Game Reports
The Binghamton Mets exploded for six runs in
the fourth inning and cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Curve
in Monday night's series opener from Blair County Ballpark
Curve starter Dewon Brazelton held the B-Mets at bay for the first
three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth
With one out, Mark Kiger singled and advanced to third on a single
from Mike Carp
Kiger scored on an RBI single from Brett Harper to give Binghamton
the lead, 1-0
Jamar Hill supplied a fourth consecutive hit, an RBI double to
plate Carp, and Binghamton led, 2-0
The Curve intentionally walked J.E. Cruz to load the bases, but
Ryan Coultas followed with a two-run singled to make it 4-0
A batter later, Miguel Negron completed the six-run outburst with
another two-run single
Jason Delaney got the Curve on the board, leading off the bottom
of the inning with a solo home run to right-center field off of
B-Mets starter Jose Sanchez
Brazelton (3-3) returned in the fifth, and the trouble continued
Kiger again sparked the rally with a one-out single
Carp followed with a double to put runners at second and third
with nobody out
The Curve again opted to load the bases with the intentional walk,
but Hill followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead back
to six runs
Cruz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Carp and push the
lead to 8-1
Brazelton took the loss for the Curve, allowing a season-high
eight runs on ten hits over 4-1/3 innings
Neil Walker drove in the second Curve run in the fourth, but Kiger
capped the scoring with his third hit of the night, a two-run
single off of reliever Jason Roach, in the sixth
Sanchez (3-5) earned the win for Binghamton, permitting just two
runs on six hits over six innings
The loss dropped the Curve to 2-4 against the B-Mets this season
Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7.05pm
RHP Luis Munoz (9-4, 3.52) will make the start for Altoona against
RHP Kevin Mulvey (8-8, 3.12) for the B-Mets
The Binghamton Mets picked up 15 hits and had
three multi-run innings, cruising to a 10-2 win over the Altoona
Curve at Blair County Ballpark Monday
The win ends Binghamtons losing streak at two games
Binghamton (44-56) went ahead for good in the fourth
After Dewon Brazelton picked up an out, Mark Kiger and Mike Carp
singled before Brett Harper singled in Kiger
Jamar Hill followed with a double that brought in Carp before
J.E. Cruz was intentionally walked
That loaded the bases for Ryan Coultas, who became the sixth straight
B-Met to reach, thanks to a two-run single that scored Harper
and Hill
After pitcher Jose Sanchez bunted Coultas into scoring position,
Miguel Negron singled up the middle to bring in Cruz and Coultas,
giving the B-Mets a 6-0 lead
After Altoona (51-48) got a run back on Jason Delaneys leadoff
homer off Sanchez in the fifth, the B-Mets went back to work against
Brazelton (3-3) in the sixth
Kiger singled, Carp doubled and Harper was intentionally walked
to load the bases with one out before Hills infield single
scored Kiger and Cruzs sacrifice fly brought in Carp to
make it 8-1 B-Mets
Sanchez (3-5) gave up an RBI single to Neil Walker in the fifth
before retiring the last four he faced
The righthander struck out five over six innings of work
Binghamton picked up two more against former B-Met Jason Roach
in the sixth
After Sanchez opened the frame by reaching on an error, Negron
and Drew Butera singled to load the bases for Kiger, who singled
in Sanchez and Negron with the games final runs
Tuesday, the Binghamton Mets play the second game of their three-game
series with the Altoona Curve
Kevin Mulvey (8-8, 3.12) will start for the B-Mets against Luis
Muñoz (9-4, 3.52) of Altoona
Game time is 7.05pm from Blair County Ballpark with the radio
broadcast starting at 6.50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF
Notes
Binghamtons 15 hits tie a season high (also 5/23 vs. CON,
5/13 vs. POR, 4/20 @ TRE)
After not doing so for 11 consecutive games, the B-Mets have scored
five runs or more in their last three
Kiger and Harper, each of whom had four-hit games Sunday, picked
up multi-hit games Monday as well
Curve manager Tim Leiper sat in his office,
aptly summarizing the game that had just unfolded
It was everything today Leiper said
It was a stinker of a game
Binghamton tagged starter Dewon Brazelton for eight runs in cruising
to a 10-2 win before 3,561 fans at Blair County Ballpark
The offense didnt do much, either
Aside from Alex Fernandez and Neil Walkers three hits apiece,
Altoona managed only two other hits
We didnt play good here today as a team, but
the best thing is weve got two more here said
Steven Pearce, whose on-base streak of 33 games that tied a franchise
record ended
Its just a test
You cant let a game like this get you down
The B-Mets entered the night with the second-worst team batting
average in the league but overcame that in a hurry the second
time through the order
Brazelton worked swiftly through the first three innings, as the
B-Mets managed only one hit
It was all down hill for the Curve starter thereafter
He retired the first hitter of the fourth inning before the next
six hitters reached as Binghamton scored six runs in the frame
No. 8 hitter Ryan Coultas, then mired in a 4-for-37 funk since
his promotion from Single-A, lined a hanging Brazelton offering
with the bases loaded up the middle for a 4-0 lead
Miguel Negron cleared the bases two batters later for a two-run
single and 6-0 advantage
Brazelton (3-3) had given up only 11 runs in his seven Curve starts
before being rocked by Binghamton
The B-Mets torched him for 10 hits and eight runs in 4-1/3 innings
He labored through six innings in his last start to give a taxed
Curve bullpen a breather
He did what he had to do the last time out of necessity
for our ball club Leiper said
Youd like to think it didnt have an effect
today, but he also hasnt pitched a lot this year
Brazelton started four games at Triple-A Omaha in the Royals organization
before his release in late April
Altoona had been rolling, taking three of four from Harrisburg
and winning seven of their past nine games
The Curve scored 65 runs during that stretch but couldnt
mount any threats against Binghamton starter Jose Sanchez
Sanchez (3-5) sprayed six hits over six innings, surrendering
only two runs
Pearce struck out in the third inning with runners at second and
third, the only time the Curve had two runners on base against
Sanchez
He was sneaky Walker said
He kept us off-balance all day
The Curve last played Binghamton at the end of April, resulting
in some unfamiliarity with the B-Mets
It can play a part, but I think they kind of caught
us off-guard a little bit Walker said
They had a pretty good game all-around
By the time Curve hitters had seen Sanchez twice, the team was
buried in an 8-1 hole
That third time around the order, were trailing
too much Leiper said
You tend to do a little too much in those situations
Binghamton, which had 15 hits, finished its scoring off reliever
Jason Roach
He gave up two runs - one earned - in 3-2/3 innings
Luis Munoz, one of the Curves most dependable starters,
will go Tuesday as the Curve look to quickly erase Mondays
dud from their memories
As soon as the game ends, we put it behind us
Walker said
Weve still got some momentum Leiper
said
Its just one game
Its not going to kill us
