Brett back on the Disabled List - Monday 25th June 2007

A note from Brett on Sunday 24th June 2007
I know things haven't been going really well lately - and I am afraid it just got a little worse!!
I have hurt my hand again and I am going back on the Disabled List again tomorrow
I am pretty sure of this because I told Tim Leiper I couldn't swing
and that it will take some time just like before
I am very disappointed just as I am sure that you all are
There is nothing I can do now besides trying to rehab as best I can
and get healthy as quickly as possible
I feel like crap over here right now and might just go see a movie tonight to kill some time
and get my mind off of it all
But tomorrow I will be good again and do all I can to get better!!

A note from Brett on Tuesday 26th June 2007
Well, here we are again
I have been to the doctor again today and got an MRI like I did with my shoulder
It hurt a lot more this time when they put the dye in - and I about went through the roof!
Got the reading 'sort of' back tonight
The assistant read it and said it was a deep bone bruise and it should heel to 100% over time
Not sure how long that is just yet
I find out the final reading tomorrow but it should be okay
The bruise is in the same place where I broke it in January
Sucks!!
I am now going to go into rehab and I think I am staying here to do it
and I just hope it doesn't take too long
Also there are two more outfielders coming tomorrow
I have to talk to Brian Graham in the next few days about what they want me to do
I honestly am not sure about my playing time when I do come back
but we'll cross the bridge when we come to it
Just an update and I will be back online tomorrow

A note from Brett on Thursday 28th June 2007
No news yet - and I am going to take that as good news!!
The doctor didn't call or come bye yesterday so I will say that makes me feel a little better!!
Hope to hear officially today and I will email or call then

A note from Brett on Saturday 7th July 2007
With the hand, I have a doctor's appointment the first day after the All Star Game break
which is 10th and 11th July
I might get a pain killing injection if I need it - but it does feel a lot better
I have been doing a small range of motion exercises and it's improving
So hopefully after five more days I may even get to start swinging!!
I want to be ready and then have six weeks to finish the season
That is my ideal situation

A note from Brett on Thursday 12th July 2007
There isn't any really bad news - more so just news - not good or bad
The first MRI I had two weeks ago was done incorrectly, so I found out today
What they did see on the first one was two bone bruises but no definitive answer on the ligaments
So I am now having what's called a three injection arthrogram
They put dye in three different areas to see if there are any leaks
Had the first one today and I then have two more Monday
Then an appointment after them on Monday with the hand specialist
Hope it's good news!
As for now, there is no chance of playing til at least the first on the month in my mind
And with our lineup how it is right now, I don't know if I will play when healthy anyway
Not what I wanted to hear, but there isn't much I can do right now
except push my good news date back to Monday and just hope!

PART ONE

He says he would like to see him back in the
lineup, and that he "feels bad for the guy"
He also mentions his great work as the
First Base Coach during the recent games

PART TWO
During the Curve Injury Report,
the commentator mentions that Brett is
an important part of the Curve lineup,
but there is no timetable for his return

NOTE - Tim Leiper speaks 'a little fast' and is a bit
difficult to understand - the rest of the tape,
including the Injury Report, is very clear

A note from Brett on Wednesday 18th July 2007
Is all good!
Every scan I have had has said that it's all okay and that I am okay to resume activity
I will start small and slow and hope to progress to swinging in about a week or so
The doctor said it is going to hurt - probably a lot - but it's not doing further damage
so try to swing through it
He is going to give me some painkillers and I am going to go from there
If after two to three weeks of trying to play and it's still being sore,
I will go to Pittsburgh to see another hand specialist for a second opinion
But as for today, I am starting to do things!!
About bloody time, huh!!

A note from Brett on Monday 23rd July 2007
Well, today went really good
A lot better than I thought it was going to be
I had fifteen dry swings with a fungo bat
and surprisingly had zero pain or discomfort
I also got to play catch as well
It all went really well!!
I am not sure of my plans tomorrow
but I am sure it will be a little more than today
Not bad for a start!!

