Game Reports
The Curve and Bowie Baysox were delayed for
nearly an hour following the first inning due to an area-wide
power outage, and when play resumed it was all Bowie as the Baysox
rolled the Curve, 6-1
The power actually went out in the top of the first inning, but
the two teams were able to continue playing through the conclusion
of the inning due to enough natural light
Following the inning however, the decision was made to halt play
Both starters, Josh Shortslef for Altoona and Fredy Deza for Bowie,
were unable to continue after the 56-minute delay
Rosman Garcia took over for Deza and was magnificent
Garcia (2-4) earned the win by throwing five scoreless innings
and allowing Altoona just two hits
Wardell Starling, who came on for Shortslef, couldn't match that
performance
Starling worked two scoreless innings, but Bowie got to him for
a run in the fourth inning, when Bobby Andrews plated Luis Jimenez
with a ground out for a 1-0 lead
The Baysox erupted for five runs to break the game open in the
fifth
Starling walked Blake Davis to start the frame
He retired Bryan Bass, but Paco Figueroa singled and Oscar Salazar
scored Davis with an RBI-single to put Bowie ahead, 2-0
Starling then walked Jimenez to load the bases
Matt Cepicky doubled home two runs and chased Starling from the
ballgame
Dave Davidson came on for Starling but permitted both inherited
runners to score and the Baysox led, 6-0
The Curve scored their lone run in the eighth inning on a Jason
Delaney RBI-single that scored Matt Meath
Starling (3-8) was saddled with his eighth loss of the season,
allowing six earned runs in just 3-1/3 innings of work
The Baysox won for the ninth time in 13 meetings between the two
clubs at BCB and also secured the 2007 season series with their
13th overall win in the 24-game series
The series will be decided with the finale on Wednesday night
at 7.05pm
Altoona will turn to RHP Dewon Brazelton (2-2, 1.91) in the rubber-match
against RHP Beau Hale (6-4, 4.52) for Bowie
Jason Delaney walked into a dark Curve clubhouse
during a power loss
Once play finally resumed, Altoonas offense was met with
another outage
Bowie silenced the Curve in coming away with a 6-1 win Tuesday
night before 3,909 fans at Blair County Ballpark
A mechanical problem at a Penelec building caused a power loss
that hit BCB with the game barely under way
The lights went out with Bowies Oscar Salazar, the games
third hitter, at the plate
Play was stopped for three minutes then, but the second delay
was much longer
Umpires stopped play for 56 minutes after the first inning
Had the delay lasted five more minutes, the ballpark would have
had to be evacuated because of darkness
Youre walking around, having a good time, Peter
Bradys here and everybodys enjoying themselves
Curve general manager Todd Parnell said
Then boom, the day changes
So did the Curves recent offensive success
Baysox reliever Rosman Garcia (2-4) limited Altoona to two hits
over five innings
The Curve had scored 20 runs in the previous two games
Sometimes youre going to run into a guy that
can expand the strike zone because hes pitching well, and
I think that was the case today said Delaney, whose
eighth-inning single produced the Curves only run
He pitched effectively, and he was able to expand
the zone himself
Bowie hammered reliever Wardell Starling for six runs in 3-1/3
innings, including five in the fifth inning
Matt Cepickys two-run double helped stake the Baysox to
a 6-0 lead
The Curve had a 1970s theme to accompany an appearance by Christopher
Knight, famour for his role as Peter Brady from The Brady
Bunch
Jon Laaser, the clubs assistant director of communications,
came up with a great line to describe the evenings theme
and power outage
I know its 70s night, but I didnt know
it was 1870s night Laaser deadpanned
Blair County Ballpark finally became illuminated again around
8:05, when the lights on the party deck in left field and the
radar gun flickered
Full power was restored five minutes later
Parnell experienced only one other extended outage at BCB a couple
years ago
That night, luckily The Blues Brothers were here
he said
We had The Blues Brothers come set up their stuff
Members of the Curve staff generated the entertainment this time,
running throughout BCB to spark fan noise in place of sound effects
piped through the speakers
Shirts and other merchandise were shot into the crowd
Our first thing is to make sure everybodys safe,
then continues to have fun Parnell said
Its hard to communicate that when theres
no power and no sound
The experience of the Curve staff helped keep order
Director of ballpark operations Kirk Stiffler called Penelec for
updates, and head groundskeepr Patrick Coakley consulted with
the umpires
Everybody knows pretty much where their area is
Parnell said
Its a tribute to how they work together
Were all on the same page so much that they automatically
know what to do
Neil Walker and Delaney each did their part to keep the mood light,
hopping on tiny tricycles to race - at Walkers urging
Walker easily beat Delaney, raising his hand in triumph after
coming down the first base line and breaking up the umpires huddled
at home plate
Its just like any other rain delay, except you
couldnt really do anything Delaney said
There was nowhere to go
You come back in the clubhouse, and theres nowhere to go
Its dark in here
We were just kind of finding ways to waste some time
Curve manager Tim Leiper now will try to fill innings with a taxed
bullpen, which essentially pitched nine innings Monday and eight
more Tuesday
Romulo Sanchez, Dave Davidson and Starling (3-8) each worked three
or more innings in the past two days
The outage disrupts a lot Leiper said
We had to use a lot of the bullpen that we werent
counting on using
Curve starter Josh Shortslef, who pitched only one inning before
being pulled because of the delay, will move up in the rotation
Leiper said its possible Shortslef will start Saturday in
place of Jason Roach, who made a spot start Monday
Im not going to let Shortslef go five days without
pitching Leiper said before adding were
definitely going to move him up
McCutchen back in lineup
Outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who had a minor groin injury, returned
to the starting lineup today after a two day break
He went 0-for-3
McCutchen came up gingerly on Friday after falling short on a
diving attempt to take away a single
He played the next night before taking two days off
