Bowie shortstop Luis Hernandez
ripped a go-ahead, two-run double in the top of the 11th inning
to key a four-run outburst and lift the Baysox to their second
straight win over the Curve, 6-3, Tuesday night at Blair County
Ballpark
The loss drops the Curve (7-8) back below the .500 mark after
entering Monday's series opener with their first winning record
of the season
Bowie (9-9) also took Monday's contest, holding off a late Curve
comeback in an 8-7 win
Hernandez recorded the go-ahead hit against Altoona reliever Jason
Roach (0-1), who was tagged with the loss after allowing four
runs - one earned - in the 11th inning
Brandon Sing led off the inning with a single, went to second
on catcher Brian Bock's sacrifice bunt and then to third when
Paco Figueroa reached on a throwing error by Curve third baseman
Neil Walker
Sing and Figueroa each scored on the Hernandez double
Bowie added two more runs in the 11th to grab a 6-2 advantage
The Curve got one back in the bottom of the frame when Randy Ruiz
tripled off the right-field wall and then scored on a wild pitch
thrown by eventual winning pitcher Fredy Deza (1-1)
However, Deza got Dave Parrish to bounce into a game-ending 6-4-3
double play to preserve the Bowie win
The Baysox and Curve went to extra innings tied at 2-2 after starters
Kip Bouknight of Altoona and Bowie left-hander Chris Waters each
turned in solid starting performances
Bouknight, who blanked the Baysox on just one hit over seven shutout
innings in a win last Wednesday in Bowie, worked seven innings
and yielded two runs on five hits, walking none and striking out
three
Meanwhile, Waters, who failed to pitch past the fifth inning in
any of his first three outings for the Baysox, allowed only one
run over six innings
One night after posting a season-high 15 hits, the Curve managed
just six hits against three Baysox pitchers
Brandon Chaves recorded the lone multi-hit contest for Altoona,
going 2-for-3
Ruiz's 11th-inning triple extended his team-high hitting streak
to seven games and a first-inning walk moved his season-opening
on-base streak to 15 games

The Curve and Baysox will play the third game of their four-game
series Wednesday night at 6.35pmat Blair County Ballpark

Luis Hernandez's go-ahead two-run
double keyed a four-run 11th inning as visiting Bowie outlasted
Altoona, 6-3, on Tuesday
Hernandez snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-bagger off Jason Roach
(0-1) with one out in the 11th
Nolan Reimold, who went 3-for-5, followed with an RBI single and