A note from Brett on Thursday 26th July 2007
Tuesday I swung a fungo twenty times - with no problems
Wednesday I swung the fungo fifteen times and then a timber bat also fifteen times
and again, no worries at all
Today I am a little achy but I have to deal with a few niggles for a little while
I am not sure what my plan is for today but tomorrow I am hitting off the tee

A note from Brett on Saturday 28th July 2007
The last few days have been good for my hand
But my return to the roster has been pushed back to the first game in Portland,
which is on Tuesday 7th August
So I hope if all goes well, I will be in there then
Swinging a lot lately and it feels good - a lot better than I thought it was going to be

A note from Brett on Tuesday 31st July 2007
Coming off the Disabled List
I was pushed up to be activated on Wednesday 1st August
But then we got another player that they weren't sure if they were getting
Hopefully they will activate me soon!!
I am not sure what is going to happen - but I hope I get in there asap!!

Game Reports

Kip Bouknight (pictured) allowed only one run over a season-high 8-1/3 innings to lift the
Curve to a 5-1 win over the Reading Phillies Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark
The Curve and R-Phils finished their four-game series with two wins apiece

Bouknight's beauty earns Curve a 5-1 win

Kip Bouknight allowed only one run over a season-high 8-1/3 innings to earn his tenth win of the season and help the Curve earn a series split against the Reading Phillies with a 5-1 win Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark

Bouknight (10-3) became just the second Altoona starter this season to work into the ninth inning and went on to earn his third consecutive win since returning to the Curve from Triple-A Indianapolis on July 21

Luis Munoz's 8-2/3 inning effort against Bowie on April 25th is the only longer outing turned in by a Curve starter this season

The 28-year old Bouknight gave up a run in the top of the first inning before settling in the rest of the night
He scattered seven hits and gave up his only two walks in the ninth before leaving the game in favor of closer Matt Peterson

Peterson earned his 21st save of the season after enducing Hector Made into a game-ending double play

Offensively, a three-run bottom of the first provided plenty of early run support for Bouknight
With the bases loaded and two outs against Reading starter Gary Knotts, Alex Fernandez delivered a two-run single to left to give Altoona a 2-1 lead
Brian Peterson followed with an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game

Peterson later added his second RBI of the night and capped the Curve scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth - his second longball of the season

Knotts (0-1) took the loss in his debut with the Phillies, allowing four unearned runs over six innings
Knotts was making his return to affiliated baseball after opening the season with Newark of the independent Atlantic League

In addition to a two-hit game from Peterson, Fernandez, Taber Lee and Brandon Chaves also added a pair of hits for Altoona

Andrew McCutchen went hitless in four plate appearances to end his season-high seven-game hitting streak

The Curve will continue their homestand Friday night with the opener of a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays)

Friday's first pitch is set for 7.05pm

The pitching matchup for the series opener will feature Altoona right-hander Dewon Brazelton (3-3, 3.83) against New Hampshire lefty Eric Fowler (3-4, 7.39)

---Jason Hill hit a two-out RBI single in the first innings

Altoona 5 and Reading 1

The Altoona Curve defeated the Reading Phillies 5-1 Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark to split a four-game Eastern League series

The Phillies (57-55) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single by Jason Hill

The Curve (57-52) answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first
Alex Fernandez put Altoona in the lead with a two-out, two-run single and Brian Peterson followed with an RBI hit

Taber Lee added a run-scoring single in the seventh for the Curve and Peterson slammed a solo homer in the eighth

Kip Bouknight (10-3) allowed the lone run in 8-1/3 innings to get the win
He walked two in the ninth and gave way to Matt Peterson who recorded the final two outs for his 21st save

Former big-leaguer Gary Knotts (0-1) took the loss in his Reading debut
In six innings, Knotts was charged with four runs, all of them unearned

