Game Reports
Romulo Sanchez worked three scoreless innings
of relief and earned the win as the Curve beat the Bowie Baysox,
7-1, to level their four-game series at a game apiece Sunday night
at Blair County Ballpark
Justin Vaclavik, normally a reliever, made the start for the Curve
in the place of Kip Bouknight who was promoted to triple-A Indianapolis
last week
Vaclavik set the tone, allowing a lone run in three innings
That run scored in the first as the Baysox jumped to a 1-0 lead
Sanchez (4-2) worked three scoreless innings through the sixth
to earn the win
The Curve also got a pair of scoreless innings from Chris Hernandez
and one from Wardell Starling
Meanwhile, the Curve offense got all the runs they would need
in the third inning
Bowie starter Fredy Deza walked Taber Lee with one out and Brandon
Chaves followed with a triple to right-center field to tie the
game, 1-1
Chaves scored on a ground ball from Vic Buttler that was misplayed
by Bowie second baseman Pago Figueroa
Deza retired Neil Walker but walked Steven Pearce to put two aboard
The Baysox then opted to intentionally walk Alex Fernandez to
load the bases and face Andrew McCutchen
McCutchen made Bowie pay with a two-run single for a 4-1 Curve
lead
Pearce and Buttler each knocked in runs with singles off of reliever
Rommie Lewis in the Curve sixth as they stretched their lead to
6-1
Pearce then added his 50th RBI of the season by singling in Chaves
in the eighth to cap the scoring
Deza (3-6) was saddled with the loss for the Baysox
The win was just the second for the Curve in the nine games played
between the two clubs at Blair County Ballpark this season
Game three is slated for Monday night at 7.05pm
RHP Derek Hankins (0-0, 0.00) who was promoted from Lynchburg
(A) on Sunday will make his Curve debut against RHP Beau Hale
(5-3, 4.37) for the Baysox
Not many teams have ever come into Blair County
Ballpark and knocked around the Curve like Bowie has done this
season
Altoona started what it hopes will be the getting-even process
Sunday night
The Curve scored four times in the third inning and cruised to
a 7-1 victory over the Baysox before 6,023 fans
Bowie had won five straight games at BCB and posted a 7-1 record
there prior to Sunday
If we had the answer, wed probably beat them
infielder Taber Lee said when asked about the Curves home
struggles against the Baysox
Its one of those things where we dont
know
Maybe today's effort will change that
Steven Pearce, who appears to be a lock for the Eastern League
Player of the Month honor for June, drove in two runs, as did
Vic Buttler and Andrew McCutchen
Lee, batting ninth, helped set up the top of the order by getting
on base three times and scored twice
Theyre a good team, a good-hitting team and
I dont know what it is Lee said of the Baysox
When they show up to play here, theyre ready
to play and they do what they do
The Baysox did that once again Sunday and looked like they would
take control in the opening inning
Curve pitcher Justin Vaclavik, a reliever making a spot start,
hit Paco Figueroa on an 0-2 pitch to start the game before walking
Bryan Bass
Vaclavik has had problems minimizing the damage this season, but
he did a fine job of it in that key situation
He got a double play grounder from Matt Cepicky, and even though
Oscar Salazar tripled home a run, Vaclavik escaped the inning
with the Curve in good shape trailing just 1-0
Vaclavik kept the Baysox off the board the next two innings, then
the Curve offense heated up against Bowie starter Fredy Deza (3-6)
in the third
Brandon Chaves tripled home Lee to tie the game and scored on
Buttlers infield roller to give Altoona the lead for good
McCutchen smacked a bases-loaded, two-run single to right later
in the inning to put the Curve in control up 4-1
Two insurance runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh sealed
Altoonas fifth win in six games
More importantly, the victory got the monkey off the Curves
back in terms of solving Bowie at home
Tonight we showed the 1-7 record doesnt really
matter Leiper said
You get a little challenge, youve got to find
a way to get it done
The teams still have two more games in this series and three more
in two weeks at BCB
Altoona is a solid 25-16 at home, which makes the 2-7 mark against
the Baysox even more perplexing
I dont know about the rest of the team, but
I like hitting here said Bowie outfielder Jeff Fiorentino,
who went 2-for-4 Sunday
You see the ball really well, and theyve got
a good playing surface out there
I would say we have a better chance of winning because were
confident
When you do well against a team, you look forward to facing that
team
We come here expecting to win
One reason for the success, Fiorentino added, is the Baysox can
stock their lineup with left-handed hitters against an Altoona
pitching staff with only two lefties
We havent played great games against them, but
theyve also played good games against us Leiper
said
Theyre one of those teams this year that their
hitters kind of match up against our pitchers
That wasnt the case Sunday
Vaclavik gave up one run over three innings, then Romulo Sanchez
(3-2) tossed three scoreless frames and was credited with the
win
Chris Hernandez (two innings) and Wardell Starling (one) shut
out the Baysox to finish off the night
Vaclaviks performance, his second spot start, was the key
The Curve could need a No 6 starter on occasion with four more
doubleheaders looming, and Vaclavik has proven he can give the
club a boost with extended outings
Vaclavik said he feels relaxed starting
a game, and he knows showing that kind of versatility can benefit
his career
It just opens up their minds for different ways to
use me he said
