The Curve blew a late-inning three-run lead
and stretched their losing streak to eight games as the Akron
Aeros took the series finale, 7-6, in ten innings Thursday at
Canal Park in Akron, OH
Altoona's losing streak now stands as the second longest in team-history
trailing only a stretch from April 15-26, 2000 in which the Curve
dropped 11 consecutive ballgames
The winning run scored in the bottom of the tenth against losing
pitcher Justin Vaclavik (1-4)
With two outs in the inning, Jordan Brown singled and advanced
to second base as Vaclavik hit Brian Barton
That brought up Ryan Goleski, who singled through the hole on
the left side of the Curve infield to score Brown with the winning
run
The win gave Akron the series sweep and improved their record
to 7-3 against Altoona on the season
The loss, which places the Curve a season-high seven games back
in the Southern Division, can be traced back to the eighth inning
Trailing, 6-3, the Aeros stormed from behind against a pair of
Altoona relievers in the bottom of the eighth inning
Jon Van Every doubled off of Romulo Sanchez to lead off the inning
and Trevor Crowe reached on a bunt single to put men on the corners
Jason Roach relieved Sanchez and promptly walked Wyatt Toregas
to load the bases
Pat Osborn then shot a double down the line in left field to clear
the bases and tie the game, 6-6
Roach hit the next batter, Asdrubal Cabrera, and was taken out
of the ballgame by Tim Leiper
Matt Peterson came on and got out of the jam to keep the game
tied
The Curve had used a big inning in the sixth to put themselves
in position to win
T.J. Burton came on in relief of Akron starter Joe Ness and promptly
walked Randy Ruiz to lead off the inning
Ruiz advanced to second on a ground-out by Steven Pearce
He scored from there on a two-out single from Alex Fernandez to
cut the Aeros lead to one, 3-2
Brian Peterson reached on an error by Brandon Pinckney and Brandon
Chaves followed with an RBI single that scorerd Fernandez to tie
the ballgame
Jason Bowers then singled on the infield to load the bases
Burton walked Andrew McCutchen to force in Peterson and give the
Curve the lead, 4-3
Burton was removed in favor of Reid Santos who permitted a two-run
single to Adam Boeve and Altoona led, 6-3
The Curve had grabbed the lead with the game's first run in the
fourth inning when Fernandez's two-out single scored Neil Walker
The Aeros response was immediate
Barton blasted the first pitch of the bottom of the inning out
of the ballpark to center field to tie the game, 1-1
Akron scored two more runs off of Curve starter Josh Shortslef
in the inning to lead, 3-1
Neither Shortslef or Ness factored in the decision, as Shortslef
(0-5) remained winless on the season
Randy Newsom (2-0) threw a scoreless tenth inning for Akron and
received his second win
The Curve will continue their eight-game road trip Friday night
as they open a four-game series in Bowie at 7.05pm
RHP Luis Munoz (5-1, 2.68) will make the start for Altoona against
LHP Craig Anderson (3-1, 4.50) for the Baysox
Ryan Goleski's RBI single in the bottom of
the 10th inning sent Akron to a 7-6 win over Altoona on Thursday
Goleski delivered the decisive hit when he shot a single through
the left side of the infield that allowed Jordan Brown to score
from second
Goleski went 2-for-6 and scored a run
Pat Osborn's three-run double in the eighth tied the game for
the Aeros
Osborn went 2-for-3 with four RBIs
Brian Barton added a solo homer, his fifth, in the fourth for
Akron (27-18)
Reliever Randy Newsom (2-0) picked up the victory, working around
a hit and a walk in a scoreless 10th
Starter Joe Ness tossed five solid innings, allowing a run on
five hits and two walks while fanning six
The Curve (19-24), who have lost eight straight, built a 6-3 lead
behind a five-run sixth
Adam Boeve's two-run single and Alex Fernandez's RBI single highlighted
the frame
Justin Vaclavik (1-4) took the loss after giving up a run on two
hits and a hit batter in the 10th
Tim Leiper scoffed at the notion five days
ago, refusing to acknowledge his struggling team might be in a
dangerous position as it embarked on an eight-game road trip
Everything will be OK over the long haul, the Curves ever-positive
manager said with blanket assurance
While that still may be the case, theres no denying that,
right now, everything is far from OK
Altoona lost its eighth straight game, the second-longest skid
in franchise history, and did so in incredibly disappointing fashion
Thursday
The Curve blew a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning against Akron and
lost, 7-6, in the 10th as the Aeros swept a four-game series at
Canal Park
The worst skid in Curve history was 11 games in 2000
Altoona has between today and Sunday to win at Bowie to avoid
matching that dubious drought
The Curve were 19-16 and closing in on first place in the Southern
Division just a week ago
Now theyre seven games behind the frontrunning Aeros
The only bit of good news is that the rest of the division is
hovering around .500, so Altoona is only 3-1/2 games out of second
place
The Curve scored five runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-1
deficit Thursday
Alex Fernandez and Brandon Chaves had RBI singles, Andrew McCutchen
walked with the bases loaded and Adam Boeves two-out, two-run
single capped the rally
Altoonas struggling bullpen couldnt protect the lead
Akron loaded the bases off Romulo Sanchez and Jason Roach in the
eighth, then Pat Osborn doubled off Roach to score all three runners
and tie the game
Randy Newsom (2-0) won in relief for Akron
