Brett back on the Disabled List - Monday 25th June 2007

A note from Brett on Sunday 24th June 2007
I know things haven't been going really well lately - and I am afraid it just got a little worse!!
I have hurt my hand again and I am going back on the Disabled List again tomorrow
I am pretty sure of this because I told Tim Leiper I couldn't swing
and that it will take some time just like before
I am very disappointed just as I am sure that you all are
There is nothing I can do now besides trying to rehab as best I can
and get healthy as quickly as possible
I feel like crap over here right now and might just go see a movie tonight to kill some time
and get my mind off of it all
But tomorrow I will be good again and do all I can to get better!!

A note from Brett on Tuesday 26th June 2007
Well, here we are again
I have been to the doctor again today and got an MRI like I did with my shoulder
It hurt a lot more this time when they put the dye in - and I about went through the roof!
Got the reading 'sort of' back tonight
The assistant read it and said it was a deep bone bruise and it should heel to 100% over time
Not sure how long that is just yet
I find out the final reading tomorrow but it should be okay
The bruise is in the same place where I broke it in January
Sucks!!
I am now going to go into rehab and I think I am staying here to do it
and I just hope it doesn't take too long
Also there are two more outfielders coming tomorrow
I have to talk to Brian Graham in the next few days about what they want me to do
I honestly am not sure about my playing time when I do come back
but we'll cross the bridge when we come to it
Just an update and I will be back online tomorrow

A note from Brett on Thursday 28th June 2007
No news yet - and I am going to take that as good news!!
The doctor didn't call or come bye yesterday so I will say that makes me feel a little better!!
Hope to hear officially today and I will email or call then

A note from Brett on Saturday 7th July 2007
With the hand, I have a doctor's appointment the first day after the All Star Game break
which is 10th and 11th July
I might get a pain killing injection if I need it - but it does feel a lot better
I have been doing a small range of motion exercises and it's improving
So hopefully after five more days I may even get to start swinging!!
I want to be ready and then have six weeks to finish the season
That is my ideal situation

A note from Brett on Thursday 12th July 2007
There isn't any really bad news - more so just news - not good or bad
The first MRI I had two weeks ago was done incorrectly, so I found out today
What they did see on the first one was two bone bruises but no definitive answer on the ligaments
So I am now having what's called a three injection arthrogram
They put dye in three different areas to see if there are any leaks
Had the first one today and I then have two more Monday
Then an appointment after them on Monday with the hand specialist
Hope it's good news!
As for now, there is no chance of playing til at least the first on the month in my mind
And with our lineup how it is right now, I don't know if I will play when healthy anyway
Not what I wanted to hear, but there isn't much I can do right now
except push my good news date back to Monday and just hope!

The audio file opposite/below includes
two segments from the Game Day Show

PART ONE

Manager Tim Leiper discusses Brett's situation
He says he would like to see him back in the
lineup, and that he "feels bad for the guy"
He also mentions his great work as the
First Base Coach during the recent games

PART TWO
During the Curve Injury Report,
the commentator mentions that Brett is
an important part of the Curve lineup,
but there is no timetable for his return

NOTE - Tim Leiper speaks 'a little fast' and is a bit
difficult to understand - the rest of the tape,
including the Injury Report, is very clear

A note from Brett on Wednesday 18th July 2007
Is all good!
Every scan I have had has said that it's all okay and that I am okay to resume activity
I will start small and slow and hope to progress to swinging in about a week or so
The doctor said it is going to hurt - probably a lot - but it's not doing further damage
so try to swing through it
He is going to give me some painkillers and I am going to go from there
If after two to three weeks of trying to play and it's still being sore,
I will go to Pittsburgh to see another hand specialist for a second opinion
But as for today, I am starting to do things!!
About bloody time, huh!!

A note from Brett on Monday 23rd July 2007
Well, today went really good
A lot better than I thought it was going to be
I had fifteen dry swings with a fungo bat
and surprisingly had zero pain or discomfort
I also got to play catch as well
It all went really well!!
I am not sure of my plans tomorrow
but I am sure it will be a little more than today
Not bad for a start!!

A note from Brett on Thursday 26th July 2007
Tuesday I swung a fungo twenty times - with no problems
Wednesday I swung the fungo fifteen times and then a timber bat also fifteen times
and again, no worries at all
Today I am a little achy but I have to deal with a few niggles for a little while
I am not sure what my plan is for today but tomorrow I am hitting off the tee

A note from Brett on Saturday 28th July 2007
The last few days have been good for my hand
But my return to the roster has been pushed back to the first game in Portland,
which is on Tuesday 7th August
So I hope if all goes well, I will be in there then
Swinging a lot lately and it feels good - a lot better than I thought it was going to be

A note from Brett on Tuesday 31st July 2007
Coming off the Disabled List
I was pushed up to be activated on Wednesday 1st August
But then we got another player that they weren't sure if they were getting
Hopefully they will activate me soon!!
I am not sure what is going to happen - but I hope I get in there asap!!

