Game Reports
The Curve lost the lead in the ninth inning,
but prevailed in 10 innings as Neil Walker delivered a bases loaded
double that cleared the bases and led to a 9-6 win over Bowie
in the series finale from Prince George's Stadium
The win gave the Curve the series win as well as allowing them
to enter the all-star break a game over .500 at 44-43
The Curve needed another rally and got it in the tenth
Baysox closer Bob McCrory walked Brian Peterson to start the inning
Bryan Bass committed a key throwing error on a ball off the bat
of Dave Parrish and the Curve had runners on the corners with
nobody out
Taber Lee then walked to load the bases
However, McCrory struck out Jason Bowers and induced a force out
at the plate from Vic Buttler
With two outs, Walker doubled to left field to clear the bases
and give the Curve a 9-6 lead
The Curve got the game into the hands of closer Matt Peterson
with a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth
But Paco Figueroa led off with his fourth hit of the ballgame
and advanced to second as Val Majewski followed with a single
Peterson got the first two outs of the inning, but Morgan Clendenin
singled home Figueroa to tie the game, 6-6
It was just the third blown save of the season for Peterson, who
is currently second in the Eastern League with 18 saves
Peterson (4-0) did earn the win despite putting two more men aboard
in the bottom of the tenth
The Baysox jumped on top against Munoz and the Curve in the second
Oscar Salazar led off the inning with a double to left field and
scored two batters later on an RBI single contributed by Bass
The double was one of four hits on the night for Salazar and helped
Bowie to a 1-0 lead
Bowie made it 2-0 in the third inning
With one out, Figueroa doubled down the left field line
Munoz got Majewski to fly out to left field, but Salazar was at
it again, doubling home Figueroa for a 2-0 lead
The Curve got even in the fourth
Bowie starter Chris Waters walked Andrew McCutchen to start the
inning and McCutchen cruised around to cut the lead in half on
a double for Javier Guzman
Brian Peterson followed and scored Guzman with a single to the
left side of the infield and the game stood tied, 2-2
The Baysox took the lead back in the fifth and again it was Salazar
who did the damage
Salazar singled home Figueroa for a 3-2 Baysox lead
But the Curve stormed to the lead in the sixth
Waters walked both Jason Delaney and McCutchen to start the threat
for Altoona
Guzman then attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt which was thrown
away by Waters allowing Delaney to score and leaving runners at
the corners with nobody out
Rosman Garcia relieved Waters, but delivered a wild pitch that
allowed McCutchen to score for a 4-3 Altoona lead
Peterson was then walked and both runners moved up on another
wild pitch from Garcia
Another pitch got to the backstop, but this time on a charged
passed ball to Morgan Clendenin
Guzman scored to put the Curve ahead, 5-3
Parrish then singled back up the middle to plate Peterson and
the Curve led, 6-3
The Baysox cut the lead to one run with a pair of runs off of
Curve reliever Dave Davidson in the seventh
With one out, Figueroa doubled to start the Bowie rally
Majewski was plunked by Davidson to put two runners aboard
Parrish was then charged with a passed ball that allowed Figueroa
to take third
He scored from there as Davidson uncorked a wild pitch
Salazar then collected his third RBI of the night as he singled
to score Majewski
Davidson got out of the inning and Chris Hernandez worked a scoreless
eighth to keep the Curve in the lead
Munoz turned in six innings in his return to the Curve, permitting
three earned runs on nine hits
Munoz did not factor in the decision
McCrory (1-1) lost for the first time on the year after permitting
the go-ahead runs to the Curve in the tenth inning
The Curve will enjoy the league-wide All-Star break on Tuesday
and Wednesday before welcoming in division leading Akron for a
four-game series beginning Thursday night at 7.05pm at Blair County
Ballpark
The Curves wacky, up-and-down first half
could not have ended any other way
Altoona appeared to have everything in control up 6-3, blew that
lead late and watched Bowie tie it in the ninth inning Monday
night
The Curve then regrouped and rode Neil Walkers three-run
double in the 10th to a 9-6 win over the Baysox at Prince Georges
Stadium
The game epitomized the Curves first half, in which they
seemed on the verge of big things but never could get over the
hump of mediocrity
Altoona now heads into the Eastern League All-Star break one game
above .500 but still very much within reach of its fifth consecutive
trip to the playoffs
Earning another postseason berth wont be easy, though, as
the Curve will have to wade through heavy traffic in the Southern
Division
Altoona is third in the division, 7-1/2 games behind Akron and
4-1/2 in back of Erie
The SeaWolves appear to be the Curves biggest obstacle to
