Game Reports
Javier Guzman highlighted a five-run, ninth-inning
comeback with a go-ahead two-run double as the Curve stole their
series opener against the Harrisburg Senators, 11-7, Thursday
night at Commerce Bank Park in Harrisburg
After Jason Delaney tied the game at 7-7 with his third hit of
the game, Guzman bounced a long fly ball over the right-center
field wall to knock in two runs and give Altoona its first lead
since the first inning
Jason Bowers capped off the five-run rally with a two-run single
The Curve were aided in the inning by two dropped infield pop
ups by the Senators, including one by third baseman Dan Dement
on a ball hit by Vic Buttler to open the frame
Butter later came around to score on Delaney's run-scoring single
- his 13th hit in 17 at-bats over the past four games
The ninth-inning comeback was just the second game won by the
Curve this season when trailing entering the final frame
Brett Campbell (1-4) was charged with a blown save and suffered
the loss after allowing all five Altoona tallies
Ronald Belisario (1-0) earned the win after tossing a scoreless
seventh inning
One night after posting a season-high 20 hits in a win over Bowie,
the Curve offense once again had a productive night, recording
14 hits
Delaney's three hits led all Altoona batters, while Buttler, Steven
Pearce and Andrew McCutchen each posted two safeties
McCutchen blasted a second-inning solo home run - his sixth longball
of the season
Pearce's two-hit effort extended his on-base streak to 30 straight
games - just three games shy of matching Ronny Paulino's club-record
33-game streak from the 2004 season
Bowers also extended his current team-high hitting streak to 11
games in the ninth inning
The Curve and Senators will play the second game of their four-game
series Friday evening at Commerce Bank Park
Altoona left-hander Josh Shortslef (2-9, 4.24), who worked only
one inning because of a power outage delay Tuesday against Bowie,
will come back and make the start against Harrisburg southpaw
Mike Hinckley (8-8, 5.44) in the 6.35pm contest
The Eastern Leagues worst team embarrassed
itself in the ninth inning by dropping two infield popups, and
the Curve offense cashed in to steal victory from defeat Thursday
night
Altoona trailed Harrisburg by one entering the ninth before charging
back with five runs
The Senators, who are 31 games under .500, opened the door with
the errors, and the Curve made them pay in an 11-7 win at Commerce
Bank Park
Vic Buttler led off the ninth with a routine popup to third, but
Dan DeMent misplayed it for an error
Neil Walker and Steven Pearce singled to load the bases with no
outs against Senators closer Brett Campbell (1-4)
Jason Delaney, who earlier tied a franchise record by getting
a hit in his seventh consecutive at-bat, singled to center to
score Buttler and tie the game
Two batters later, Javier Guzman drilled a base-loaded double
to right that brought home Walker and Pearce for a 9-7 Curve lead
Things went from bad to worse moments later for Harrisburg when
shortstop Seth Bynum dropped a routine popup from Dave Parrish
I feel embarrassed for them Curve radio
announcer Jason Dambach said on the air after the Senators
comedy of errors
Then Jason Bowers delivered a two-run single that provided some
insurance and ran his hitting streak to 11 games
It marked only the second time all season the Curve have won when
trailing after eight innings
Altoona scored twice in the first, but Luis Munoz gave up four
runs in the bottom half of the inning
Every time the Curve offense mounted a charge, their pitching
staff faltered and let the Senators reclaim the lead
Andrew McCutchen homered in the second for Altoona
Sheldon Fulses solo homer in the sixth gave Harrisburg a
7-6 lead that stood until the ninth
Ronald Belisario (1-0) won in relief for the Curve
On Thursday night, the Altoona Curve took advantage
of a couple errors in the top of the ninth to score five runs
enroute to an 11-7 win over the Senators
The crowd of 2,997 watched the Senators take the lead on three
different occasions, only to blow a save for the third straight
game
For the seventh night in a row, the Senators scored at least six
runs with Dan Dement leading the way driving in two with three
hits in four trips to the plate
Sheldon Fulse hit his third home run of the season for the Sens
to give them the lead in the bottom of the sixth
All seven runs the Senators scored on Thursday were with two-outs,
which continues their recent surge of hitting in the clutch
Harrisburg scored four runs in the bottom of the first to overcome
a 2-0 lead by Altoona
But the Senators gave up big ninth inning runs for the third game
in a row
Over the past three games, the Sens have given up a total of eleven
runs
Game two of the series is Friday night with LH Mike Hinckley against
LH Josh Shortslef for Altoona
With the 2,997 entering Commerce Bank Park, the Senators are now
21,099 fans away from drawing their five millionth fan