Game Reports

Andrew McCutchen (pictured) homered and was one of four Curve hitters with three hits
as Altoona pounded out 16 hits and beat New Hampshire, 7-3, to level their three-game series
at a game apiece on Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark

Curve level series with a barrage of hits

The Curve had four different batters with three hits apiece as they pounded out 16 hits and beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-3, to level their three-game series at Blair County Ballpark on Saturday night

Curve starter Todd Redmond gave the Altoona offense a chance to get on-track as he mowed down the first nine Fisher Cats he faced

The Curve used that opening to jump to the lead in the bottom of the third
With one out, Peter Bergeron singled off of Fisher Cats' starter Kyle Yates to get the Curve started
A batter later, Vic Buttler singled to put two aboard and Neil Walker followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 Altoona lead
The inning should have ended as Jason Delaney bounced a ball to second base, but Manny Mayorson misplayed it to allow Buttler to score and the inning to continue
Andrew McCutchen followed with an RBI single and the Curve led 3-0

The Curve got back after Yates in the fourth
Brandon Chaves led off the inning with a single, which was followed by Bergeron's second single of the ballgame to put two aboard
Jason Bowers brought Chaves in with a single and the Curve led 4-0

The Fisher Cats finally got something going against Redmond in the fifth as Erik Kratz doubled home Chip Cannon to put New Hampshire on the board for the first time

The response came quickly from the Curve in the bottom of the inning, as McCutchen led off with a solo home run to give the Curve back their four-run lead

The Fisher Cats closed to 5-2 as Dustin Majewski singled to score Rob Cosby

The hit also chased Redmond from the ballgame
Redmond (1-0) earned the win however, working 6-1/3 innings and striking out six to win for the first time at the double-A level

The Curve put the game away in the eighth off of Fisher Cats' reliever Matt Roney
Buttler and Walker each supplied RBI singles as the Curve took a 7-2 lead

The Fisher Cats capped the scoring with a run off of Wardell Starling in the ninth, but Chris Hernandez came on to nail down the win, striking out two batters to end the ballgame and earn his fourth save of the season

Yates (6-7) took the loss for New Hampshire
The three-game series will be decided on Sunday night at 6.05pm

LHP Josh Shortslef will make the start for Altoona against LHP Eric Fowler for the Fisher Cats

Majewski has two hits and two RBI's in Fisher Cats 7-3 loss to Altoona
David Smith extends season-high hitting streak to 8 games with 9th inning double

Dustin Majewski drove in two runs with a pair of singles, and David Smith doubled in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-best eight games, but the Altoona Curve defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-3, Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark

Altoona (58-53) had 16 hits, but only one went for extra bases - Andrew McCutchen’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Kyle Yates
McCutchen’s eighth home run was the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game, clearing the wall in left-centerfield to stake the Curve to a 5-1 lead

Yates (6-7) went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs - three earned - on 11 hits to suffer his fifth loss in his last six decisions
The right-hander struck out one and walked three

Right-hander Todd Redmond (1-0), making his second career Eastern League start, held New Hampshire (57-56) to two runs on five hits in 6.1 innings to notch the victory
He struck out a season-high seven batters and walked one

Chris Hernandez struck out Erik Kratz and Ryan Klosterman with runners on the corners in the ninth inning to register his fourth save in six chances

Majewski (2-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in Rob Cosby (2-for-4, 2B, R), who doubled, in the seventh inning with a single to centerfield off Redmond, cutting the Curve’s lead to 5-2

Majewski also singled home Smith (1-for-4, 2B, R), who doubled, in the ninth inning against Altoona reliever Wardell Starling, trimming the Altoona advantage to 7-3

Kratz (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) had an RBI double in the fifth inning that scored Chip Cannon (1-for-3, R, BB), who singled and advanced to second on a Redmond wild pitch
That cut the Curve’s lead to 4-1

The Curve scored three runs - two unearned - in the bottom of the third inning to jump ahead, 3-0
Neil Walker (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, R) blooped a single to right field, scoring Peter Bergeron (3-for-4, 2 R, SB) from third base
Vic Buttler (3-for-4, R, RBI, SB, SAC) scored when Manny Mayorson misplayed Jason Delaney’s grounder, making it 2-0
Then McCutchen (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, R) followed with a line drive single to right, allowing Walker to score the second unearned run of the inning