the final playoff spot, but Altoona will control its own destiny
with 11 games left against Erie, including a six-game series to
end the regular season
The Curve also will have to hold off Reading and Bowie, both right
behind them in the standings
The first half could have ended on a dreadful note for Altoona
with the blown lead, but Walker made sure it didnt happen
He came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th and
ripped a double for the decisive runs
Walker entered that at-bat 0-for-5 and the only Curve starter
without a hit on the night
Altoona scored four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit
Bowie committed a key error and threw three wild pitches in the
frame to help the Curve take control
The Baysox rallied with two runs in the seventh and one in the
eighth to pull within 6-5
Matt Peterson couldnt protect the lead in the ninth and
blew his third save, all against Bowie
The Baysox put the first two runners on, Peterson battled back
to get two outs, then Morgan Clendenin singled to right to score
Paco Figueroa with the tying run
Peterson (4-0) wound up getting the win, while Bowie reliever
Bob McCrory (1-1) took the loss
The bullpen collapse by the Curve cost Luis Munoz his ninth victory
Munoz gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings
The Baysox fell a bit short in their attempt
to get back to .500 at the All-Star break as some late errors
cost them down the stretch in their series finale to the Curve
The Baysox fell to Altoona 9-6, dropping the series two games
to one, while falling to (44-46) at the All-Star break
The Baysox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning,
when Bryan Bass singled to right-center, scoring Oscar Salazar
who doubled to lead off the inning, jumping the Baysox out to
the early lead
Paco Figueroa connected for a one out double in the third inning,
and was brought around to score two batters later when Salazar
connected for his second double of the game, scoring Figueroa,
putting the Baysox ahead, 2-0
The Curve though would get to Baysox starter Chris Waters in the
fourth inning, as Waters yielded a lead off walk to Andrew McCutchen
McCutchen would then score in the very next at bat on a Javier
Guzman double, putting the Curve to within one, 2-1
Guzman would then score on a Brian Peterson single, knotting the
game at 2-2
Oscar Salazar would come up big again in the fifth with an RBI
single to right-center, putting the Baysox ahead, 3-2
Costly Baysox mistakes marred the sixth inning as the Curve was
able to put an insurmountable four runs on the board, going ahead
6-3
Including two runs scored on Rosman Garica wild pitches
Garcia relieved Waters with no outs in the inning, following a
throwing error by the leftie to third on an attempt to get Jason
Delaney out
Delaney came across to score the first Curve run of the inning
The Baysox would get to within one run in the seventh as Paco
Figueroa went from second base to third on a passed ball from
Dave Parrish and would score in the same at bat on a wild pitch
by Dave Davidson, cutting the Curve lead to, 6-4
Salazar would come up big with another RBI single, scoring Val
Majewski putting the Curve to within one at, 6-5
Matt Peterson would come into the game in the ninth inning for
the save attempt, but would yield singles to Figueroa and Majewski
to lead off the inning
Oscar Salazar would strikeout for the first out and Jeff Fiorentino
would follow Salazar up with a pop out for the second out of the
frame
Morgan Clendenin would come through in the next at bat though
with a clutch single to right-center, scoring Paco Figueroa, tying
the game at, 6-6
Bryan Bass would end the inning for the Baysox striking out, taking
the game into the 10th
The Curve would pull away in the top of the 10th inning, putting
three runs on the board and securing the win, 9-6
RHP Bob McCrory led the inning off issuing a walk Brian Peterson
David Parrish would then reach base on a throwing error by Brian
Bass, putting runners at the corners
McCrory would then walk Taber Lee loading the bases, with no outs
Jason Bowers would then strike out looking for the first out and
Vic Buttler would ground into a force out, getting Brian Peterson
out at home, for the second out
Neil Walker would be the difference maker in the game, connecting
for a three run double to left that fell just out of the grasp
of the diving Bobby Andrews that put the Curve ahead for good,
9-6
Matt Peterson would struggle a bit in the 10th, but with no outs
and runners at first and second, Peterson got Matt Cepicky, who
pinch hit for Ruddy Yan, to fly out
Paco Figueroa to pop out and Val Majewski to ground out in order
ending the game and securing the series win, 9-6 in 10 innings
RHP Bob McCrory picked up his first Double-A loss and dropped
to (1-1) on the season
RHP Matt Peterson picked up the win and was also charged with
the blown save to move to (4-0) on the year
