Brandon Chaves knocked in a pair of runs with
a sixth-inning single that propelled the Curve to a series-opening
4-2 win over the Reading Phillies Friday night at FirstEnergy
Stadium in Reading
Chaves, a .373 hitter this season with runners in scoring position,
continued his clutch hitting with a two out single into right
field that scored both Steven Pearce and Brett Roneberg and gave
the Curve a 3-2 lead
Altoona added an insurance tally in the seventh inning on an Adam
Boeve RBI single to take a 4-2 lead and then turned the game over
to the bullpen after six strong innings from starter Luis Munoz
Chris Hernandez tossed a scoreless seventh inning before closer
Matt Peterson was called upon in the bottom of the eighth and
worked a pair of scoreless frames to earn his 15th save in 16
opportunities
Munoz (7-4) earned the win for Altoona, allowing two runs - one
earned - on six hits
The right-hander walked three batters, struck out three and allowed
a home run to Reading leadoff man Mike Spidale in the first inning
Munoz is now tied with teammate Kip Bouknight for the team lead
with seven victories
Patrick Overholt (0-2) took the loss for Reading in just his second
Double-A start

the sixth inning as visiting Altoona edged Reading, 4-2, on Friday
Chaves ripped a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to give the
Curve (35-35) a 3-2 lead
The 27-year-old shortstop, who was 1-for-2 with two walks, is
batting .373 with runners in scoring position and .285 overall
Altoona's Steven Pearce went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring triple
Starter Luis Munoz (7-4) got the win after allowing two runs -
one earned - on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts
in six innings
Matt Peterson scattered two hits with three strikeouts over the
final two frames to notch his 15th save, tying Connecticut's Brian
Anderson for the Eastern League lead
Phillies starter Patrick Overholt (0-2) surrendered three runs
on six hits and two walks while striking out six in six frames
Mike Spidale hit a leadoff homer, his second of the season, in
the first and Overholt drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth

streak and won for just the third time in eight games, their struggling
pitching staff shutting down the Phillies 4-2 Friday night
