Game Reports
The Bowie Baysox scored six runs early and
held off a late Curve rally to take game three of a four-games
series, 6-4, on Monday night at Blair County Ballpark
Derek Hankins, making his Double-A and Curve debut, was roughed
up for six runs over 3-2/3 innings
Hankins (0-1) got off to a troublesome start in the top of the
first inning
The 24-year old got the first out, but walked Bryan Bass and Matt
Cepicky to put two men aboard
Luis Jimenez followed with a towering drive over the wall in right-center
field to put the Baysox ahead, 3-0
Hankins retired the Bowie side in order in the second, but the
third brought more problems
Paco Figueroa walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second
as Bass reached on an error on Steven Pearce
Matt Cepicky delivered a single to score Figueroa and Jimenez
followed with a double that brought Bass home for a 5-0 lead
Hankins hit Oscar Salazar to load the bases and Jeff Fiorentino
lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to add another run to the
lead
Beau Hale came off the disabled list to make the start for Bowie
and worked three scoreless innings
Sendy Rleal followed Hale and turned in two more scoreless innnings
as the Curve continued to trail 6-0 into the sixth
Jason Roach relieved Hankins and worked 4-1/3 scoreless innings
to keep the Curve in the game
The Curve began their comeback bid in the sixth as the third pitcher
of the night for Bowie, Rosman Garcia, walked four consecutive
batters to force home a run without the benefit of a hit
Altoona picked up another run off of Garcia in the seventh as
Neil Walker singled in Jason Bowers to close to a 6-2 game
Pearce, who was named as the Eastern League's player of the week
prior to the ballgame, added his 51st RBI of the season by knocking
in Bowers with a single in the eighth inning
Walker had preceded that single with a sacrifice fly that scored
Dave Parrish as the Curve pulled within two runs, 6-4
The Curve never got all the way back however, as Garcia got out
of the eighth with no further damage incurred
The Curve put two runners aboard in the ninth, but Bob McCrury
closed the door and earned his third save of the season
Altoona stranded 15 runners in the loss, including nine in the
last four innings
Bowie has claimed eight of the ten games played between the two
teams at Blair County Ballpark this season
Rleal (2-2) earned the win for the Baysox with his two scoreless
innings
The series finale is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7.05pm
RHP Dewon Brazelton (1-1, 2.77) will make the start for Altoona
against LHP Oscar Alvarez (6-2, 4.95) for Bowie
A hit here or a hit there, and it could have
been a different outcome
Instead, the Curve stranded 15 runners on base in a 6-4 loss to
Bowie on Tuesday night before 4,072 fans at Blair County Ballpark
Altoona loaded the bases in four different innings against the
Baysox but came away with just two runs in those situations
I dont focus on the missed chances
Curve manager Tim Leiper said
I focus on the fact we got to those situations
We couldve given up very easily tonight
Sure enough
Newcomer Derek Hankins labored through 3-2/3 innings and buried
Altoona in an early 6-0 hole
Well after Hankins departed, Bowies pitching staff perfected
the art of damage control:-
1 - Dave Parrish bounced into a double play in the sixth inning
with the bases juiced to end that threat and the Curve trailing,
6-1
2 - Brian Peterson grounded out to first with the bases full and
two outs in the seventh down 6-2
3 - Jason Delaney grounded out to third with runners at second
and third and two outs in the eighth with Bowie clinging to a
6-4 lead
4 - Then, to end the night, Jason Bowers flew out to left with
runners at first and second
Seven of the Curves 15 runners left on base were stranded
in scoring position with two outs
Theres not really much to explain
Andrew McCutchen said
Its two-out situations every time
Weve just got to be smart with the bat
Bowie starter Beau Hale, in his first outing since recovering
from a chest injury, and reliever Sendy Rleal (2-2) blanked Altoona
through five innings
The Curve generated their first run in the sixth
Reliever Rosman Garcia, who missed the strike zone on 15 of his
first 17 pitches, walked the bases full
Brandon Chaves walked on five pitches to draw the Curve to 6-1
before Parrishs double play ended the inning
Garcia walked six in three innings and allowed four runs - two
earned
The Curves only other run generated with the bases loaded
came on Neil Walkers eighth-inning sacrifice fly
Hankins started in place of Kip Bouknight, who was promoted to
Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday
Hankins allowed 14 earned runs in 20-1/3 innings in his past four
starts at Single-A Lynchburg and didnt improve on those
numbers in his Double-A debut
He allowed six runs - five earned - on five walks and four hits
The right-hander, who had a 7-2 record and 4.66 ERA for the Hillcats,
threw 95 pitches in only 3-2/3 innings
The Pirates have had some shakeup in their pitching staff with
Zach Duke on the disabled list and Shane Youmans promotion
from Triple-A
That has caused a trickle-down effect to Altoona
Bouknight, one of the Curves best starters, filled in for
Youman with Indianapolis on Sunday
Luis Munoz will make a spot start for Indy on Wednesday but is
expected to return to the Curve
How much can all the moves affect pitching coach Ray Searages
staff?
I have no idea he said
I just take the pitchers the Pirates give me and try
to make them better
Bowies Luis Jimenez hit a towering homer off Hankins (0-1)
in the first inning to stake the Baysox to a 3-0 lead
Jimenez then came through with an RBI single in a three-run third
as Bowie took a 6-0 lead
They didnt look good out there Leiper
said of his team
Theres no way you can when youre down
6-0
But at the same time, we set up chances to score
Jason Roach came on in the fourth and threw 4-1/3 scoreless innings,
saving a Curve bullpen that pitched nine innings Sunday night
We had to run Hankins out there Leiper
said
I know as a fan you sit there and dont understand
You come to the ballpark and think Hey, theres an
unlimited supply of pitchers
Theres not
Leiper, believing the hot offense would be able to rally, called
on closer Matt Peterson to throw the ninth despite trailing
But Altoonas final scoring chance fizzled with runners at
first and second
With the way we were scoring runs, I thought we had
a chance to win Leiper said
Sure enough, we had a chance
We couldnt get that big hit
