Game Reports
For the second straight night, the Trenton
Thunder got an assist from the weather in earning a victory over
the Altoona Curve
After the two teams waited out a 1 hour, 47 minute rain delay
at the start of the game, the Thunder scored a pair of runs in
the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 5-4 lead and held on
to that lead into the bottom of the eighth, when the game was
called because of rain at Waterfront Park in Trenton
Play was stopped at 11.45pm and the game was officially called
at 12.25am
In the series opener Wednesday evening, Trenton needed only 4-1/2
innings to take a 10-0 lead over Altoona and won by that score
when the game was halted by rain
Wardell Starling (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing
a go-ahead RBI single to Gabriel Lopez in the Trenton half of
the sixth inning
Starling relieved Curve starter Yoslan Herrera, who received a
no-decision after allowing four runs - three earned - on six hits
over five innings of work
Jeff Marquez, who earlier in the week was selected to participate
in next week's Eastern League All-Star Game in Norwich, Connecticut,
notched his ninth victory of the season, allowing four runs -
one earned - over six innings
Marquez (9-5) allowed just one walk and fanned three batters in
picking up the win
Jeff Kennard, a member of the New York Yankees' 40-man roster,
worked the final two innings before rain halted play to earn his
sixth save for the Thunder
The Curve built leads of 2-1 and 4-2 against Marquez, but couldn't
hold either advantage
In the third, the Curve scored a pair of runs on a fielder's choice
grounder to second base by Vic Buttler that initially scored Brandon
Chaves from third, but also brought home Dave Parrish when an
attempted double play throw from shortstop Alberto Gonzalez hit
runner Jason Bowers in the right arm
Bowers left the game with an apparent injury to his hand or wrist
area
Altoona grabbed their second lead in the fourth inning on an RBI
double by Jason Delaney and a run-scoring single by Dave Parrish
The Curve (42-41) have dropped the first two games of their six-game,
pre-All-Star Break road trip while Trenton (53-31) won its sixth
straight game since being swept by Altoona last week at Blair
County Ballpark
The Curve and Thunder will play the final game of their three-game
series Friday night at 7.05pm
Altoona will send left-hander Josh Shortslef (2-7, 3.95) to the
mound against Trenton All-Star righty Alan Horne (8-3, 2.31)
Fans can follow all of the action on the Curve Radio Network or
on-line at AltoonaCurve.com starting at 6.50pm with the Curve
GameDay Show presented by Omega Bank
Jason Dambach will call the action live from Waterfront Park
The Curve offense rebounded to do some damage
one day after getting no-hit, but the pitching staff faltered
this time around
Altoona scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead Thursday
night, but Trenton rallied for a 5-4 win at a soggy Waterfront
Park
The game started 1 hour, 47 minutes late because of rain
The skies opened up again just before midnight and forced the
game to end early in the bottom of the eighth inning
The Curve erased a 1-0 deficit with a pair of runs on a strange
play in the third
Vic Buttler came up with the bases loaded and no outs and grounded
to second baseman Gabe Lopez, who tried to turn a double play
Shortstop Alberto Gonzalezs throw to first base hit Jason
Bowers on the right arm as he was running to second, breaking
up the double play
Brandon Chaves scored from third, and Dave Parrish scooted around
from second when the ball got loose
Trenton tied it at 2-2 with a run in its half of the third off
Altoona starter Yoslan Herrera
The Curve retook the lead in their next at-bat as Jason Delaney
doubled home Andrew McCutchen
Parrish singled Delaney home later in the inning for a 4-2 lead
Herrera and the Curve pitching staff couldnt make it hold
up
Trenton closed within 4-3 in the fourth off Herrera before taking
the lead for good with two runs in the sixth
Herrera gave up a leadoff single to Matt Carson before giving
way to Wardell Starling
Colin Curtis singled home Carson to tie the game and later scored
on a single by Lopez for a 5-4 Thunder lead
Pitcher Luis Munoz rejoined the Curve on Thursday after going
up to Triple-A Indianapolis for one start
Pitcher Michael Crotta, who came up from low-A Hickory for a spot
start with Altoona, was sent back down to the Crawdads
Juan Miranda collected three hits and two RBI
to lead the Trenton Thunder to a 5-4 win over the Altoona Curve
on Thursday night at Waterfront Park in a game called due to rain
in the 8th Inning
The win was the sixth in a row for the Thunder
After Miranda gave Trenton (53-31) a 1-0 lead in the 1st Inning
on an RBI double, Altoona (42-41) came back with two runs in the
3rd and 4th Innings off Thunder starter Jeff Marquez for a 4-2
lead
Miranda's second RBI hit made it 4-2 with Aarom Baldiris adding
an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to
4-3
Marquez worked through six innings and then got help from the
hitters as Trenton took the lead in the bottom of the sixth
Trenton got their first two batters on with hits
C P.J. Pilittere grounded out to bring home the tying run
Then after a steal of 3rd Base by LF Colin Curtis, 2B Gabe Lopez
singled home the go-ahead run off reliever Wardell Starling (3-7),
who took the loss allowing one run in 1/3 of an inning
Marquez (9-5) allowed four runs (one earned) for the win with
one walk and three strikeouts
Jeff Kennard came on to pitch two scoreless innings of relief
before the rain halted
That earned him his 6th save
Trenton and Altoona wrap up their series on Friday at 7.05pm
Alan Horne (8-3, 2.31) starts for the Thunder against the Curve's
