Brett back on the Disabled List - Monday 25th June 2007

A note from Brett on Sunday 24th June 2007
I know things haven't been going really well lately - and I am afraid it just got a little worse!!
I have hurt my hand again and I am going back on the Disabled List again tomorrow
I am pretty sure of this because I told Tim Leiper I couldn't swing
and that it will take some time just like before
I am very disappointed just as I am sure that you all are
There is nothing I can do now besides trying to rehab as best I can
and get healthy as quickly as possible
I feel like crap over here right now and might just go see a movie tonight to kill some time
and get my mind off of it all
But tomorrow I will be good again and do all I can to get better!!

A note from Brett on Tuesday 26th June 2007
Well, here we are again
I have been to the doctor again today and got an MRI like I did with my shoulder
It hurt a lot more this time when they put the dye in - and I about went through the roof!
Got the reading 'sort of' back tonight
The assistant read it and said it was a deep bone bruise and it should heel to 100% over time
Not sure how long that is just yet
I find out the final reading tomorrow but it should be okay
The bruise is in the same place where I broke it in January
Sucks!!
I am now going to go into rehab and I think I am staying here to do it
and I just hope it doesn't take too long
Also there are two more outfielders coming tomorrow
I have to talk to Brian Graham in the next few days about what they want me to do
I honestly am not sure about my playing time when I do come back
but we'll cross the bridge when we come to it
Just an update and I will be back online tomorrow

A note from Brett on Thursday 28th June 2007
No news yet - and I am going to take that as good news!!
The doctor didn't call or come bye yesterday so I will say that makes me feel a little better!!
Hope to hear officially today and I will email or call then

A note from Brett on Saturday 7th July 2007
With the hand, I have a doctor's appointment the first day after the All Star Game break
which is 10th and 11th July
I might get a pain killing injection if I need it - but it does feel a lot better
I have been doing a small range of motion exercises and it's improving
So hopefully after five more days I may even get to start swinging!!
I want to be ready and then have six weeks to finish the season
That is my ideal situation

A note from Brett on Thursday 12th July 2007
There isn't any really bad news - more so just news - not good or bad
The first MRI I had two weeks ago was done incorrectly, so I found out today
What they did see on the first one was two bone bruises but no definitive answer on the ligaments
So I am now having what's called a three injection arthrogram
They put dye in three different areas to see if there are any leaks
Had the first one today and I then have two more Monday
Then an appointment after them on Monday with the hand specialist
Hope it's good news!
As for now, there is no chance of playing til at least the first on the month in my mind
And with our lineup how it is right now, I don't know if I will play when healthy anyway
Not what I wanted to hear, but there isn't much I can do right now
except push my good news date back to Monday and just hope!

First Base Coach during the recent games

PART TWO
During the Curve Injury Report,
the commentator mentions that Brett is
an important part of the Curve lineup,
but there is no timetable for his return

A note from Brett on Wednesday 18th July 2007
Is all good!
Every scan I have had has said that it's all okay and that I am okay to resume activity
I will start small and slow and hope to progress to swinging in about a week or so
The doctor said it is going to hurt - probably a lot - but it's not doing further damage
so try to swing through it
He is going to give me some painkillers and I am going to go from there
If after two to three weeks of trying to play and it's still being sore,
I will go to Pittsburgh to see another hand specialist for a second opinion
But as for today, I am starting to do things!!
About bloody time, huh!!

A note from Brett on Monday 23rd July 2007
Well, today went really good
A lot better than I thought it was going to be
I had fifteen dry swings with a fungo bat
and surprisingly had zero pain or discomfort
I also got to play catch as well
It all went really well!!
I am not sure of my plans tomorrow
but I am sure it will be a little more than today
Not bad for a start!!

Binghamton Mets bulldoze Curve 10-2 in opener

The Binghamton Mets exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Curve in Monday night's series opener from Blair County Ballpark

Curve starter Dewon Brazelton held the B-Mets at bay for the first three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth
With one out, Mark Kiger singled and advanced to third on a single from Mike Carp
Kiger scored on an RBI single from Brett Harper to give Binghamton the lead, 1-0
Jamar Hill supplied a fourth consecutive hit, an RBI double to plate Carp, and Binghamton led, 2-0
The Curve intentionally walked J.E. Cruz to load the bases, but Ryan Coultas followed with a two-run singled to make it 4-0
A batter later, Miguel Negron completed the six-run outburst with another two-run single

Jason Delaney got the Curve on the board, leading off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to right-center field off of B-Mets starter Jose Sanchez

Brazelton (3-3) returned in the fifth, and the trouble continued
Kiger again sparked the rally with a one-out single
Carp followed with a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out
The Curve again opted to load the bases with the intentional walk, but Hill followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead back to six runs
Cruz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Carp and push the lead to 8-1

Brazelton took the loss for the Curve, allowing a season-high eight runs on ten hits over 4-1/3 innings

Neil Walker drove in the second Curve run in the fourth, but Kiger capped the scoring with his third hit of the night, a two-run single off of reliever Jason Roach, in the sixth

Sanchez (3-5) earned the win for Binghamton, permitting just two runs on six hits over six innings

The loss dropped the Curve to 2-4 against the B-Mets this season

Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7.05pm
RHP Luis Munoz (9-4, 3.52) will make the start for Altoona against RHP Kevin Mulvey (8-8, 3.12) for the B-Mets

