Delaney, playing in front of dozens of family and friends who made the short trip to Maine from his home state of Massachusetts, followed with a double to the left-center field gap off Portland reliever Kyle Jackson (4-7) to score Walker and even the game at 3-3
Andrew McCutchen followed with a single to left that advanced Delaney to third and set the stage for Roneberg's key hit down the right-field line, which gave Altoona its winning margin

Meanwhile, the Curve bullpen duo of Dave Davidson and Matt Peterson preserved the win for starter Kip Bouknight with a combined three scoreless innings

Davidson got out of a jam in the seventh by striking out three consecutive batters and Peterson stranded runners in scoring position in each of the final two frames, including the potential tying run at third base in the ninth, to pick up his 22nd save of the season

Bouknight (11-3) earned his team-leading 11th win of the season after allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings of work
The right-hander, who matched a season-high with seven strikeouts in the game, has won each of his four starts since returning to the Curve rotation from Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-July

Offensively, the Curve pounded out 13 hits in the win, including a 3-for-4 effort from Javier Guzman

Peter Bergeron was one of three players with a pair of hits in the victory, knocking in the first two Curve runs with singles in the second and fourth innings

The Curve win, coupled with Erie's 5-2 loss to New Britain on Wednesday, moves Altoona to within five games of the wild-card spot in the E.L. South

Portland (61-52) has lost back-to-back games after entering the series with a six-game winning streak

Altoona, which has now won 10 of its last 12 games on the road, will look to complete a series sweep in Portland on Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field
Dewon Brazelton (3-3, 3.51) will get the start for Altoona against Sea Dogs' lefty Tommy Hottovy (2-8, 5.46)
First pitch is set for noon

Sea Dogs beaten by an old friend - lose to Altoona 4-3

Former Sea Dog Brett Roneberg was activated from the disabled list before Wednesday’s game, after spending two months on DL with a sprained right wrist
The Curve outfielder made a splash in his return, knocking in the winning run with a double in the seventh inning

Portland couldn't hold an early 3-1 lead, losing 4-3 to Altoona on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field

The Sea Dogs have lost five straight at home, their longest losing streak at Hadlock Field in over two years

Portland didn't gain or lose any ground in the Northern Division standings as New Hampshire and Trenton both lost

Kip Bouknight (11-3) became the third Eastern League pitcher to reach 11 wins
The Curve righty worked six strong innings, allowing three runs, seven hits and fanning seven

Altoona's bullpen duo of Dave Davidson and Matt Peterson worked three scoreless innings to seal the win
Peterson picked up his 22nd save of the year, recording the final five outs

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jeff Natale led off the inning with an infield hit and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the shortstop
Chad Spann moved Natale to third base on a groundout but Peterson retired Keylor and Brown to end the game

Kyle Jackson (4-8) surrendered six hits over one and 1/3 innings to take the loss for Portland

Altoona tied the game in the seventh inning on Jason Delaney's RBI double, scoring Neil Walker, who reached on an error by third baseman Andrew Pinckney

Chris Smith took the no-decision for Portland, falling behind 1-0 on Peter Bergeron's second inning single
Smith pitched five innings, yielding two runs and seven hits

Portland came right back in their half of the second to score three runs off Bouknight
Andrew Pinckney tied the game with a run-scoring double
Iggy Suarez knocked in the go-ahead run with a ground out and Zach Borowiak added an RBI single

The two team's 7 thru 9 hitters combined to go 14-for-24 (.583) with 5 RBI
Borowiak went 4-for-4 from the number nine spot

Suarez extended his hitting streak to six games with two hits

Portland will try to salvage the series finale on Thursday afternoon against Altoona - game time is 12.00pm

Allied Home Mortgage Big Dog of the Game - Zach Borowiak and Barry Hertzler

Notes

Roneberg returns to lift Curve

This has been a tough season for Brett Roneberg, the 2006 Curve MVP, but he has four weeks left to try and make his mark with this year’s club

Roneberg began the process Wednesday night, doubling home the winning run in Altoona’s 4-3 victory over Portland at Hadlock Field

The Curve trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning before rallying to post their 10th win in the past 12 road games
Altoona also improved to six games over .500, matching a season high

Roneberg, who has battled a wrist injury much of the season, played his first game since June 24
He delivered numerous clutch hits during his stellar 2006 campaign, but the veteran outfielder entered Wednesday’s game batting just .227

The Curve gave Roneberg a chance to be the hero by putting together a rally in the seventh
Neil Walker reached on an error and scored the tying run on Jason Delaney’s double to left-center
Roneberg followed with a double to right, bringing home Delaney with the decisive run

Curve starter Kip Bouknight (11-3) worked six solid innings and matched his season high with seven strikeouts in earning the win
Bouknight allowed three runs in the second inning but shut down the Sea Dogs after that

Dave Davidson worked a scoreless seventh but allowed two baserunners with one out in the eighth
Curve manager Tim Leiper called on closer Matt Peterson, who escaped that jam and finished it off in the ninth for his 22nd save

Kyle Jackson (4-7) took the loss in relief for Portland

Javier Guzman went 3-for-5 to pace Altoona’s 13-hit attack

Vic Buttler, Brian Peterson and Peter Bergeron each added two hits

Erie lost to New Britain on Wednesday, so the Curve are within five games of the SeaWolves for the Southern Division’s final playoff spot