walks with four strikeouts over six frames
Alex Fernandez and Brett
Roneberg each drove in a run for the Curve (7-8)
Roach surrendered four runs - one earned - on three hits and a
walk in one inning
Altoona starter Kip Bouknight went seven frames, yielding two
runs on five hits with three strikeouts
The Baysox survived their longest
game of the season thus far in 2007, holding on to beat Altoona,
6-3 in 11 innings
The Curve would get
on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third when Brett
Roneberg drove a single to right off of Baysox starter Chris Waters
Vic Buttler would come around to score and give the Curve an early
1-0 lead
Waters would turn in a strong outing for the Baysox going six
innings, giving up only four hits and one run, while striking
out four
Kip Bouknight would be equally as good for the Curve on the mound,
but the Baysox would get on the scoreboard in the fifth
Nolan Reimold would start the inning off with a lead off double
and be brought around to score in the frame on a Jeff Fiorentino
single to left, knotting the game up at 1-1
The Baysox would then take a one run lead in the sixth
Paco Figueroa would get on base with a lead off single to center
He would be followed up by SS Luis Hernandez, who extended his
hit streak to 11 games with a single to center, moving Figueroa
to third
Val Majewski would ground into a double play in the next at bat,
but Figueroa scored giving the Baysox a 2-1 lead
Bouknight would get out of the seventh, getting Oscar Salazar
to ground out ending the inning
Bouknight finished the game, going seven innings giving up five
hits and two runs, while striking out three
The Curve would strike again in the seventh off of Baysox reliever
Felix Romero
Brandon Chaves led off the inning with a single and then stole
second base
Chaves would advance to third on an Andrew McCutchen groundout
and be brought around to score on an Alex Fernandez sacrifice
fly, making it 2-2
Romero would get out of the inning though getting Neil Walker
to line out to second
The score would be knotted at 2-2 through nine and then the Baysox
exploded for an insurmountable four runs in the top of the 11th
Brandon Sing would lead off the inning with a single left
Bryan Bass then came in to pinch run for Sing and would reach
second on a Brian Bock sacrifice bunt
Paco Figueroa then reached first in the next at bat on third baseman
Neil Walkers throwing error and Bass would reach third
Luis Hernandez came up big again in a critical situation and doubled
to left, scoring both Bass and Figueroa, giving the Baysox a 4-2
lead
Curve reliever Jason Roach would then intentionally walk Val Majewski,
to get to Oscar Salazar who flew out to right
Nolan Reimold would then connect again, this time a single to
right, scoring Hernandez and moving Majewski to third, giving
the Baysox a 5-2 lead
Majewski would then come around to score on a wild pitch with
Matt Cepicky batting, giving the Baysox a 6-2 lead
Roach would get out of the inning though, getting Cepicky to ground
out ending the inning
Roach took the loss for the Curve, giving up all four runs in
the inning on three hits
Freddy Deza would close out the 11th for the Baysox, but gave
up a lead off triple to Randy Ruiz
Ruiz would then score on a wild pitch, but the Deza would end
the game getting Chris Truby to pop out to third, then getting
Dave Parrish to ground into a double play, cementing the 6-3 win
for the Baysox
Deza picked up his first win of the season, improving his record
to (1-1)
The Curve and Baysox will play the third game of their four-game
series Wednesday night at 6.35pm at Blair County Ballpark
RHP Radhames Liz (1-1, 5.54), will get the start for the Baysox
Altoona will counter with RHP, Luis Munoz (1-0, 3.46)
Neil Walker made a superb diving
play to his left to snare a grounder and save a run from scoring
in the third inning Tuesday night
It was the best example yet this season of the athleticism the
Pirates talked so much about when they switched Walker from catcher
to third base
Hes doing outstanding Curve manager
Tim Leiper said
For a guy thats been over playing 25 games at
third base including spring training, hes done an outstanding
job, and hes only going to continue to get better
When Walker makes an error, the first inclination may be to blame
it on his inexperience at the new position
But sometimes, Leiper noted, players make errors that have nothing
to do with anything except one bad play
One of those plays just happened to cost the Curve in the 11th
inning Tuesday night, opening the floodgates for Bowie
The Baysox cashed in on a throwing error by Walker to score four
runs and pulled away for a 6-3 win before 2,766 fans at Blair
County Ballpark
The guy made an error; errors happen Leiper
said
Its not the reason we lost the game
No, the reason for that was several blown scoring chances much
earlier and the Curves inability to produce with runners
in scoring position
Without that, there wouldnt have been an 11th inning in
which Walker could make his error
Bowies Brandon Sing opened the 11th with a single to left
off Altoona reliever Jason Roach (0-1), then pinch-runner Bryan
Bass took second on Brian Bocks sacrifice bunt
Paco Figueroa followed with a soft bouncer to Walker, who charged
and fielded the ball cleanly as Bass ran behind him to third base
Walker stepped toward first but threw high, putting runners at
the corners with one out
I took a peek and saw the guy move from second to
third and caught it and threw it away Walker said
If you want to blame the game on me, thats fine
It wouldnt be fine to Leiper if people blamed the loss on
Walker
Every player in baseball makes errors
the manager said
Perennial Gold Glove winner Scott Rolen makes errors
Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson makes errors
He made an error, big deal
The guys playing his butt off
The Curve pulled the infield in, and with Figueroa taking off
on a hit and run, Luis Munoz smacked a double to left that scored
both runners for a 4-2 Baysox lead
Bowie added two insurance runs as Nolan Reimold, who went 3-for-5,
singled home Munoz and Val Majewski scored on a wild pitch by
Roach
The Curve got one run back in their final at-bat before Bowie
reliever Fredy Deza (1-1) closed it out
The Baysox have beaten the Curve in back-to-back one-run games,
and both times Altoona let key opportunities slip away
Its just a learning process Altoonas
Randy Ruiz said
These guys like to go out and do their best and give
their all
I dont doubt these guys
The Curve wasted a strong pitching performance from Kip Bouknight,
who held Bowie to two runs on five hits over seven innings
He one-hit the Baysox over seven shutout frames his last time
out
Hes going to keep you in every game
Leiper said of Bouknight and with our offense, hes
going to win a lot of games here
The Curve loaded the bases with one out in the first but couldnt
score against Bowie starter Chris Waters, who came in with an
8.76 ERA over three outings
Altoona also came up empty after putting runners at the corners
with two outs in the second, then
scored its first run in the third when Brett Roneberg singled
home Vic Buttler
Roneberg was ejected arguing a third strike call in the eighth
inning
Leiper stepped in to defend his player and was thrown out for
the second straight game
The Curve manager said the efforts there
from his team but added Its just a matter of
getting the one extra big hit and doing a little bit more and
the one thing thats going to put us over the top
Right now were just not getting it done
The Altoona Curve allowed three
unearned runs during the 11th inning and manager Tim Leiper was
ejected for a second straight game in a 6-3 loss to Bowie on Tuesday
at Blair County Ballpark
With one out in the 11th, third baseman Neil Walker made a throwing
error that allowed Bryan Bass to advance to third base and Paco
Figueroa to reach base
Figueroa and Bass then scored on a double by Luis Fernandez off
Jason Roach
The ending wrecked a solid pitching performance from Kip Bouknight,
Romulo Sanchez and Matt Peterson
The trio combined to allow six hits and two runs during the first
10 innings
The Curve (7-8) recorded just six hits against the Bowie pitching
trio of Chris Waters, Felix Romero and Fredy Deza
Leiper and first baseman
Brett Roneberg were ejected during the eighth inning by plate
umpire Grant Menke
Leiper was also ejected during the first inning of Monday's 8-7
loss