B-Mets rout Altoona

The Binghamton Mets picked up 15 hits and had three multi-run innings, cruising to a 10-2 win over the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark Monday

The win ends Binghamton’s losing streak at two games

Binghamton (44-56) went ahead for good in the fourth
After Dewon Brazelton picked up an out, Mark Kiger and Mike Carp singled before Brett Harper singled in Kiger
Jamar Hill followed with a double that brought in Carp before J.E. Cruz was intentionally walked
That loaded the bases for Ryan Coultas, who became the sixth straight B-Met to reach, thanks to a two-run single that scored Harper and Hill
After pitcher Jose Sanchez bunted Coultas into scoring position, Miguel Negron singled up the middle to bring in Cruz and Coultas, giving the B-Mets a 6-0 lead

After Altoona (51-48) got a run back on Jason Delaney’s leadoff homer off Sanchez in the fifth, the B-Mets went back to work against Brazelton (3-3) in the sixth
Kiger singled, Carp doubled and Harper was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out before Hill’s infield single scored Kiger and Cruz’s sacrifice fly brought in Carp to make it 8-1 B-Mets

Sanchez (3-5) gave up an RBI single to Neil Walker in the fifth before retiring the last four he faced
The righthander struck out five over six innings of work

Binghamton picked up two more against former B-Met Jason Roach in the sixth
After Sanchez opened the frame by reaching on an error, Negron and Drew Butera singled to load the bases for Kiger, who singled in Sanchez and Negron with the game’s final runs

Tuesday, the Binghamton Mets play the second game of their three-game series with the Altoona Curve
Kevin Mulvey (8-8, 3.12) will start for the B-Mets against Luis Muñoz (9-4, 3.52) of Altoona
Game time is 7.05pm from Blair County Ballpark with the radio broadcast starting at 6.50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF

Notes
Binghamton’s 15 hits tie a season high (also 5/23 vs. CON, 5/13 vs. POR, 4/20 @ TRE)
After not doing so for 11 consecutive games, the B-Mets have scored five runs or more in their last three
Kiger and Harper, each of whom had four-hit games Sunday, picked up multi-hit games Monday as well

B-Mets run over Curve

Curve manager Tim Leiper sat in his office, aptly summarizing the game that had just unfolded
‘‘It was everything today’’ Leiper said
‘‘It was a stinker of a game’’

Binghamton tagged starter Dewon Brazelton for eight runs in cruising to a 10-2 win before 3,561 fans at Blair County Ballpark

The offense didn’t do much, either
Aside from Alex Fernandez and Neil Walker’s three hits apiece, Altoona managed only two other hits

‘‘We didn’t play good here today as a team, but the best thing is we’ve got two more here’’ said Steven Pearce, whose on-base streak of 33 games that tied a franchise record ended
‘‘It’s just a test
You can’t let a game like this get you down’’

The B-Mets entered the night with the second-worst team batting average in the league but overcame that in a hurry the second time through the order
Brazelton worked swiftly through the first three innings, as the B-Mets managed only one hit

It was all down hill for the Curve starter thereafter
He retired the first hitter of the fourth inning before the next six hitters reached as Binghamton scored six runs in the frame
No. 8 hitter Ryan Coultas, then mired in a 4-for-37 funk since his promotion from Single-A, lined a hanging Brazelton offering with the bases loaded up the middle for a 4-0 lead
Miguel Negron cleared the bases two batters later for a two-run single and 6-0 advantage

Brazelton (3-3) had given up only 11 runs in his seven Curve starts before being rocked by Binghamton
The B-Mets torched him for 10 hits and eight runs in 4-1/3 innings

He labored through six innings in his last start to give a taxed Curve bullpen a breather

‘‘He did what he had to do the last time out of necessity for our ball club’’ Leiper said
‘‘You’d like to think it didn’t have an effect today, but he also hasn’t pitched a lot this year’’

Brazelton started four games at Triple-A Omaha in the Royals organization before his release in late April

Altoona had been rolling, taking three of four from Harrisburg and winning seven of their past nine games
The Curve scored 65 runs during that stretch but couldn’t mount any threats against Binghamton starter Jose Sanchez
Sanchez (3-5) sprayed six hits over six innings, surrendering only two runs

Pearce struck out in the third inning with runners at second and third, the only time the Curve had two runners on base against Sanchez

‘‘He was sneaky’’ Walker said
‘‘He kept us off-balance all day’’

The Curve last played Binghamton at the end of April, resulting in some unfamiliarity with the B-Mets
‘‘It can play a part, but I think they kind of caught us off-guard a little bit’’ Walker said
‘‘They had a pretty good game all-around’’

By the time Curve hitters had seen Sanchez twice, the team was buried in an 8-1 hole
‘‘That third time around the order, we’re trailing too much’’ Leiper said
‘‘You tend to do a little too much in those situations’’

Binghamton, which had 15 hits, finished its scoring off reliever Jason Roach
He gave up two runs - one earned - in 3-2/3 innings

Luis Munoz, one of the Curve’s most dependable starters, will go Tuesday as the Curve look to quickly erase Monday’s dud from their memories

‘‘As soon as the game ends, we put it behind us’’ Walker said

‘‘We’ve still got some momentum’’ Leiper said
‘‘It’s just one game
It’s not going to kill us’’