The Phillies made two errors in the game

The Curve’s Taber Lee and Vic Buttler
congratulate each other after scoring in Altoona’s win Thursday

Fans appreciate Bouknight’s effort

As Curve manager Tim Leiper walked out to the mound to pull Kip Bouknight, he wondered what kind of ovation his starter would get
The 3,721 fans on hand responded in kind, giving Bouknight a well-deserved warm reception as he came off the field to applause and several hundred standing fans
Bouknight pitched into the ninth inning, and Altoona received significant contributions from role players Taber Lee and Alex Fernandez, in a 5-1 win over Reading on Thursday at Blair County Ballpark

‘‘He sure as heck earned it’’ Leiper said of the reaction Bouknight received

Bouknight threw 8-1/3 innings and held the R-Phils to just seven hits and one run

The crowd’s gesture wasn’t lost on him, as he acknowledged the fans twice heading back to the dugout
‘‘It’s very nice’’ Bouknight said
‘‘Obviously, they appreciate good baseball’’

Lee and Fernandez each did their part
The duo combined to go 4-for-7 and drove in three runs

‘‘We’re in the lineup to give guys days off’’ said Lee, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI
‘‘We’ve got guys that play every day
When we’ve got our chance, we’ve got to do something about it’’

Fernandez set the tone early with a clutch two-out single in the first inning, which looked ominous after a promising start
Altoona loaded the bases with no outs, but consecutive strikeouts by Jason Delaney and Andrew McCutchen left it up to Fernandez
He didn’t disappoint, lining Gary Knotts’ first-pitch fastball to left-center for a vital 2-0 lead

‘‘Gigantic’’ Leiper said of the hit

‘‘Thursday was my chance’’ Fernandez said
‘‘Bases loaded, thank God I came through’’

Brian Peterson, who later homered, followed with another RBI single as the Curve took a 3-0 lead after the first inning

‘‘We took the momentum right back’’ Leiper said
‘‘It really could have went back in Reading’s favor
Not only did we grab it right back, it also deflated them a little bit’’

Lee, who spelled Jason Bowers, added an RBI single in the seventh for a 4-1 lead

Fernandez has been playing more lately with Delaney’s move to first

‘‘These guys all need to play down the stretch’’ Leiper said
‘‘I’ve probably been guilty of running these guys down a little bit
We’re going to need all 24 of us to win this thing’’

Knotts (0-1), a lefty making his debut after being signed out of Newark in the independent Atlantic League, gave up four unearned runs on eight hits in six innings

‘‘We didn’t know much about him’’ Fernandez said
‘‘When you don’t know much about a pitcher, you just look for something and swing the bat’’

Lee called the approach ‘‘see ball, hit ball’’

Reading wasn’t able to do much swinging the bats against an aggressive Bouknight
Bouknight (10-3) didn’t walk a hitter until the ninth inning, and the R-Phils had only one runner in scoring position through the first eight innings

McCutchen led a Curve defense that shined
The center fielder ran down five fly balls, but his gem came in the sixth inning
He sprinted in to make a diving catch on Jason Hill’s sinking liner
If McCutchen hadn’t made the catch, Reading would have drawn within 3-2

‘‘We had some amazing plays Thursday defensively’’ Bouknight said before rattling off the contributors
‘‘McCutchen was amazing in center, the infield made every single groundball play there was, Peterson called a great game’’

Bouknight and closer Matt Peterson combined to induce three double plays, none more important than Hector Made’s game-ender with the bases loaded

Peterson got the final two outs for his 21st save

Altoona managed to split the four-game series after being swept in Wednesday’s doubleheader

Akron and Erie both won on Thursday, leaving the Curve six games out of a playoff spot

‘‘We’ve got to win every game we can’’ Leiper said
‘‘It doesn’t matter when, how, why, whatever
We just need to win
This is August
This is where men are made’’