Jason Bowers (1-for-5, RBI, R) drove in Brandon Chaves (2-for-4, R, SB) with a fourth inning single, giving Altoona a 5-1 lead

Butler and Walker added RBI singles in the Curve’s two-run eighth inning, which made it 7-2

With the loss, New Hampshire falls 4-1/2 games behind second place Portland in the Eastern League’s Northern Division playoff race
The Sea Dogs pounded the Harrisburg Senators, 18-7, for their fifth straight victory Saturday night in Harrisburg

The Fisher Cats will attempt to win the rubber game of the three-game set in Altoona Sunday night at 6.05pm when left-hander Eric Fowler (3-4, 7.39) takes the mound against Altoona left-hander Josh Shortslef (2-11, 4.83)

Todd Redmond fires a pitch

Curve’s Redmond sets tone

Todd Redmond, by all accounts, enjoyed a quality Double-A debut six weeks ago
His Blair County Ballpark debut was even better
Redmond controlled throughout in keying the Curve’s 7-3 win over New Hampshire on Saturday before 8,066 fans

The righty, ranked Pittsburgh’s ninth-best prospect, fanned seven in 6-1/3 innings
He allowed five hits, two of which came in his final inning, and two runs

The tone was set from the get-go with a swift 1-2-3 first inning
‘‘Very impressive’’ manager Tim Leiper said
‘‘The way he breezes through the first inning, that was as impressive a first inning as we’ve had all year
He set an unbelievable tone for us tonight
What he did was phenomenal’’

The first inning was followed by Redmond striking out the side in the second

He displayed with frequency the changeup that Baseball America graded as the best in the Pirates’ organization

‘‘I felt definitely it was one of my better games’’ Redmond said
‘‘I was able to make my pitches when I wanted to make a pitch’’

Redmond (1-0) made a spot start June 20 at Erie, where he came away with a no-decision despite limiting the SeaWolves to one run on four hits in five innings
‘‘You always get the first game jitters out’’ Redmond said
‘‘It was definitely a lot easier to come out here and pitch like I did’’

In the seven starts Redmond made between his Double-A debuts, he had a 2-4 record and 5.98 ERA for Single-A Lynchburg
‘‘It wasn’t nearly that bad’’ Redmond said
‘‘I missed my pitches, but it was luck of the draw’’

Altoona added plenty of hitting to supplement Redmond’s efforts, tagging the Fisher Cats for 16 hits
New Hampshire starter Kyle Yates was the primary contributor, as Yates (6-7) was battered for 11 hits in 4-2/3 innings

Neil Walker’s flare down the right-field line started the scoring in the third inning, and Andrew McCutchen’s single ended it as the Curve took a 3-0 lead
All of the runs scored with two outs

‘‘It probably was good for Redmond to have some run support so he can go out there and calm down’’ McCutchen said
‘‘Coming up here for a spot start, it’s good for him
He looked very comfortable on the mound’’

Walker looked as comfortable as he has in some time, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs
He entered the night on a 1-for-24 skid
‘‘I felt I’ve taken the same approach through this whole kind of slump, and Saturday was the night where, hopefully, I got out of it’’ he said

McCutchen, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a solo homer
His eighth long ball of the year gave the Curve a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning
He’s batting .361 (13-for-36) over his past 10 games

‘‘Every hitter’s going to have to go through adjustments, and I believe this season I went through it’’ McCutchen said
‘‘That was the biggest thing, learning where I need to be at and changing my approach
I’m sticking with it now, and it just has to show on the field’’

What showed on the field Saturday night was top-to-bottom contributions from the Curve lineup
Vic Buttler, Peter Bergeron, Walker and McCutchen all had three hits
Brandon Chaves and Bergeron, the bottom two in Altoona’s order, combined to go 5-for-8 with three runs scored

‘‘This team seems like it’s a couple different guys every single night’’ Walker said
‘‘It’s not just one or two guys getting hits
It’s a collective deal’’

Chris Hernandez earned his fourth save of the season in dominating fashion by stranding two runners put on board by Wardell Starling
Hernandez fanned Erik Kratz and Ryan Klosterman on seven pitches

Starling made his first appearance since July 25
He allowed three hits and one run in 1/3 of an inning

Other than that, it was a night full of bright spots for Leiper
Erie lost, leaving the Curve five games out of a playoff spot

‘‘We did everything right tonight’’ Leiper said
