Game Reports

Neil Walker (pictured) drilled a pair of two-run homers and Brandon Chaves
knocked in the winning run with an RBI groundout in the 10th inning as the Curve
snapped their 10-game losing streak with a 7-6, extra-inning win at Bowie Sunday afternoon

Walker's two homers help Curve end skid

Third baseman Neil Walker became the first Curve player this season to hit two home runs in a game and Brandon Chaves knocked in the game's winning run on fielder's choice in the top of the 10th inning as Altoona halted the second-longest losing streak in franchise history with a 7-6 win over the Bowie Baysox Sunday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie

The win ended the Curve's 10-game losing streak, which was just one loss shy of matching the longest skid in club history
Prior to Sunday's win over Bowie, Altoona (20-26) had not won since the first game of their May 17th doubleheader against Portland at Blair County Ballpark

Walker homered in both the third and seventh innings to give the Curve a two-run advantage in each frame

In the third, with the game tied at 2-2, he drilled a fastball from Bowie starter Radhames Liz over the right-center field fence, then, in the seventh touched up reliever Felix Romero for a longball to straightaway center

The two home runs were Walker's seventh and eighth of the season, moving him past teammate Randy Ruiz for the team lead in that category

The second of Walker's two homers gave Altoona a 6-4 lead, which it carried into the bottom of the eighth inning
But, in the eighth, the Baysox cut the Curve lead in half on an RBI single by Val Majewski, which scored pinch-runner Travis Brown
The run was charged to Curve reliever Mike Nannini, but Matt Peterson stranded the tying run at third base to get out of the inning

In the bottom of the ninth, Peterson, who had converted each of his first seven save opportunities, retired the first two men he faced to bring the Curve within one out of victory
However, Peterson walked Ruddy Yan and gave up a game-tying double to Paco Figueroa, which sent the game to extra innings

Peterson was charged with his first blown save of the season

But the Curve wouldn't be denied victory as Adam Boeve led off the top of the tenth with a double and later scored on Chaves' fielder's choice grounder to first
On the play, Baysox' first baseman Brandon Sing threw to the plate, but his throw pulled catcher Eli Whiteside away from the plate, allowing Boeve to score the eventual winning run

Rommie Lewis (1-2) allowed the winning run and was tagged with the loss

Romulo Sanchez held the Baysox off the board in the bottom of the tenth inning to earn his first save of the season

Peterson (2-0) was credited with the victory

Yoslan Herrera made his ninth start for the Curve and pitched 4-1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits to pick up a no-decision

Luis Munoz, who was bounced from Friday's game after retiring only two batters in a seven-run Bowie first inning, returned to the mound to aid a tired Curve bullpen and tossed 1-2/3 scoreless innings

Offensively, in addition to Walker's big day, Andrew McCutchen continued to climb out of his season-long slump at the plate, collecting three hits in five at-bats on the afternoon
The Pirates' top prospect is hitting .359 (14-for-39) over his last nine games

Boeve and Alex Fernandez each added two hits

The Curve will look for back-to-back wins as they take on Bowie Monday afternoon in the finale of the four-game Memorial Day weekend series at Prince George's Stadium
Curve righty Kip Bouknight (4-2, 3.78) will take the mound against Bowie left-hander Oscar Alvarez (6-1, 3.38) in the 2.05pm contest

Baysox drop tough one to Curve, 7-6, in 10 innings

The Baysox entered today’s contest with the Curve, looking for their seventh straight win over their division rival, but it was not in the cards as the Baysox dropped game three of their series with Altoona, 7-6, in 10 innings

Baysox starter Radhames Liz got knocked out of the game early following some early struggles, including a bases loaded walk, plating one run in the top of the second, giving the Curve a 1-0 lead
Jason Bowers would bring across another run in the frame on an RBI groundout, scoring Adam Boeve, making it 2-0 Curve

The Baysox would even things up in the bottom of the frame, coming in the way of an Eli Whiteside double, scoring both Val Majewski and Brandon Sing, tying the game at, 2-2
The Curve would take a two-run lead in the top of the third when 3B Neil Walker connected for his seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast off of Liz, putting Altoona ahead, 4-2

Liz would depart the game after three innings, giving up four hits and four runs, with two walks

The Baysox also plated two runs in the third inning, the first on an Oscar Salazar ground out, scoring Ruddy Yan, cutting the lead to 4-3
Jeff Fiorentino, would then even the score for the second time in the game, smacking an RBI single to right, scoring Paco Figueroa, who reached on a single, making it, 4-4

Felix Romero would enter the game in the seventh relieving Fredy Deza

And the Curve would take advantage, scoring two runs on a Neil Walker two-run home run, his second of the game, putting the Curve ahead, 6-4

