The Curve erupted for five runs in the top
of the first inning and three more in the second and used that
early offensive outburst to cruise to a 10-5 win over the first-place
Akron Aeros in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night
at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio
Steven Pearce, who entered Thursday's contest as the Eastern League's
leading hitter with a .332 average, started the Curve's scoring
in the first inning by rocketing a two-run home run over the left-field
wall
The longball was Pearce's 13th with the Curve and his 24th combined
between Class-A Lynchburg and Altoona
Pearce went on to record two more RBI's in the contest to give
him 70 in a Curve uniform, which is the second-most among all
Eastern League hitters
Javier Guzman recorded a two-run double and Brian Peterson knocked
him in with an RBI single to complete the Curve's five-run first
Altoona then posted three more runs in the top of the second on
a two-run triple by Neil Walker and a sacrifice fly by Pearce
- the third of his four RBI's on the night
Pitching with a huge lead all game long, Curve starter Yoslan
Herrera (6-5) easily earned his sixth win of the season
The Cuban-born right-hander went a season-long 6-2/3 innings in
the contest and allowed three runs on 10 hits
Since opening the season with an 0-4 record and 6.47 ERA in 10
starts, Herrera is 6-1 with a 2.42 ERA (44.2 IP/12 ER) over his
last eight outings
Akron starter Shawn Nottingham (7-9) was saddled with all 10 Altoona
runs over 5-1/3 innings of work to take the loss
Jason Delaney kept a pair of lengthy streaks alive against the
Aeros, extending his hitting streak to 13 straight games - the
longest by any Curve hitter this season - and his franchise-record
RBI streak to 12 consecutive games
Despite the win, Altoona (53-49) remains 4-1/2 games behind second-place
Erie in wild card race in the E.L. South
The SeaWolves defeated last-place Harrisburg Thursday evening
in Erie
With the loss, Akron (60-45) is now just one game ahead of the
SeaWolves in the race for the division's top spot
The Curve and Aeros will play the second game of their four-game
series Friday evening at 7.05pm
Curve right-hander Kip Bouknight (8-3, 3.71) will oppose Akron
lefty Chuck Lofgren (9-4, 4.15) in Friday's mound matchup
The Akron Aeros fell to the Altoona Curve in
the first game of a four game series 10-5 on Thursday night
The Curve came out of the gates swinging in the first inning and
never looked back
Shawn Nottingham gave up five runs on six hits in the first and
allowed three more runs on three hits in the second inning
Nottingham calmed down for the remainder of his outing, pitching
5.1 innings
Turning the game over to T.J. Burton in the sixth, he left with
two men on and they both came around to score
Nottingham ended the evening with ten earned runs on ten hits,
three strikeouts, three walks, and a home run, picking up his
ninth loss of the season
Yoslan Herrera got the win, moving his record to 6-5 on the year
He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on ten hits,
striking out three
The Aeros put two on the board in the second as Wyatt Toregas
scored Chris Gimenez on a single and Brandon Pinckney hit a sacrifice
fly to bring Toregas home
Asdrubal Cabrera hit a single to score Trevor Crowe in the seventh
while Gimenez hit a two-run shot in the eighth to end the scoring
on the night, making the final 10-5
Brian Barton ended a 12 game hitting streak, going 0-4 on the
night
During his streak he batted .380 with seven runs scored, four
doubles, 11 RBI, two home runs, three walks and a stolen base
Pitching tomorrow is Akrons ace, southpaw Chuck Lofgren
He has a 9-5 record with a 4.15 ERA, leading the team with 95
strikeouts on the year
Right hander Kip Bouknight will take the mound for the Curve with
an 8-3 record and a 3.71 ERA
The Curves potent offense came through
in a big way Thursday
Steven Pearce once again led the charge with four RBIs in Altoonas
10-5 win over Akron at Canal Park
Pearce started a huge five-run first inning with a two-run homer
as the Curve jumped on the Aeros early
Javier Guzman brought home two more with a double, and Brian Peterson
singled in the fifth run of the inning off Aeros starter Shawn
Nottingham
All five runs scored with two outs
The Curve werent finished off Nottingham, who was pounded
for all 10 runs
Neil Walkers triple in the second inning scored two runs,
and Pearce added an RBI sacrifice fly as the Curve erupted for
an 8-0 lead
It was more than enough support for Curve starter Yoslan Herrera,
who continued his string of strong starts
Herrera (6-5) lasted 6-2/3 innings, the most hes thrown
all season, and has allowed three runs or fewer in his past eight
outings
He has won all of his starts and has a 2.42 ERA during that span
The righty worked around 10 hits, all singles
Jason Delaney, who recorded an RBI in his 12th consecutive game,
and Pearce added RBI singles in the sixth inning to close the
books on Nottingham
Nottingham (7-9) was lit up for 10 hits in 5-1/3 innings
The Curve finished the night with 12 hits and every starter had
at least one
The offense has scored 10 runs or more five times since July 15
and is averaging 6.8 runs in its past 13 games
Akron cut the deficit in half with Chris Gimenezs two-run
homer off Ronald Belisario in the eighth that made the score 10-5
The blast was the first Belisario has allowed since joining the
Curve two weeks ago
Chris Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance
since Saturday