The Baysox would pull to within one run of Altoona in the bottom of the eighth, when Val Majewski scored Travis brown on an RBI single, making it 6-5 Curve

The Baysox would tie the game up again in the bottom of the ninth, when Paco Figueroa delivered with a two out RBI double to center, off of Curve reliever Matt Peterson, plating Ruddy Yan who reached on a walk, tying the game at 6-6

Figueroa went 3-for-5 on the day, leading the Baysox 14-hit attack

The Curve got out of the inning though getting Ryan Hubele, who pinch-hit for Travis Brown, to fly out to deep left, taking the game into extra innings

Rommie Lewis, who came on in relief in the ninth, remained in the game for the Baysox and yielded a lead off double to Adam Boeve
Brandon Chaves then plated the winning run, putting the Curve ahead for good, 7-6

Val Majewski was the only base runner the Baysox got on board in the bottom of the tenth on a single to right field as Romulo Sanchez, picked up his first save of the season, ending the game getting Brandon Sing to pop out to Brandon Chaves for the final out

With the win the Curve avoided tying their longest losing streak at 11 games, while the loss dropped the Baysox to 26-23 on the year

The Baysox remain in second place in the division, one game ahead of Erie

The Baysox and Curve wrap up their four-game set tomorrow, with a special Memorial Day matinee starting at 2.05pm at Prince George’s Stadium
LHP Oscar Alvarez (6-1, 3.38) will get the start for the Baysox opposing RHP Kip Bouknight (4-2, 3.78)

Walker powers Curve

Neil Walker ripped a pair of two-run homers and Adam Boeve scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as visiting Altoona edged Bowie, 7-6, on Sunday

Walker launched his shots in the third and seventh innings, breaking ties in both frames
Despite going 2-for-19 in his previous five games, the 21-year-old third baseman leads Altoona with 46 hits, eight home runs and 81 total bases

Adam Boeve led off the 10th with a double down the right-field line, advanced to third on Brian Peterson's sacrifice bunt and scored on Brandon Chaves' grounder to first base
The 26-year-old right fielder also singled and scored in the first for the Curve (20-26), who snapped a 10-game losing streak

Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-5 and is hitting .359 over his last nine games

Alex Fernandez added two hits and a run

Curve reliever Matt Peterson (2-0) surrendered a run on two hits while striking out one and walking one in two innings for the win

Romulo Sanchez gave up a hit and struck out a batter in a scoreless ninth for his first save

Starter Yoslan Herrera gave up four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out one in 4-1/3 innings

Baysox reliever Rommie Lewis Jr (1-2) yielded a run on three hits while striking out one and walking two in two innings

Starter Radhames Liz allowed four runs on four hits while fanning one and walking two in three frames

Eli Whiteside belted a two-run double in the second and Paco Figueroa went 3-for-5 with a game-tying RBI double in the ninth for Bowie (26-23)

Oscar Salazar went 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 11-games

Curve snap streak
Walker’s homers end 10-game skid

The second-worst losing streak in Curve history is over - barely, and not without plenty of drama

Altoona lugged a 10-game skid into Sunday afternoon’s contest at Bowie, and one more defeat would have matched the team record of 11 straight losses set in 2000
The Curve were in control much of the day but three times blew a two-run lead, only to hang tough for a 7-6 win in 10 innings at Prince George’s Stadium

Neil Walker blasted a pair of two-run homers, the second giving Altoona a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning

The Baysox, who had erased a 2-0 deficit in the second and 4-2 deficit in the third, once again fought back

Bowie scored a run in the eighth off reliever Mike Nannini, with Curve closer Matt Peterson escaping a first-and-third, one-out jam in the inning to keep it at 6-5

Peterson wasn’t as fortunate in the ninth
He walked Ruddy Yan with two outs, then blew his first save in eight chances when Paco Figueroa tied the game on an RBI double

The Curve didn’t get down, though, showing the same kind of resiliency they have at numerous points during the losing streak
Those other times didn’t pay off in terms of victory, but Sunday it did
Adam Boeve led off the 10th inning with a double against reliever Rommie Lewis (1-2), and Brian Peterson bunted Boeve to third
Brandon Chaves bounced a ball to Baysox first baseman Brandon Sing, whose throw to the plate wasn’t in time as Boeve scored the go-ahead run

Romulo Sanchez worked around a one-out single in 10th for his first save

Peterson (2-0) wound up getting the win

Chaves walked with the bases loaded, and Jason Bowers’ groundout scored Boeve for a 2-0 Curve lead in the second

Walker’s first two-run homer of the day made it 4-2 in the third
